For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to

you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for

one’s life

2. Key Scriptures

Page 23: 5 The Blood of Jesus

John 6:53–57 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.

Page 24: 5 The Blood of Jesus

56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.

Page 25: 5 The Blood of Jesus

Leviticus 17:11 For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life 1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all[a] sin.

Page 26: 5 The Blood of Jesus

1 Peter 1:18–20 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

Page 27: 5 The Blood of Jesus

Hebrews 9:11–2811 But when Christ came as high priest of the good thingsthat are now already here,[a] he went through the greaterand more perfect tabernacle that is not made with humanhands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 Hedid not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves;but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his ownblood, thus obtaining[b] eternal redemption.

Page 28: 5 The Blood of Jesus

13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifersprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctifythem so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternalSpirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse ourconsciences from acts that lead to death,[c] so that we mayserve the living God!

Page 29: 5 The Blood of Jesus

15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a newcovenant, that those who are called may receive thepromised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as aransom to set them free from the sins committed underthe first covenant.16 In the case of a will,[d] it is necessary to prove the deathof the one who made it, 17 because a will is in force onlywhen somebody has died; it never takes effect while theone who made it is living. 18 This is why even the firstcovenant was not put into effect without blood.

Page 30: 5 The Blood of Jesus

19 When Moses had proclaimed every command of the lawto all the people, he took the blood of calves, together withwater, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkledthe scroll and all the people. 20 He said, “This is the bloodof the covenant, which God has commanded you tokeep.”[e] 21 In the same way, he sprinkled with the bloodboth the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies.22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything becleansed with blood, and without the shedding of bloodthere is no forgiveness.

Page 31: 5 The Blood of Jesus

23 It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenlythings to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenlythings themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 ForChrist did not enter a sanctuary made with human handsthat was only a copy of the true one; he entered heavenitself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. 25 Nor didhe enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the waythe high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year withblood that is not his own. ificed once to take away the sinsof many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin,but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

Page 32: 5 The Blood of Jesus

26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many timessince the creation of the world. But he has appeared oncefor all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin bythe sacrifice of himself. 27 Just as people are destined todie once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ wassacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he willappear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bringsalvation to those who are waiting for him.

Through the blood of Jesus wehave redemption. We are

redeemed out of the hand andpower of the devil

Page 36: 5 The Blood of Jesus

Ephesians 1:7In him we have redemption through hisblood, the forgiveness of sins, inaccordance with the riches of God’sgraceHebrews 9:12He did not enter by means of the bloodof goats and calves; but he entered theMost Holy Place once for all by his ownblood, thus obtaining[a] eternalredemption.

Page 37: 5 The Blood of Jesus

What does redemptionmean?

Page 38: 5 The Blood of Jesus

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________So if by the work of the cross we are“redeemed,” then before we were slaves.God has purchased our freedom, and weare no longer in bondage to sin or to theOld Testament law.Redemption often involves the paying ofa ransom, a price that makesredemption possible.

Page 39: 5 The Blood of Jesus

The word redeem means “to buyout” or to free someone from

bondage — it was used in referenceto the purchase of a slave’s freedom.

Page 40: 5 The Blood of Jesus

For example,- The Israelites were redeemed fromEgypt.- We were redeemed from the power ofsin and the curse of the Law (Gal. 3:13)through Jesus (Rom. 3:24; Col. 1:14).- We were bought with a price (1 Cor.6:20; 7:23).- Christ’s death on the cross was thepayment of a ransom price (Mark10:45) by which sinners are set free.

Page 41: 5 The Blood of Jesus

(ii) Through the blood of Jesusall our sins are forgiven, if we

confess them. As we walk in thelight with Jesus, His blood is

continually cleansing us fromall sins

Page 42: 5 The Blood of Jesus

1 John 1:7–9But if we walk in the light, as he is inthe light, we have fellowship with oneanother, and the blood of Jesus, hisSon, purifies us from all[a] sin.8 If we claim to be without sin, wedeceive ourselves and the truth is not inus. 9 If we confess our sins, he isfaithful and just and will forgive us oursins and purify us from allunrighteousness.

Page 43: 5 The Blood of Jesus

(iii) Through the blood ofJesus we are justified, maderighteous, just as if we had

never sinned. We areclothed with His

righteousness

Page 44: 5 The Blood of Jesus

Romans 5:99 Since we have now been justified byhis blood, how much more shall we besaved from God’s wrath through him!The person who trusts in Christbecomes, in Christ, all that Godrequires that person to be, all that theycould never be in themselves

Page 45: 5 The Blood of Jesus

2 Corinthians 5:21God made him who had no sin to besin[a] for us, so that in him we mightbecome the righteousness of God.

Page 46: 5 The Blood of Jesus

So what does it mean to be justified? Justification is an

instantaneous legal act of God in which he thinks of our sins as forgiven and Christ’s

righteousness as belonging to us, and so declares us to be

righteous in His sight. Wayne Grudem, Systematic

Theology, Ch 36

Page 47: 5 The Blood of Jesus

(iv) Through the blood ofJesus we have access into

the presence of God at anytime to obtain mercy andhelp, especially in time of

need

Page 48: 5 The Blood of Jesus

Hebrews 10:19–20Therefore, brothers and sisters, sincewe have confidence to enter the MostHoly Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 bya new and living way opened for usthrough the curtain, that is, his body,

Page 49: 5 The Blood of Jesus

David Wilkinson:There is another benefit of the cross…God’sdelight comes in his enjoyment of ourcompany. Before the cross, there was no access to Godfor the general public; only the high priestcould enter the Holy of holies. Now Jesus’cross made a path for us into the Father’spresence. By his grace alone, God tore downthe wall that blocked us from his presence. Now he could come out to man, to embracehis prodigals and sinners of all sorts.

Page 50: 5 The Blood of Jesus

…you cannot come into joy and peace —indeed, you cannot know how to servethe Lord — until you see his delight inyour deliverance…until you see the joyof his heart over his communion withyou…until you see that every wall hasbeen removed at the cross…until youknow that everything of your past hasbeen judged and wiped away. God says,“I want you to move on, into thefullness that awaits you in mypresence!”

Page 51: 5 The Blood of Jesus

“And now we also have liberty to enter through the Blood. Sin took away our liberty of approach to God, the Blood perfectly restores to us this liberty. He

who will take time to meditate upon the power of that Blood, appropriating it believingly for himself, will obtain a

wonderful view of the liberty and directness with which we can now have

intercourse with God.” Andrew Murray, The Power of the Blood of Jesus

Page 52: 5 The Blood of Jesus

(v) Through the blood ofJesus we are sanctified –

made holy and set apart forGod

Page 53: 5 The Blood of Jesus

Hebrews 13:12And so Jesus also suffered outside thecity gate to make the people holythrough his own blood.Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology,____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Sanctification means to be separated and set apart for holy

use and is actually living and expressing the life which Jesus displayed and lived when He

was on earth.

Page 55: 5 The Blood of Jesus

(vi) Through the blood of Jesusour conscience is cleansed fromall guilt and we are free in body,

mind, soul and spirit to servethe Lord Jesus Christ

Page 56: 5 The Blood of Jesus

Hebrews 9:14How much more, then, will the blood ofChrist, who through the eternal Spiritoffered himself unblemished to God,cleanse our consciences from acts thatlead to death,[a] so that we may servethe living God!2 Timothy 1:7For the Spirit God gave us does not makeus timid, but gives us power, love andself-discipline.

Page 57: 5 The Blood of Jesus

Guilt has two distinct parts: legal andemotional.- Legal guilt is the outcome of a legalor a moral violation. If a break the lawor a moral code, I am “guilty” ofbreaking it.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

- Emotional guilt is the outcome ofthe conscience that God has given us.

It is the spiritual organ that causesus to feel pain when we do wrong.

(vii) Therefore we havevictory over the devil andwe overcome him by the

blood of the Lamb and theword of our testimony andwe love not our own lives

even unto death

Revelation 12:11They triumphed over him by the bloodof the Lamb and by the word of theirtestimony;they did not love their lives so much asto shrink from death.

Page 61: 5 The Blood of Jesus

4.  Why Blood?

Page 62: 5 The Blood of Jesus

In Old Testament times, the high priest would enter the Most Holy Place each year to sprinkle the blood of an animal sacrifice before the symbol of God’s presence, the Ark of the Covenant. This was a temporary way of making atonement for a nation before God, for all the sin of the nation during a year.

Page 63: 5 The Blood of Jesus

Leviticus 17:11 helps explain thesignificance of the blood. It says, ‘‘Forthe life of a creature is in the blood, andI have given it to you to makeatonement for yourselves on the altar;it is the blood that makes atonementfor one’s life.’’Two points need to be noted here.______________________________________________________‘‘I have given it to you.’’

First, the blood of sacrifice is a divineprovision (God has provided it)

Page 65: 5 The Blood of Jesus

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________Sin is the problem and the blood is theredemption price which ransoms orbuys us back from the result of sinwhich is death. The blood pays the pricewhich cancels out the offence of sin; soa life is laid down in payment for sin.

The blood pays the pricewhich cancels out the offence of sin; soa life is laid down in payment for sin.

Second, the use of blood in sacrifice is a price-paying act: to make

atonement or reconcile, which simply means to pay the penalty.

Page 67: 5 The Blood of Jesus

Christ Jesus came as a sinless offering, shed His own blood and gave His ownlife, so that all who believe in Him andconfess Him as Lord would not need todie for their own sin. He made a way forour sins to be wiped out. He paid theprice for our sins and obtained eternalredemption by His death on the cross(Colossians 1:13–14).

In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of

blood there is no forgiveness.

Page 71: 5 The Blood of Jesus

God set up the judgement for sin as death, and then He paid the ransom price by sending His own Son into the world to shed His blood and die for us. If we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour then we can take hold of this work and be rescued out of the kingdom of darkness and become part of the Kingdom of God.

Daily Lives

Page 73: 5 The Blood of Jesus

(i) ___________________________ In the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus prayed, ‘‘Not my will, but yours be done.’’ Luke 22:42 The strain of death was so great upon Him that blood vessels in His face broke, and, mixed with perspiration fell to the ground in great drops. That blood speaks of redemption from rebellion – exercising our wills against the will of God – doing ‘our thing’ and all its awful consequences.

Victory over rebellion

Page 75: 5 The Blood of Jesus

From Adam the human race has insisted on doing its own will and ignoring the will of God. At times people try to keep His will in their own power, according to the law, but they have no power. When Jesus prayed the High Priestly prayer, ‘‘Not my will but yours be done’’, He prayed in our place, as a priest does, representing the people before God. In praying that prayer He shed His blood to redeem our wills so that we too can say, ‘‘Not my will but yours be done.’’

Page 76: 5 The Blood of Jesus

(ii) _________________________ ___________________________ The thorn was a symbol of God’s curse on sin (Genesis 3:18). It was correct for Jesus, when suffering on the cross to wear on His head the symbol of that curse, the crown of thorns (Matthew 27:29). This showed that He was taking the curse upon Himself. The blood shed speaks of redemption from the curse of sin.
