Letter from the Minister

Dear Friends

Harvest time! Like many this year, the apple treein the manse garden has given a bumper crop; somany apples and not enough people to take and eatthem all. It has given us great joy to see the tree so laden with fruit, and it is difficult to remember the time in late spring when farmerswere complaining about the possible loss of their crops due to the verydry and hot early weather!

For Harvest this year we are supporting the Bromley URC HomelessnessProject, a project that provides advice, advocacy, practical help anddirect assistance to people who are living on the street or in temporaryaccommodation, to help them negotiate the housing, benefits, healthand criminal justice systems. They provide financial support for dailyneeds e.g. food, fares to hospital and court, gas and electricity keycards and mobile phone top-ups. They also hold a ‘Dinner with Friends’, afortnightly candlelit, two course meal on Mondays at 7.30pm, witharound 40 regular diners – homeless people, people in vulnerable housingsituations mixing on equal terms with members of local churches. Ifanyone wants to get involved then talk to me and I will give you contactinformation of the worker involved.

When it comes to sharing from our plenty, we really do not have to govery far to find those who need our help.

‘God helps those who help themselves’… Hmmm. You know that sentenceis NOT in our Bible. I’ve read it from cover to cover many times now,and that sentence just isn’t there. God expects US to help those inneed, and this Harvest we have a way to do just that.

Please give generously, the list of food required is printed in Catalyst onpage 10.

A woman approached the minister after the sermon, and thanked himfor his talk. "I found it so helpful," she said.

"Why, what do you mean?" asked the astonished woman."Well," said the minister, "that sermon lasted you three months."

HAYES PHILHARMONIC CHOIRHere is an early reminder of next month’s concert in Hayes Free Churchby Hayes Philharmonic Choir on Saturday 19 November. The mainwork will be Vivaldi’s Gloria. This piece has a freshness and animmediacy even for those who know it well, and if you have alwaysthought that classical music is not for you, it is one of those pieces thatcould be key to changing your mind. We shall also be singing themore tranquil Hymn to St Cecilia by Spohr (St Cecilia is the patron saintof music, always remembered on 22 November). Spohr composedsome beautiful music, which is being rediscovered now (by Classic FMamong others!) after a period of neglect, though he was very wellknown in Victorian times (as you may remember from a reference inGilbert and Sullivan!). Haydn’s Little Organ Mass will complete theprogramme.

As you read this there is still just about time to join us and sing in thisconcert if you would like to do so. And you would certainly be in timeto take part in our traditional charity carol concert (fixed for Saturday17 December in the Parish church). More information is available from07989 192928 or www.hayeschoir.com. You can also pick up one of ourleaflets from Hayes Library.

Scouts and Guides.Hayes Free Church. The success story

Looking back over many years it is of great interest to see how the uniformsections of the Church have successfully progressed under the namedLeaders:

Scouts/Cubs: Fred Wyatt, Richard Ash, Roy Buchan, Chris Fitzgerald, PaulHasling, Jamie Fraser, Steve Bowman, Simon Narracott, Pamela Haslingwho later became District Commissioner Cubs, and Brenda Petts

Guides/Brownies: Shirley Lancaster, Denise Fackrell, Janet Freak, TeresaCheyne also District Commissioner Hayes, Sarah Humphrey, Kerry Sullivan,Tania Venables, Alison Hetherington, Connie Russell, Linda Grahamand Zoë Curry.

There are others whose names I cannot remember but who are just asimportant. The success is due to all these wonderful people who arewilling not only to give of their time but also give up some of their holidaysto take the young people to camp. The organisation of camps and theweekly meetings takes up many hours of research and planning so thatthe young people benefit and enjoy the camps and activities. Theseattract the boys and girls to Scouting and Guiding. If we had poor leadersthese groups would not have had the waiting lists that have existed. Thequality of these men and women is beyond belief and we owe so muchto each and every one for the time and effort that they put into theactivities for Scouting and Guiding.

It has always been said that good preparation for any meeting is worthwhile for it to be successful and enjoyable.

Many of the above people have received awards from the Scouting andGuiding Associations for their outstanding work and dedication. We cannever say a big enough thank you to all of them, both past and present, for all they do.

It is always good in later life for the Leaders to look back and see how aScout or Guide had progressed in his or her future life. An example -recently a man, who had previously been for some years a helper withthe Cubs, was stopped in Brighton from parking his car on the front by apoliceman who looked into the car and said “ You can’t park there sir”.When asked why he said “ Because I say so”. It was then the driverrecognised the policeman - he had been a member of the Cubs manyyears before - and he had himself already recognised who the car driverwas after all those years! Needless to say he was allowed to park his car.

So again we all say thank you for the time, effort, dedication andresponsibility that our Leaders give to the young people.

The way things once wereFrom The Nottinghamshire Almanac for October 1841.

GARDEN.In this month little can be done for the kitchen garden beyond

preparing for future operations, by digging, manuring, or trenchingvacant ground, and collecting dung, leaves and turf, to makecompost.

Editor’s Note:This is the last of the 19th Century Garden tips. I have a couple of

other themes, which can be taken from the Almanac pages. I haveshort pieces of verse for each month, or monthly agricultural fairs andhistorical events. Please tell me whether you would like me tocontinue with these snippets about the way things once were.

Lessons from Geese

In Celtic Christianity, the symbol for The Holy Spirit is the wild goose. Byflying in a V-formation, as each bird flaps its wings the whole flock addsseventy-one per cent more flying range than if each bird flew alone.People who share a common direction and sense of community canget where they want to go more quickly and easily because they are alltravelling on the thrust generated by all.

Whenever a goose falls out of formation it quickly gets back so that itcan continue to take advantage of the lifting power of the birdimmediately in front. If we have as much sense as a goose we will stay in formation with thosewho are headed where we want to go.

When the lead goose gets tired, it moves back into the formation andanother goose flies at the point position. It pays to take turns at doing the hard tasks - sharing leadership andmaintaining interdependence.

The geese in formation 'honk' from behind to encourage those up frontto keep up their speed. We need to be sure that our 'honking from behind' is encouragementand not something else.

When a goose gets sick or wounded or shot down, two geese drop outof formation and follow the one to help and protect it. They stay until it isable to fly again or dies.If we have as much sense as geese we stand by each other in allcircumstances.

Editor’s FootnoteOctober falls between two days of remembrance connected withmassive events which affected the entire world.

It therefore felt fitting to publish the above verse and short piece oftext.

The Firefighters Creed

When I'm called to duty, Godwherever flames may rage

give me strength to save a lifewhatever be their age.

Help me to embrace a childbefore it is too late

or save an older person fromthe horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alertto hear the weakest shoutand quickly and efficiently

to put the fire out.

I want to fulfill my calling andto give the best in me

to guard my Neighbour andprotect his property.

And if according to your willI have to lose my life

bless with your protecting handmy children and my wife.

If Prometheus was worthy of the wrath of heaven for kindling the firstfire upon the earth, how ought all the Gods to honour the men whomake it their professional business to put it out?

Final Thought

Holy Spirit, source of all truth, giver of powerCome upon me nowAs gently as a doveOr like tongues of living fireAs quietly as a summer breezeOr as a mighty roaring wind.Come and dwell within me.Enable me now to do those things which before wereimpossibleUnworthy as I am, Holy Spirit of the living GodGive me those gifts which I can use to your honourand gloryThat I may show forth your fruitEven in my life.
