Hijra
• From 622 AD• Importance of Migration?• Islamic Year (AH = After Hijra)
Muharram
• 1st month of Islamic Calendar• 10 days• 10th - Ashurah
Prophets Birthday
• “God and His angels send blessing on the Prophet. O ye that believe! Send blessings on him and salut him with all respect.” (Quran 33v56)
Isra & Miraj
• Isra – Night journey• Miraj – Ascension
• “Glory to god who did take His servant for a journey by night from the sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque whose precincts we did bless – in order that we might show him some of our signs; for He is the one who heareth and seeth all things.” (Quran 17 v1)
Ramadan
• 9th month of Islamic calendar.• 29 or 30 days• Fasting from dawn to sunset.• Special evening prayers –
‘taraweeh’• Last 10 days, special night prayers
– ‘Qiyam’• ‘Layat al-Qadr’ – Night of Power
Eid Al-Fitr
• 1st Shawwal• 3 day festival
Day of Arafat
• 9th Dhul-Hijjah• The main day of the Hajj when the
pilgrims spend their time supplicating & seeking forgiveness from God.
Eid Al-Adha
• 10th Dhul-Hijjah• 4 day festival
Sacred Months
• “The number of months in the sight of God is twelve (in a year) so ordained by Him. The day He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are sacred” (Quran 9v36)
• Dhul Qadah, Dhul Hijja Muharram & Rajab
• 4 months during which Muslims are encouraged to fast and shouldn’t fight.
