Hebrews 6:1-3 (NIV)

Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the

foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.

And God permitting, we will do so.

What is Faith and where does it come from?

Page 6: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Q1: What is Faith and where does it come from?

A1: Faith means belief. To have faith means to know something that can't be seen is true. Faith is like being pregnant: either you have it or you don’t.

R1: Hebrews 11:1 and Matthew 17:20

Page 7: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things we hope for, the certainty of things we cannot see. Matthew 17:20 He said to them, "Because of your lack of faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

A2: Miracles, also called signs and wonders and mighty works, are impossible things that happen. They come from faith.

R2: John 14:11,12

Page 10: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

John 14:11 Believe me, I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Otherwise, believe me because of the works themselves. "Truly, truly I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I am doing. He will do even greater works than these because I am going to the Father.

A3: Miracles help people to believe in God and His Son, Jesus Christ.

R3: John 4:47-53

Page 13: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

John 4:47-53 When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. So Jesus said to him, "Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe." The official said to him, "Sir, come down before my child dies." Jesus said to him, "Go; your son will live." The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering. So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him." The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." And he himself believed, and all his household.

Q4: Who did miracles in the Old Testament?

A4: Many people. Noah built an enormous ark. Abraham fathered a nation. Joseph explained dreams. Moses brought the plagues. Elijah called down fire. Elisha raised the dead. Many miracles.

R4: 2 Kings 4:31-35

Page 16: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

2 Kings 4:31-35 Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the face of the child, but there was no sound or sign of life. Therefore he returned to meet him and told him, "The child has not awakened." When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed. So he went in and shut the door behind the two of them and prayed to the LORD. Then he went up and lay on the child, putting his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands. And as he stretched himself upon him, the flesh of the child became warm. Then he got up again and walked once back and forth in the house, and went up and stretched himself upon him. The child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

Q5: Who was the greatest miracle worker of all time?

A5: Jesus. He turned water to wine, healed the sick, lame, blind and deaf, cast out demons, fed thousands with a few scraps of food, calmed the storm, walked on water, brought the dead back to life, and rose from the dead.

R5: Mark 4:37-41 and Acts 2:22 and John 21:25

Page 19: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Mark 4:37-41 A violent windstorm came up, and the waves began breaking into the boat, so that the boat was rapidly becoming swamped. But Jesus was in the back of the boat, asleep on a cushion. So they woke him up and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care that we're going to die?" Then he got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Hush! Be still!" Then the wind stopped blowing, and there was a great calm. He said to them, "Why are you such cowards? Don't you have any faith yet?" They were overcome with fear and kept saying to one another, "Who is this man? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”

Acts 2:22 "Fellow Israelites, listen to these words! Jesus from Nazareth was a man accredited to you by God through miracles, wonders, and signs that God performed through him among you, as you yourselves know.

John 21:25 Of course, Jesus also did many other things, and I suppose that if every one of them were written down the world couldn't contain the books that would be written.

Page 22: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Q6: Could anything stop Jesus from doing

miracles?

A6: Yes, unbelief. When people didn't believe, they didn't see miracles.

R6: Matthew 13:54-58 and Mark 6:5

Page 23: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Matthew 13:54-58 He went to his hometown and began teaching the people in their synagogue in such a way that they were amazed and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miracles? This is the builder's son, isn't it? His mother is named Mary, isn't she? His brothers are James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas, aren't they? And his sisters are all with us, aren't they? So where did this man get all these things?" And they were offended by him. But Jesus told them, "A prophet is without honor only in his hometown and in his own home." He did not perform many miracles there because of their unbelief.

Page 24: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Mark 6:5,6 He couldn't perform a miracle there except to lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was utterly amazed at their unbelief. Then he went around to the villages and continued teaching.

Q7: Who did miracles, signs and wonders

after Jesus went up to heaven?

A7: Peter, John, and Paul -the 12 Apostles performed miracles after Jesus ascended to Heaven.

R7: Acts 3:1-8 and 2 Corinthians 12:12

Page 27: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Acts 3:1-8 Peter and John were going up to the temple for the hour of prayer at three in the afternoon. Now a man who had been crippled from birth was being carried in. Every day people would lay him at what was called the Beautiful Gate so that he could beg from those who were going into the temple. When he saw that Peter and John were about to go into the temple, he asked them to give him something. Peter, along with John, looked him straight in the eye and said, "Look at us!" So the man watched them closely, expecting to get something from them. However, Peter said, "I don't have any silver or gold, but I'll give you what I do have. In the name of Jesus Christ from Nazareth, walk!" Then Peter took hold of his right hand and began to help him up. Immediately his feet and ankles became strong, and he sprung to his feet, stood up, and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple, walking, jumping, and praising God.

Q8:

Besides Jesus, did only the 12 Apostles do signs and wonders?

Page 30: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Q8: Besides Jesus, did only the 12 Apostles do signs and wonders?

A8: The Apostles weren't the only ones who did miracles, signs and wonders - the 72 that Jesus sent, Stephen, and other disciples also did miracles.

R8: Luke 10:1-21 and Acts 6:8 and Acts 14:3

Page 31: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Luke 10:1-21 After this, the Lord appointed seventy other disciples and sent them ahead of him in pairs to every town and place that he intended to go. "Whenever you go into a town and the people welcome you, eat whatever they serve you, heal the sick that are there, and tell them, 'The kingdom of God is near you!' The seventy came back and joyously reported, "Lord, even the demons are submitting to us in your name!" He said to them, "I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. Look! I have given you the authority to trample snakes and scorpions and to destroy all the enemy's power, and nothing will ever hurt you. However, stop rejoicing because the spirits are submitting to you. Rather, rejoice because your names are written in heaven." In that hour Jesus was extremely joyful in the Holy Spirit and said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from wise and intelligent people and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this is what was pleasing to you.

Act 6:8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people.

Act 14:3 So they (Paul, Barnabas, and other disciples) remained for a long time, speaking boldly for the Lord, who bore witness to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands. .

Q9: Who can do greater works than Jesus?

A9: Jesus said that those who believe in Him will be doing even greater miracles than He did.

R9: John 14:11-14 and Mark 16:17-18

Page 35: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

John 14:11-14 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves. "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

Page 36: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Mark 16:17-18 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Q10:

Can anyone do miracles? Or do you need some special ability?

Page 38: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Q10: Can anyone do miracles? Or do you

need some special ability?

A10: The ability to do miracles first requires faith, but then can be seen as a gift from the Holy Spirit.

R10: I Corinthians 12:7-10,28-30

Page 39: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

I Corinthians 12:7-10,28-30 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. God has appointed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then those who perform miracles, those who have gifts of healing, those who help others, administrators, and various kinds of tongues. Not all are apostles, are they? Not all are prophets, are they? Not all are teachers, are they? Not all perform miracles, do they? Not all have the gift of healing, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they? Not all interpret, do they?

Q11:

Where does the power to do miracles, signs and wonders come from?

Page 41: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Q11: Where does the power come from?

A11: God the Father in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, does mighty works to reveal His glory.

R11: Acts 4:29-31 and Colossians 3:17 and

Romans 4:20-25

Page 42: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Acts 4:29-31 Lord, pay attention to their threats now, and allow your servants to speak your word with all boldness as you stretch out your hand to heal and to perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus." When they had prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken, and all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Page 43: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Romans 4:20-25 nor did he (Abraham) doubt God's promise out of a lack of faith. Instead, he became strong in faith and gave glory to God, being absolutely convinced that God would do what he had promised. This is why "it was credited to him as righteousness." Now the words "it was credited to him" were written not only for him but also for us. Our faith will be regarded in the same way, if we believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. He was handed over to death because of our sins and was raised to life because of our justification.

Q12:

As wonderful and amazing as miracles are, what is better?

Page 45: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

Q12: As wonderful and amazing as miracles are, what is better?

A12: Love is best. Miracles are only signs to inspire others to have faith in God. Most people just use reason and don't even need to see signs. But, everyone needs to love and to be loved.

R12: I Corinthian 13:3,13

Page 46: Foundation Stone #2: Power of Faith

I Corinthians 13:3,13

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
