Importance of Maintaining Workplace Discipline

Discipline is essential to become successful in life as

everything one aspires needs a little disciple or self-

control. Ensuring workplace discipline means to

control or direct employees so that they follow the

rules and policies of the organization and adhere to

the guidelines. Managers need to have control, but at

the same time it should not appear threatening.

Excessive check and balance will irritate and de-

motivate employees and will compel them to dump

the job.

Every organization has few employees who are not

ready to listen and have no effects of any disciplinary

hearings. Therefore to protect other employees,

company’s interest as well as office environment, and

one has to take strict measure. If a manager or

supervisor is not able to deal effectively with such

employees it might create serious problem for the

management. Indiscipline also reduces productivity of

the individual thereby impacting the bottom line of

the company. Therefore to achieve and maintain a

good working environment, managers must be aware

of nature of disciplinary process and the

consequences if appropriate and immediate action is

not taken.

Having an automated time and attendance keeping

system is the very first step that ensures discipline at

workplace. This system is highly beneficial as it

prevents employees from time stealing or buddy

punching.

Whether the violation of rules and regulations are

serious and require prompt action?

Has there been similar violation of rules and

regulations in the past by the same employee?

Such incident is happening frequently, can it be

ignored or it is a major violation?

Analyze how the company has handled similar

situate in the past.

It is important to look at the employee’s work

history. Employees past performance, physical and

emotional health should also be taken into

consideration.

Find out the possible factors that may have led to

the situation.

Good management ensures an optimistic approach in

the work force, therefore it becomes impossible for

employees to cheat or take advantage of a situation.

An effective manager ensures that the employees

understand and abide by the rules of the company;

they become built-in regulators of employee conduct

and help in minimizing the negative impact of

counter-productive behavior.
