Mark 14:1 Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away Mark 14:12 the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb Passover is the name given to the chief of the three great celebrations, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Tabernacles. Passover is often called the "feast of unleavened bread." Luke 22:1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover Matt 26:17 Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?" 4. Mark 14:1, What Is Passover? God commanded it to be kept in remembrance of the Lord's passing over the houses of the Israelites when the Jews were saved, but all the first born of Egypt died. Lev 23:5-14 The Lord's Passover begins at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month. On the fifteenth day of that month the Lord's Feast of Unleavened Bread beginsThis is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live. 5. Why Keep The Passover? Mark 14:1-16 The disciples went out and came to the city, and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover. The NAS uses Passover 79 Xs, and 28 of those Xs are in the NT. 1 Corinthians 5:7 Clean out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. 8 Let us therefore celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Exodus 12:14 you shall celebrate it as a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as a permanent ordinance. Moses, in, Hebrews 11:28 By faith he kept the Passover. Matthew 26: 2-19, Luke 2:41, 22:1-15, John 2:13, 6:4, 19:14 6. Mark 14:2, Not During The Festival? Mark 14:2 for they were saying, "Not during the festival, otherwise there might be a riot of the people. When did they do it? Whos in charge here? John 13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father John 16:4I have spoken to you, so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you John 17:1 Jesus said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, 7. Mark 14:3, Simon the Leper Mark 14:3 While He was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, and reclining at the table, there came a woman with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume of pure nard; and she broke the vial and poured it over His head. They were at the home of Simon the leper, it must have been miracle healing! 8. Mark 14:3, alabaster, muron, Nard NET Notes (Mar 14:3) 8 sn A jar made of alabaster stone was normally used for very precious substances like perfumes. It normally had a long neck which was sealed and had to be broken off so the contents could be used. 9 tn (muron) was usually made of myrrh (from which the English word is derived) but here it is used in the sense of ointment or perfumed oil (L&N 6.205). The adjective (pistikes) is difficult with regard to its exact meaning; some have taken it to derive from (pistis) and relate to the purity of the oil of nard. More probably it is something like a brand name, "pistic nard," the exact significance of which has not been discovered. sn Nard or spikenard is a fragrant oil from the root and spike of the nard plant of northern India. This aromatic oil, if made of something like nard, would have been extremely expensive, costing up to a year's pay for an average laborer. 9. Mark 14:3, Simon the Leper Mark 14:3 While He was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper 10. Mark 14:7, You Always Have The Poor Mark 14:7 "For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me. Mans attempts to end poverty in the world are doomed, until the Prince of Peace comes! 11. Mark 14:1-9, Her Heart Was Right Psalms uses heart 117 Xs in the NASU out of 726 uses, 2Xs more than any other book, 1/6th. of all the uses. Psalms is a heart book! Mark 14:1-9 Luke 10:38-42, Marys Heart Was Right Marys heart was good, Luke 10:38-42, 42 but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her. Her motive, intention, and act were right John 11:5 Acts 8:21 "You have no part or portion in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. 12. Mark 14:9, What She Has Done Mark 14:9 And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her. We are fulfilling this prophecy, again, right now. Only 2 NAS uses of memory Although my memory's fading, I remember two things very clearly: I am a great sinner and Christ is a great Savior. --John Newton (former slaver, pastor, composer of Amazing Grace) 13. Mark 14:9, Whole World TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT, ANOTHER EVOLUTIONARY MYTH ABOUT MAN Scientists have sometimes eagerly reported the discovery of primitive tribes that they think are not advanced enough to farm or keep their own animals. When they were first discovered in 1962, the Agta people of Luzon were introduced to the world as living fossils. Later, one researcher who lived with the Agta for some time so that he could study them, heard someone singing in English outside his tent one night. One of the Agta women was singing her baby to sleep with a religious song in English. So much for the innocent, primitive, living fossil theory! Similar long-term studies of other hunter- gatherer groups around the world have shown that the whole idea of living fossil hunter-gatherers is a myth. A 1989 issue of Science News carried an article on the subject with the interesting title, A World that Never Existed. Notes: Bruce Bower. A World that Never Existed. Science News, vol. 135, p. 264. Mark 14:10, His Heart Was Not Right Mark 14:11 They were glad when they heard this, and promised to give him money. And he began seeking how to betray Him at an opportune time. Why did Judas go to hell? His motive was money, it was premeditated, he was not born again. Charles F. Banning comments that, Too many of us have a Christian vocabulary rather than a Christian experience. Acts 8:21 "You have no part or portion in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. [GING] , , guest room, dining room Mk 14:14; Lk 22:11. Since Lk 10:34 uses the more specific term for inn, , the term . in 2:7 is best understood as guest room.* [pg 103] 18. Mark 14:14 My Guest Room 19. Mark 14:14, My Guest Room J. Vernon McGee and others dont see Mark 14:13-16 as a providential miracle, but as something the LORD pre-arranged. 20. Mark 14:18, Reclining At The Table Luke 22:14 And when the hour had come He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. Guests would lie around the outside edges, leaning on cushions, on their left elbow while eating with their right hand. This means the woman who washed Jesus' feet at dinner in Luke 7, wasn't crawling around under the table, but most likely kneeling between the guests. Mark 14:21, Not Your Sunday School Jesus Matthew 26:24 "The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born. Better if he had not been born. To choose to reject Gods love, His plan, sovereignty, His own Son is folly of the highest order. Jesus pulls no punches, He tells it like it is.
