TEN PARTSPart 6

Page 2: Great Commission 6

PART SIX:THE ACT

(OF OBEDIENCE):BAPTISM

Page 3: Great Commission 6

The five accounts of the Great

Commission are in:Matthew 28;

Mark 16;Luke 24;John 20;Acts 1.

Page 4: Great Commission 6

Here is a summary of the first five points:

1 The authority behind it: Jesus Christ.

2 The obligation:Go.

Page 5: Great Commission 6

3 The place:All the world and everyone in it.

4 The method:Teach.

5 The message:Hear, believe, repent, confess

Christ, and be baptized..

Page 6: Great Commission 6

Let us askand

answer six questions.

Page 7: Great Commission 6

What is the baptism of the Great

Commission?

On the negative side, the baptism of the Great Commission is not:

Holy Spirit baptism

Page 8: Great Commission 6

Examples of Holy Spirit baptism are limited to the apostles & 1st gentile

converts

John 14-16; Acts 1,2,10:44-48 Baptism in fire

Matthew 3:10-12 indicates this is punishment

Page 9: Great Commission 6

An improper “mode” (such as sprinkling or pouring). On the positive side, the

baptism of the Great Commission is:

Immersion in water.

John’s baptism is no longer in effect.

Acts 19:1-6

Page 10: Great Commission 6

“Immersion” baptizo to make whelmed

(that is, fully wet); used only (in the New Testament) of ceremonial

ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of

Christian baptism: (Strongs)

Page 11: Great Commission 6

Acts 8:36-39NET Now as they were going along the road, they came to some water, and the eunuch

said, "Look, there is water! What is to stop me from being

baptized?" 37 (TEXT OMITTED) 38 So he

Page 12: Great Commission 6

ordered the chariot to stop, and both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water, the

Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away…

Page 13: Great Commission 6

Ephesians 5:26 NET to sanctify her by cleansing her with the washing of

the water by the word, All commentators of repute

in all bodies refer this to baptism. All in the church

pass through

Page 14: Great Commission 6

the waters of baptism. But the washing of the water would be of no

avail without the word. The power is in the word of

the Lord which offers the gospel and commands baptism. (PNT)

Page 15: Great Commission 6

The one baptismEphesians 4:5 NET one Lord, one faith, one baptism, A burial

Colossians 2:12 NET Having been buried with him in

baptism, you also have

Page 16: Great Commission 6

been raised with him through your faith in the power of God who raised

him from the dead.Who should be baptized?

Baptism is for those

Page 17: Great Commission 6

who have been taught.Matthew 28:19 MKJV

Therefore go and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the

Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Page 18: Great Commission 6

Baptism is for those who believe Acts

18:8 NET Crispus, the president of the synagogue, believed in the Lord together with his entire household, and many of the

Corinthians who heard about

Page 19: Great Commission 6

it believed and were baptized. Mark 16:16 NET The one who believes and is

baptized will be saved, but the one who does not

believe will be condemned.

Page 20: Great Commission 6

Baptism is for those who are guilty of sin Acts 2:38 NET Peter said to them, "Repent, and

each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for

the forgiveness of your

Page 21: Great Commission 6

sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy

Spirit.

Baptism is for those who are penitent (have repented).

Page 22: Great Commission 6

Luke 24:47 NET and repentance for the forgiveness of sins

would be proclaimed in his name to all nations,

beginning from Jerusalem.

Page 23: Great Commission 6

Acts 3:19 NET Therefore repent and turn back so that your sins may be

wiped out, Baptism is for those who confess Christ. Acts 8:37 MKJV

Philip said, If you believe with all your heart, it is lawful. And he

answered

Page 24: Great Commission 6

and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. (This verse

in not in the majority of the manuscripts.) Baptism is for men and women. Acts 8:12

NET But when they believed Philip as he

Page 25: Great Commission 6

was proclaiming the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they began to be baptized, both men

and women.Baptism is not for infants – for they do not meet

(nor can they meet) any of the above criteria.

Page 26: Great Commission 6

How should I be baptized? In water

Acts 8:36 NET ...they came to some water, …What is to

stop me from being baptized?" 37 … 38 …Philip

and the eunuch went

Page 27: Great Commission 6

down into the water, Philip baptized him. 39 …they came

up out of the water… Ephesians 5:26 NET …sanctify

her…cleansing…with the washing of the water …

Page 28: Great Commission 6

In much waterJohn 3:23 NET John was also

baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful

there, and people were coming to him and being baptized.

Page 29: Great Commission 6

I should go into the water.Matthew 3:13 NET Then Jesus came

from Galilee to John to be baptized by him in the Jordan River. 14..15..16 After Jesus was

baptized, just as he was

Page 30: Great Commission 6

coming up out of the water..17 ..voice from heaven said, "This is my one

dear Son; in him I take great delight." Acts 8:38 NET…(they) went

down into the water.. came up out of the water,

Page 31: Great Commission 6

I should be buried in the water. Romans 6:3 NET Or do you not know that as many as were

baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

4 Therefore we have been

Page 32: Great Commission 6

buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised

from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too

may live a new life.

Page 33: Great Commission 6

Colossians 2:12 NET Having been buried with him in baptism, you also have been raised

with him through your faith in the power of God who raised him from the dead.

Page 34: Great Commission 6

I will be washed pure from sin. Titus 3:5 NET he saved us not by

works of righteousness that we have done but on the basis of

his mercy, through the washing of

Page 35: Great Commission 6

the new birth and the renewing of the Holy Spirit,

Hebrews 10:22 NET let us draw near with a sincere heart in

the assurance that faith brings, because we have

Page 36: Great Commission 6

had our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil

conscience and our bodies washed in pure water. Acts

22:16 NET And now what are you waiting for? Get up,

Page 37: Great Commission 6

be baptized, and have your sins washed away, calling on his

name.' I should be resurrected, come up

out of the water Romans 6:4 NET

Therefore we have been buried

Page 38: Great Commission 6

with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the

dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a

new life. 5 For if we have

Page 39: Great Commission 6

become united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be united in the likeness of

his resurrection.

Page 40: Great Commission 6

Matthew 3:16 NET After Jesus was baptized …he was coming

up out of the water... Acts 8:39

NET Now when they came up out of the water,…

Page 41: Great Commission 6

Why should I be baptized?

For the remission of sins.

We are lost apart from obedience to God.

Romans 3:23 NET for all have sinned and fall short of the

glory of God.

Page 42: Great Commission 6

Romans 5:8 NET But God demonstrates his own love

for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 6:23 NET For the payoff of sin is

Page 43: Great Commission 6

death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Jesus died for

my sins. Matthew 26:28 NET for this is my blood, the blood

of the covenant,

Page 44: Great Commission 6

that is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.Luke 19:10 NET For the Son of Man came to seek and to

save the lost."

Page 45: Great Commission 6

Matthew 11:28 NET Come to me, all you who are weary and

burdened, and I will give yourest. 29 Take my yoke on you and learn from me, because I

am gentle

Page 46: Great Commission 6

and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your

souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and my load

is not hard to carry."

Page 47: Great Commission 6

I need His blood.Hebrews 7:27 NET He has no need to

do every day what those priests do, to offer sacrifices first for their own sins and

then for the sins of the

Page 48: Great Commission 6

people, since he did this in offering himself once for all. Hebrews 9:22 NET Indeed

according to the law almost everything was purified

with blood, and without the

Page 49: Great Commission 6

shedding of blood there is no forgiveness..26 ..But now he has appeared once for all at

the consummation of the ages to put away sin by his

sacrifice. 27 And just as

Page 50: Great Commission 6

people are appointed to die once, and then to face judgment, 28 so

also, after Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many, to those

who eagerly await him he will appear

Page 51: Great Commission 6

a second time, not to bear sin but to bring salvation. John 1:29 NET On the next day

John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,

"Look, the Lamb of God

Page 52: Great Commission 6

who takes away the sin of the world!Baptism is where the

benefits of His blood are received.

Page 53: Great Commission 6

Matthew 26:28 NET for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, that is

poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Page 54: Great Commission 6

Acts 2:38 NET Peter said to them, "Repent, and each one of you be

baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift

of the Holy Spirit.

Page 55: Great Commission 6

Acts 22:16 NET And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized, and have your sins washed away,

calling on his name.'

Page 56: Great Commission 6

1 Peter 3:21 NET And this prefigured baptism, which now saves you -

not the washing off of physical dirt but the pledge of a goodconscience

to God -through the resurrection of Jesus

Christ,

Page 57: Great Commission 6

Romans 6:3 NET Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus

were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we have

been buried with him

Page 58: Great Commission 6

through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the

Father, so we too may live a new life.

Page 59: Great Commission 6

What are the effects of baptism?

Obedience to God.Acts 10:48 NET So he gave

orders to have them baptized in the name of

Jesus Christ….

Page 60: Great Commission 6

Revelation 22:14 NET Blessed are those who wash their robes so they can have access to

the tree of life and can enter into the city by the

gates.

Page 61: Great Commission 6

Hebrews 5:8 NET Although he was a son, he learned obedience through

the things he suffered. 9 And by being perfected in this way, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,

Page 62: Great Commission 6

It fulfills righteousness Matthew 3:15 NET So Jesus replied to him, "Let it happen now, for

it is right for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then John

yielded to him.

Page 63: Great Commission 6

Acts 10:34 NET Then Peter started speaking: "I now

truly understand that God does not show favoritism in dealing with people, 35 but in every nation the person

Page 64: Great Commission 6

who fears him and does what is right is welcomed before him.

Psalms 119:172 NET May my tongue sing about your instructions, for all your commands are

just.

Page 65: Great Commission 6

Matthew 25:46 NET And these will depart into eternal

punishment, but the righteous into eternal

life."

Page 66: Great Commission 6

Our sins are washed away;we are pure.

Acts 22:16 NET And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized, and have your sins washed away,

calling on his name.'

Page 67: Great Commission 6

Hebrews 10:22 NET let us draw near with a sincere heart in the

assurance that faith brings, because we have had our hearts

sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed

in pure water.

Page 68: Great Commission 6

Page 70: Great Commission 6

We are put into Christ and His body/church/kingdom;

Romans 6:3 NET Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ were baptized into his death?

Page 71: Great Commission 6

4 Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into

death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the

dead through the glory of the Father,

Page 72: Great Commission 6

so we too may live a new life. 5

For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his

death, we will certainly also be united in the likeness of his

resurrection.

Page 73: Great Commission 6

Galatians 3:27 NET For all of you who were baptized

into Christ have clothed yourselves with

Christ.

Page 74: Great Commission 6

1 Corinthians 12:13 NET For in one Spirit we were all baptized

into one body. Whether Jews or Greeks or slaves or free, we were all made to drink of the one Spirit.

Page 75: Great Commission 6

John 3:3 NET Jesus replied, "I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born from above, he

cannot see the kingdom of God." 4 Nicodemus said to him,

"How can a

Page 76: Great Commission 6

man be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother's womb and be

born a second time, can he?" 5 Jesus answered,

Page 77: Great Commission 6

"I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born of water and

spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

Page 78: Great Commission 6

Colossians 1:13 NET He delivered us from the power of

darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of the Son

he loves,

Page 79: Great Commission 6

Acts 2:47 NET praising God and having the good will of all the people. And the Lord

was adding to their number every day those who were

being saved.

Page 80: Great Commission 6

We are made heirs;Romans 8:16 NET The Spirit

himself bears witness to our spirit that we are God's

children. 17 And if children, then heirs

Page 81: Great Commission 6

(namely, heirs of God and also fellow heirs with

Christ) if indeed we suffer with him so we may also be

glorified with him.

Page 82: Great Commission 6

1 Peter 1:4 NET that is, into an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven

for you,

Page 83: Great Commission 6

When should I be baptized?

When I believe what the Bible says about

baptism (note the way that

questioners responded)

Page 84: Great Commission 6

Acts 2:37 NET Now when they heard this, they were

acutely distressed and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "What should we

do, brothers?“

Page 85: Great Commission 6

Acts 9:6 NET But stand up and enter the city and you will be told what you must do."

Page 86: Great Commission 6

Today2 Corinthians 6:2 NET For he says, "I

heard you at the acceptable time, and in the day of salvation I

helped you." Look, now is the acceptable time; look, now is the

day of salvation !

Page 87: Great Commission 6

James 4:14 NET You do not know about tomorrow. What is your

life like? For you are apuff of smoke that appears for a

short time and then vanishes.

Page 88: Great Commission 6

Acts 2:41 NET So those who accepted his message were

baptized, and that day about three

thousand people were added.

Page 89: Great Commission 6

ImmediatelyActs 9:18 NET Immediately something like scales fell

from his eyes, and he could see again. He got up and

was baptized,

Page 90: Great Commission 6

Acts 16:33 NET At that hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and all his family were

baptized right away.

Page 91: Great Commission 6

In light of the fact that baptism is mentioned so

often in the New Testament, and in light of the fact that

the above questions are definitely

Page 92: Great Commission 6

answered in the New Testament, and in light of the

fact that almost no one teaches these things, the

emphasis on this subject is entirely appropriate.

Page 93: Great Commission 6

If you have never studied this subject, or if you have never obeyed this commandment,

please take the time immediately to attend to it.

Page 94: Great Commission 6

Remember,it was Jesus

Who made it partof the Great Commission.
