GOD’S DELEGATED AUTHORITY

Scripture Reading

•MARK 13:34• For the Son of man is as a man

taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.

THE HIGHER POWERS

• ROMANS 13:1-7• 1 ¶ Let every soul be subject unto the higher

powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

• 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

• 7 ¶ Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

2 KINDS OF AUTHORITY• 1. Direct authority. This means that

God tells us directly through His Word or through His Spirit what He wants us to do.

• 2. Delegated authority. This means that God designates certain people to represent Him and to exercise His authority.

DIRECT AUTHORITY

• Command and signs following the believer

• MATTHEW 28:18-20• MARK 16:15• 15 And He said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach

the gospel to every creature.• 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that

believeth not shall be damned.• 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name

shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; • 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly

thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

DIRECT AUTHORITY• MATTHEW 16:19• And I will give unto thee the keys

of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

KNOW YOUR CALLING• Now, everybody can't be a preacher, but you got

a voice… If you're a preacher, you're called to the pulpit to preach. If you're not, you're still a preacher, but live the people a sermon. Let your sermon be lived, and it's the voice of God that'll bring reproach to them who reject it.

• See, live your sermons. Don't try to preach them if you're NOT called to be a preacher; get all mixed up, anyhow, and messed up, and you'll get people tangled up, and you won't know... Well, you'll--you'll ruin them and yourself too. Just live your sermon.

DELEGATED AUTHORITY

1 -THE FAMILY• God's arrangement for

the family is that the father be the head of the house under God.• The wife is to be subject to her

husband, and the children subject to their parents.

HUSBAND<>WIFE• EPHESIANS 5:22 -"Wives,

submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.“

• EPHESIANS 5:24-25- “Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it;”

• GENESIS 3:16• ¶ Unto the woman he said, I will

greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

• “A woman ain't got no business in politics. She ain't got no business in the... over any authority in the church.

• Her place is a man's queen at home. Outside of that, she has nothing. And we know that to be the Truth. You'll never find... I know that sounds old-fashioned, but I'm responsible.”

• 1 Timothy 2:11-15 clearly states:"Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.”

• 1 Corinthians 14:34-37:"Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but [they are commanded] to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church."

• I TIMOTHY 5:8“But if any provide not for his

own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”

GOD’S COVENANT WITH THE MAN• GENESIS 3:17-19• 17 ¶ And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast

hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

• 19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.”• EXODUS 20:12 –

“Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”

• EPHESIANS 6:4 – “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”

2 -THE CHURCH

• God's plan is that Christ be the Head of every church. • Under Christ are God-appointed leaders

such as elders - prophet, pastors, evangelists, missionaries, teachers, deacons, and the trustees. We are to be subject to God's delegated authorities in the church.

THE FIVE-FOLD MINISTRY• EPHESIANS 4:11-14• 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some,

prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

• 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

• 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

• 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.

PASTOR<>CONGREGATION

• The Bible says, in HEBREWS 13:7 – “Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.”

• HEBREWS 13:17 – “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.”

COMPLETE AUTHORITY IN THE CHURCH

• “But the full and complete authority of the church is the pastor. Read that in the Bible; see if that's not Bible order. That's exactly right. There's no one above the elder.”

COMPLETE AUTHORITY IN THE CHURCH

• “I have nothing to do with what Brother Neville does here. That's up to you and Brother Neville. If Brother Neville wanted to preach Jehovah Witness doctrine, that's up to him and you. See? If he wanted to preach anything he wanted to, that's between you and him. That's all. If the congregation votes for him in there to preach that, that's all right. LOCAL SOVEREIGNTY• But I believe in the supreme authority of the

local assembly. Yes. Let each church be its own, choose its pastors, its deacons, its, whatever it is. And then, that way, the man in there has no bishop over him. The Holy Spirit wants to speak something to that church, they don't have to ask anybody about whether they could do this or do that. It's the individual in contact with the Holy Spirit.

LOCAL SOVEREIGNTY

• Show me by the Bible what's greater, in the Bible, than a local elder to a local church? That's right, yes, sir, the sovereignty of the local church, each church in itself. Now, brotherhood, that's wonderful. All churches ought to be in a brotherhood like that, together. But the sovereignty of local church! (HEBREWS.CHAPTER.FIVE.AND.SIX.1_ JEFF.IN HEB SUNDAY_ 57-0908M)

YOU CAN’T LIVE HIGHER

• “You'll never live no higher than your pastor. You just remember that. See? And so... 'Cause he's the shepherd that feeds you. If he's the shepherd, he's got to know where the manna is, to feed the--the sheep… the revelation, the hidden manna.”

Admonition to the Elders• I PETER 5:1-3• 1 ¶ The elders which are among you I exhort,

who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:

• 2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

• 3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

RESPECT THE OFFICE OF THE MAN

• RESPECTS_ JEFF.IN V-13 N-4 SUNDAY_ 61-1015E• 165 If you can't respect the man, respect

the office he holds in God. That's exactly right (See?); respect him. If a minister comes up, your pastor, always respect him. I've heard congregations talk about their pastor, how just talk about him, run him down, ridicule him. How is that pastor ever going to do anything for you? He can't do it..

RESPECT THE OFFICE OF THE MAN

• I don't say this church, but I mean churches I have seen, that if you... You've got to love your pastor. You've got to know that he's a human being, but yet God has made him His pastor. The Holy Ghost has made him overseer; then you've got to respect him in that manner. And no matter what the pastor's done, if you respect him in your heart as God's servant, God will respect you for doing it.

3 -THE GOVERNMENT• Due to the sinful and rebellious

nature of men, God established laws and set up human government. • God gave men the authority to

enforce His laws. He did this for the protection and good of the society.

3 -THE GOVERNMENT• Civil authorities are God's

provision for the restraint of evil in order that we might live "a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty." (1 Timothy 2:2)

3 -THE GOVERNMENT• The nation’s president, the

school teachers, police officers, local officials, judges, state officials are all God's delegated authorities. Since they represent God's authority, we must obey them.

3 -THE GOVERNMENT• The Bible says, "Let every

soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God." Romans 13:1

3 -THE GOVERNMENT• Our Lord was never a party

to any rebellion. He taught people to obey governmental authorities. When the Pharisees asked Jesus whether they should pay taxes to Caesar,

• The Lord replied, "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." Matthew 22:21

1 Peter 2:13 - "Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man FOR THE LORD'S SAKE...."

Question: "What if someone in authority commands me to do something which is contrary to what God has commanded?"

•"We ought to obey God rather than men." (Acts 5:29)

4 -BUSINESS•Our employer or

"boss" represents God's delegated authority at work.

4 -BUSINESS• We honor God in our

work when we do our best for Jesus' sake.

• God is not pleased when we do our work in a careless and half-hearted way. He wants us to put our heart into our work.

4 -BUSINESS• MASTERS/EMPLOYERS

• EPHESIANS 6:9- And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.

4 -BUSINESS• SERVANTS/EMPLOYEES• COLOSSIANS 3:22-24• 22 Servants, obey in all things your

masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:

• 23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

• 24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

CONCLUSION• I CORINTHIANS 14:40

•Let all things be done decently and in order.

Final Admonition to All• ROMANS 12:16-19• 16 Be of the same mind one toward

another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. • 17 Recompense to no man evil for

evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
