At the close of the Passover meal, Jesus took the bread and wine and gave

them new meanings as He instituted the Lord's Supper / Communion / the

Eucharist.

We remember people for their lives, but Jesus wants us to remember Him also for

His death; the spiritual blessings we have as children of God come through His

death.

Studying the Passover Feast (Passover Seder) helps us to follow what Jesus

and His disciples were doing in Mark 14.

Passover is all about redemption.

Each year, in Jewish homes across the globe, Jewish people gather together to

celebrate the holiday during a traditional feast, which is called the Passover

Seder.

Seder means “order or arrangement”.

The Seder commemorates God's redemption of Israel and retells the story of

their liberation from Egypt.

It not only recounts Israel's escape from their harsh enslavement under Pharaoh,

but also presents a clear picture of Christ as our Redemption.

Jesus celebrated this feast with His disciples on the evening before His death

(Matthew 26, Mark 14, Luke 22, and 1 Corinthians 11).

During the celebration, Jesus used the elements - the bread and the wine of

Passover - to explain how His death & resurrection would offer redemption from

enslavement to sin.

Enslavement is a prerequisite for redemption.

If Pharaoh had not oppressed Israel in Egypt, the story of Passover would not

have been necessary.

Israel's enslavement prepared the way for the Exodus (Ex. 1:11-12; 6:6).

Just as the Jewish people were slaves under Pharaoh, so too has all of humanity

been enslaved to sin and alienated from God (Isa. 59:2; Rom. 6:15-23; Eph. 2:1-

3).

The story of Passover reminds the Jewish people of their bitter oppression.

Passover 2014 begins the evening of Monday, April 14 and ends the evening of

Tuesday, April 22.

The Seder illustrates the bitterness of the Hebrew oppression through both salt

water and bitter herbs, typically horseradish.

Both elements encourage the participants to recall the tears the nation

shed in Egypt.

This bitterness leads God's people to look for their Redeemer.

God did not design creation to be full of suffering - and just as in the time of the

Exodus, our affliction and the brokenness in creation cries out for a Redeemer.

REDEMPTION:

God poured out ten plagues upon Egypt, but redeemed Israel through the tenth

plague.

God instructed the people to kill a flawless lamb and spread its blood upon the

doorposts (two sides) and lintels (across the top) of their homes with hyssop

(Exodus 12:5, 21-22).

Hyssop is commonly used as an aromatic herb and medicinal plant.

The leaves have a lightly bitter taste due to its tannins, and an intense

minty aroma.

God redeemed Israel through the death of the lamb.

John introduced Jesus as the "Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the

world" (John 1:29).

Jesus is the Passover lamb, Who not only redeems Israel, but the entire world

through His sacrificial death (1 Corinthians 5:7).

MATZAH:

No Seder is complete without Matzah, the unleavened bread (Exodus 12:19-20).

Since the children of Israel left Egypt hastily, they did not have time for the bread

to rise, so it was made on that very first Passover without leaven, also known as

yeast.

The term "unleavened bread" is derived from the word matzoh (or matzah),

which means "bread or cake without leaven (yeast)."

Matzoh is in turn derived from a word which means "to drain out or suck in the

sense of greedily devouring for sweetness."

So it is quite possible that unleavened bread, while it may have been heavy and

flat, may also have been sweet to the taste.

In the Bible, leaven is almost always symbolic of sin.

since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed

Before the beginning of the Passover Seder, all leaven, which is a symbol of sin

(1 Cor. 5:6-8), must be removed from the Jewish home.

The house is cleaned from top to bottom and anything containing leaven is

removed.

Then, the evening before the Passover, the father of the house takes the

traditional cleaning implements: a candle, a feather, a wooden spoon, and a

bag, and searches the house for any specks of leaven which might have been

missed.

Like leaven which permeates the whole lump of dough, sin will spread in a

person, a church or a nation, eventually overwhelming and bringing its

participants into its bondage and eventually to death.

Romans 6:23 tell us that “the wages of sin is death,” which is God's judgment for

sin, and this is the reason that Christ died — to provide a way out of this

judgment for sin if man will repent of his sins, accept Christ as his Passover sacrifice

(1 Cor 5:7), and have his heart changed so that he can conform his life to what

God commands.

Whenever a little bit of sin in a person or a church is permitted, overlooked, and

compromised, it works much like leaven in bread.

It will eventually leaven the whole lump, affecting the whole church or the whole

nation as stated in Galatians 5:9 - 9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump.

This permitted sin will lead to other sins and will eventually draw a person or

church completely outside of the will and favor of our Father, and our Savior,

Jesus Christ.

The Jewish community refers to the matzah as the bread of affliction.

It reminds the nation that they had to leave Egypt in haste.

During the Seder, each family places three special pieces of matzah in

the center of the table.

The leader breaks the middle matzah & hides it until after the meal.

At the Last Supper, Jesus handed each of His disciples a broken piece of matzah

and told them that it symbolized His brokenness (Luke 22:19).

Yet Jesus did not remain broken; He rose from the dead.

The return of the broken matzah during the Seder is an illustration of Jesus'

resurrection.

The broken body (bread) of Christ was hidden in the earth for three days and

three nights.

Then came the Resurrection!

THE CUPS:

During the Seder, each participant drinks from four cups, reminding Israel of the

four expressions of redemption (Exodus 6:6-7).

Exodus 6:6-7 NKJV 6 Therefore say to the children of Israel: ‘I am the Lord;

a) I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians,

b) I will rescue you from their bondage, and

c) I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.

d) 7 I will take you as My people, and I will be your God.

Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God Who brings you out from under

the burdens of the Egyptians.

The first cup of wine

The Seder begins with a blessing recited over the first of four cups of wine:

"Blessed art Thou, Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who hast created the fruit

of the vine."

Jesus Himself blessed the first cup in Luke 22:17-18.

The second cup of wine

The second cup is to remind them of the Ten Plagues and the suffering of the

Egyptians when they hardened their heart to the Lord.

In order not to rejoice over the suffering of their enemies (Prov. 24:17), they spill a

drop of wine (which is a symbol of joy) as they recite each of the Ten Plagues,

thus remembering that their joy is diminished at the suffering of others.

The third cup of wine is:

"the Cup of Redemption."

Jesus handed this cup to His disciples and said it represents the New Covenant

(Lk. 22:20; Jer. 31:31-34), which promises both redemption and the forgiveness of

sin.

Washing the hands

Once the leaven is removed, the family sits around the table and ceremonially

washes their hands with a special laver and towel.

Jesus also took part in this tradition, but rather than wash His hands, He got up

from the table and washed the feet of His disciples, giving us a vivid lesson in

humility (Jn 13).

Lighting the candles

Once the house and the participants are ceremonially clean, the Passover

Seder can begin.

The woman of the house says a blessing and lights the Passover candles.

It is appropriate that the woman brings light into the home, because it was

through the woman that the light of the world, Messiah Jesus, came into

the world (Genesis 3:15 – her Seed).

Haggadah

Haggadah means

"the telling" - the telling of the story of Passover.

The story is told in response to four questions asked by the children:

The first question is – why is this night different from all other nights?

The father proceeds to tell the story of the Exodus from Egypt, reading from

a book called "The Haggadah" and using symbols and object lessons in

order to keep the attention of the little ones.

Afikomen

A very curious tradition now takes place.

At the table is a bag with three compartments and three pieces of motza.

The middle piece of motza is taken out, broken, and half is put back into the

bag.

The other half is wrapped in a linen napkin and hidden in the home prior to

Seder.

The Search for the Afikomen

After the meal is finished, the leader of the Seder lets the children loose to hunt

for the Afikomen, which was wrapped in a napkin and hidden before the meal

began.

The house is in a ruckus as everyone rushes around to be the first to find the

Afikomen and claim the prize as grandpa redeems it from the fortunate locator.

Once the leader has retrieved the Afikomen, he breaks it up into pieces

and distributes a small piece to everyone seated around the table.

The tradition perhaps dates back to the time of Jesus and if this is the case, then

Luke 22:19 takes on a greater meaning: "And He took bread, gave thanks and

broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is My body given for you; do this in

remembrance of Me.'"

For Jesus the Messiah would have taken the middle one of the three pieces of

motza, the piece that stood for the priest or mediator between God and the

people, broken it as His body would be broken, wrapped half in a linen napkin

as He would be wrapped in linen for burial, hidden it as He would be buried

(hidden in the earth), brought it back as He would be resurrected, and

distributed it to everyone seated with Him, as He would distribute His life to all

who believe.

As He did this, He was conscious that this middle piece of motza represented His

own, spotless body given for the redemption of His people.

As the motza is striped and pierced, His own body would be striped and

pierced, and it is by His stripes that we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).

This middle piece of motza, or the Afikomen, is our Communion Bread.

Elijah's Cup

A place setting remains empty for Elijah the prophet, the honored guest at every

Passover table.

The Jewish people expect Elijah to come at Passover and announce the coming

of the Messiah (Malachi 4:5).

Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

So a place is set, a cup is filled with wine, and hearts are expectant for Elijah to

come and announce the Good News.

At the end of the Seder meal, a child is sent to the door to open it and see if

Elijah is there.

Every year, the child returns, disappointed, and the wine is poured out without

being touched.

My people wait and hope for Messiah - they do not realize that Messiah has

already come.

But those of us who believe in Yeshua know that He is the One the prophets

spoke of.

He is the spotless, unblemished Passover Lamb, Whose body was broken for us,

Whose blood was shed, and Who now lives to distribute His life to all of us who

apply His blood to the doorpost of our hearts and have passed from death into

His eternal life.

The fourth cup of wine was drunk, and Ps 136, known as the great Hallel, was

sung.

This is the hymn Jesus sang with the disciples as they went out to the

Mount of Olives.

Thanksgiving to God for His Enduring Mercy
