Excuses for not evangelizing
I’m scaredI don’t know
how to witness
They may ask a question I can’t answer
I don’t know how to start a conversation
about the Lord
I am afraid my friends will
remember the bad things I have done.
The true excuse: I am ashamed …
• Romans 1: 16• 16 For I am not
ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. (NIV)
Hebrews 12: 1-2 • 1 Therefore we
also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
• 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (NKJV)
When are we ashamed of the Gospel?
• We are not ashamed of the gospel in church
• We are not ashamed when with other Christians
• We are ashamed when we are out in the world
Do you tell the “cloud” of unbelieving witnesses …• That your faith is
the most important thing in your life?
• That you will not lie?• That Christ has the
power to heal?• That you’ll not have
premarital sex?• That you’re married
and will not have affairs?
• That you’re inviting them to your church?
What is being ashamed?• You set
expectations• You fail to meet
expectations• You are found out
…. You are ashamed!– Your skills &
resources– Your parents
/children/ family– Your faith– Your church
Matthew 26: 31-35:Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial• 31 Then Jesus told
them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written:
• “‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
• 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
• 33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”
• 34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”
Matthew 26: 31-35:Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial• 35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have
to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same. (NIV)
Matthew 26: 69 -75Peter Disowns Jesus
• 69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.
• 70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.
• 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”
• 72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”
Matthew 26: 69 -75Peter Disowns Jesus
• 73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”
• 74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed.
• 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.
