Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (Vol. 6, Issue 6) June 2009

Is it possible to really be content?

Ask someone who is a “collector” if they can becontent – most want “just one more… (Whatever theycollect)” There is a snack company that tells us wecannot be content, that it is impossible to stop –“Nobody can eat just one”. Advertising is constantlytelling us that our lives are not complete unless we getthis or that.

Saint Paul says, “I have learned to be content nomatter what happens to me.” Philippians 4:11b. Howcool is that?

The original word for “content” in Greek ispronounced, “ow-tar-kace”, It only appears once inthe whole of Scripture. When translated, “ow-tar-kace” means:

• Sufficient for one’s self• Strong enough or processing enough to need no

aid or support• Independent of external circumstances• Contented with one’s lot, with one’s means,

though the slenderest

In verse twelve of the same chapter he says, “Iknow what it’s like not to have what I need. I alsoknow what it’s like to have more than I need. I havelearned the secret of being content no matter whathappens. I am content whether I am well fed or

hungry. I am content whether I have more thanenough or not enough.”

What is his secret? We want to learn it!

Part of our human nature is to be greedy, territorial, and possessive, to gather and save, and to accumulate. Ibelieve it’s our insecurity at work. What do you think?

We will get to Paul’s secret in a minute, but let’sdetour back to a Bible story – When the Children ofIsrael were given Manna from Heaven while on thewilderness walk, they got just enough for a day. Ifthey tried to hoard it, it would smell bad and becomemaggot-infested. Yikes! See Exodus 16:20. Similarly, when we accumulate too much stuff, we cannot keepup with it! It begins to own us or it falls into ruinbecause we cannot take care of it all!

Then, how can we be content, what is the secret?

Paul gives the secret in the next verse, “I can doeverything by the power of Christ. He gives mestrength.” - Philippians 4:11. It’s that simple? Yes!

If Paul, back 2000 years ago, could be contentwithout all the stuff we have, he must be ontosomething! Not only that, here is a guy who facedtrouble on his walk…

“From the Jews five times I received forty stripesminus one. Three times I was beaten with rods; once Iwas stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a nightand a day I have been in the deep; in journeys often,in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of myown countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils inthe city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea

in perils among false brethren; inweariness and toil, in sleeplessnessoften, in hunger and thirst, infastings often, in cold andnakedness – besides the otherthings, what comes upon medaily: My deep concern for all thechurches.” – 2 Corinthians 11:24-28 (New King James Version)

He faced all that, and still wascontent! Wowsers! We might askourselves, “What makes mediscontent?” Some say that thenews stations actually selldiscontent by telling us everythingthat is wrong in this world. Otherssay that advertisers do the same, telling us we will really be happywhen we purchase their item.Anddiscontentment is just in our nature.

But God can daily transformus and give us contentment nomatter what! Is there more toPaul’s secret? Tell me more!

Another one of Paul’s secretsto contentment is giving thanks,no matter what. When the toastburns, thank the Lord the housedid not burn down, it was only thebread. When the traffic light islong, thank the Lord for a time tobe still. When you are runninglate, thank Him for teaching youhumility. When the finances are

low, we give Himthanks for familyand friends who maysee us through. Whenrelationships are strained, thankHim for His forgiveness to us,that we are able to forgive others. When the scale is off the mark, thank Him for being well fed. When the doctor givesunwelcome message, give Himthanks that Heaven in your home. When someone steals, thank Himthat your riches are in Heaven.Giving thanks goes a long waytoward contentment, as Saint Paulsays – “Give thanks in allcircumstances, for this is God’swill for you in Christ Jesus.” –1 Thessalonians 5:18.

Let’s find something we arediscontent about and give thanksfor it! Pastor Dave

Let me tell you about an oldGerman legend. It begins with afarming community that had beenhit, year after year, by drought anddisaster. Rather than undergo thispruning, for which they could seeno possible good, the townspeoplecame together and had a talk withGod. They said, “Lord, our cropshave been scanty, skimpy, andsmall. If You have no majorobjection, and we hope You don’t,we’d like to run the show.”

Now, as the story goes, Godwho knows best and is alwayscaring, usually doesn’t give in tothose kinds of requests. But thistime, for reasons of His own, Hesaid, “Okay, I’ll let you take control- for one year.” And that’s just whathappened. If the villagers wantedrain, they got rain. If they wantedsun, they got sun. That year the cropgrew bigger and thicker than it hadever grown before. But there was noharvest that year! NONE AT ALL!

Once again, the peoplecomplained. And God said, “Yougot what you asked for. But youdidn’t ask for what you needed! Mychildren, along with the sun and therain, you also need the hard windsthat come out of the north. Withoutthose winds, the plants do notpollinate and you get no crop.”

Imagine, if you will, you werespeaking to God like that Germanvillage. What would you ask theLord to remove from your life? Areyou plagued by some sadness, suffering, or struggle? Does it seem

that there is no purpose to yourproblems other than to cause somesort of unexplainable annoyance? Ifthat is the case, I encourage you toconsider these two things: First, learn from the German village.Although we humans think weknow what is best for us, our visioninto the future is extremely limited. We, with our nearsightedboundaries, are not able to see howall things can work together forgood to those who are called to theLord’s purpose. (Romans 8:28)

Second, learn from our Savior. As He knelt in the Garden ofGethsemane, as He carried our sins,as He looked to the Cross, Jesusasked if it were possible for His cupof suffering to be taken away. Jesushad no great desire to go through theintense agony that awaited Him.Nevertheless, He was willing toplace His life into the Father’shands. That is what we, who havebeen saved, need to do - ask theFather to use our lives according toHis Will, for the greater good!

“Give me, give me, give me.”So goes the continuous chant ofchildren to their parents. “Give medessert. Give me my allowance.Give me the car keys.” Even aninfant’s wordless cries say, “Giveme. Give me a clean diaper. Giveme food. Give me time. Give mecomfort.” One might expect ourLord Jesus to discourage suchconstant begging and pleading, butinstead He teaches us that prayer isthis: God’s children asking theFather. We are to keep asking

because we desperately need whatonly the Father can and does give.We need everything. The Fatherdoes the giving!

By Holy Baptism, God is ourFather, and He only gives truly goodgifts. All our needs of body, life andsoul are met by God alone. He sentHis Son to teach us to ask foreverything we need: forgiveness, salvation, life, peace, and joy - fromGod the Father!

To quote the late SteveWadzinski, “If you cannot travelaround the world, walk around theblock.” It’s also been said, “Whatwe need the most we resist themost.” If you are fighting theblues, staying home all the timeuntil the dark days pass may makethe dark days park a shadow rightover your roof.

There are things we can dothat are free and good-moodenergizing. Here are just a few…

• Walk a small section theFox River Trail

• Go to the NEW Zoo• Walk the Wildlife Sanctuary• Park your car at a boat

launch and watch the boaters• Mail your bills at the main

post office and go to the DQon the way home

• Get out a deck of cards andplay a game on a little tableon the driveway

• Go buy a kite and go to apark to fly it

• Bake something and handdeliver it to a neighbor or afriend

• Go to the mall and walk

• Walk through BarkhausenWaterfowl Preserve

• Dust off your bicycle andride down the block and back

• Forget your age, walk to thecandy store again

• Get out your sneakers andwalk somewhere, anywhere

• Get off the electronics andtie your walking shoes

• Take a trip to the library• Walk around the block and

pick up litter• Read a book on your front

steps• Go buy a plant and plant it –

then check on it often• Take a walk around the

outside of the house andlook for plants coming up

• Shake a rug outside – Takeyour time, you may notwant to go back in thehouse!

Memorize the term,G.O.O.T.H., and when you areblue, remember it!

Know that God made creationfor us to enjoy – Get out of thehouse!

Listen to the Children – Take a moment to listen todayto what your children are trying to say. Listen today, whatever you do, or they won’t be around to listen toyou. Listen to their problems; listen to their needs.Praise their triumphs; praise their deeds. Tolerate theirchatter; join in their laughter. Find out what’s thematter; check out what they’re after. Tell them youlove them every day and night; and though you scoldthem, hold them very tight. Listen today, whatever youdo; then in the future, they’ll listen to you. Take amoment today to listen to what your children say.“Fathers, do not exasperate your children, that theymay not lose heart.” – Colossians 3:21

Have Patience! – A man’s car stalled in heavy Fridayevening traffic just as the stop light turned from red togreen. All his efforts to restart failed. A chorus ofclacking horns rose from the cars behind him.Frustrated he turned the key again. Nothing. Nothingbut the blasting of car horns! Finally, he got out of hiscar, walked back to the first honking driver. Holdingout the keys, he said, “I’m sorry but it won’t start forme. If you’ll go and give it a try, I’ll stay back hereand honk!” How we need to pray for patience! “Bestill in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently forhim to act. Don’t worry about evil people whoprosper or fret about their wicked schemes. Stopbeing angry! Turn from your rage! Do not lose yourtemper…it only leads to harm. For the wicked will bedestroyed, but those who trust in the Lord will possessthe land.” – Psalm 37:7-9

Crime Cure – A famous psychologist was talkingto a female client. She asked him, “How earlyshould I begin the education of my child in theways of the world?”

Freud replied with a question of his own. “Whenwill your child be born?”

“Born?” She replied, “he’s two years old.” “My goodness,” the professional cried, “Don’t sit

here asking stupid questions! Hurry home to yourchild! You’ve already wasted two years!”“Train a child in the way he should go … he will notdepart from it.” – Proverbs 22:6

Determination – Once upon a time, Johnny dreamedof playing pro-football. After no pro-team drafted him,he wrote to team after team asking for a chance. At last… a try-out! He gave his best but was turned away, coaches telling him he was not good enough for pro-football. Johnny was not a quitter. He wrote letters. Heknocked on doors. He talked to every person involvedin football he could contact. Then, another invitationcame! Again, he struck out. Most people would havegiven up … but not Johnny. He returned to writing, calling, contacting. Finally, he got another try-out andmade third string! He practiced. He did every drillagain and again. He worked day and night perfectinghis quarterback skills and eventually made starter. Hewas in! Who was this dreamer who wouldn’t quit? Oneof the greatest quarterbacks ever to play in the NFL …Johnny Unitas! Never stop! Are you facing whatappears to be a losing battle? We may not becomeprofessional quarterbacks, but we can have anunstoppable hope in living …“Now if we are afflicted,it is for your consolation and salvation, which iseffective for enduring the same sufferings which wealso suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for yourconsolation and salvation. And our hope for you issteadfast, because we know that as you are partakersof the sufferings, so also you will partake of theconsolation.” – 2 Corinthians 1:6-7

Watch that Hammer! –When someone loses theirtemper it is said he “flew off the handle.” This refers tothe head of a hammer coming loose when the carpenterswings it. Several things happen as a result:

• First, the hammer becomes useless–no longergood for work–and the angry person loses hiseffectiveness.

• Second, the hammerhead flying through the air islikely to damage anything in its path andphysically hurt someone. Anger hurts both thegiver and the receiver.

• Third, the repair of the hammer takes time andeffort. Wasted time, wasted effort.

Keep your temper today. Nobody else wants it! “Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.” – Psalm 37:8

Kids, Christ and Camp Luther

Whenever kids get togetherwith Christ at camp it’s a greattime! It’s a time for kids to havefun, meet new friends, and mostimportantly, to help them build astronger foundation of faith in JesusChrist. That’s the bottom line.

The North Wisconsin District -LCMS wants every kid to be ableto attend a week of summer campat Camp Luther before they reachthe 9th grade. Why 9th grade?Because what you know aboutJesus Christ as an adult waslearned by 9th grade. We need toreach kids with the Good News ofJesus before they reach highschool age. It’s that important!Cost should not keep any kid fromgoing to camp. And, we will letthem go to camp for free!

The “Every Kid to Camp”ministry is going to hold anauction on Saturday, September12, 2009, in Wausau, to help sendkids (for those 3rd - 8th graderswho have not been to a week ofsummer camp before) to camp forfree. I need your help to make thishappen in a couple of ways. First, you are invited to attend. We needpeople there. Your congregationwill receive an invitation inAugust. I hope to see you there.

You can also help by donatinga silent auction item (worth $50 ormore) and/or a live auction itemthat has a higher value. Items canbe homemade, artwork, signed art, signed Green Bay Packer items, cars, boats, canoes, kayaks, huntingand/or fishing guide packages on

local lakes/land, condos down south,in-kind services, etc.

You can also make aninvestment in kids by helping ussend 275 kids to camp nextsummer (2010). You can become aNew Partner in Ministry bydonating $100 or more. If youhaven’t donated to Camp Luther inthe last five years, and we get 600people to invest, Thrivent will giveCamp Luther $35,000. What aboost in ministry that will be!

Please let me know if you areable to help out in any way. I needthe auction items by August 12,2009. Send donations to:

Camp Luther1889 Koubenic Road Three Lakes, WI 54562

Please note “Every Kid toCamp” on your check. If you are aThrivent member, Thrivent willgive Camp Luther $1 for every $2donated up to $300. Well send youa form.

Thank you very much. Belooking for the invitation. Get agroup together for an evening offood, fun and fellowship to helpkids build a stronger foundation offaith in Jesus Christ.

There are many folks servingthe Saviour (servant-volunteers)that we assume will always bethere. And there is room for more! What if they did not serve? Oh my!

Imagine that it’s Sundaymorning. As you walk into churchyou notice the Welcome Desk isempty. We shrug and think they’relate again. Climbing the steps wehead immediately for the coffee pot– but no one is there. We sigh.

Where are those people? Howcan we have cookies if there isn’tany coffee? Well, well! We turn tothe cookie bar. No cookies? Nobars? What is this? Baffled, we noteother members are just milling

around, asking for an explanation –then walk silently into church. Oh,this is just fine!

A bit upset we head in butthere’s no usher smiling, handing usa bulletin. We notice there are pilesof unfolded announcement sheetsand bulletins on a table with a sign,“Help yourself”. Irritated becausethings are not what we expect, wewalk down to our usual pew. Nocandles flickering on the Altar. ThePraise Band Stand bare – drums andmusic stands gone.

Strange. We look over ourshoulder to the Choir Loft, expecting to see something lurkingin the dim and misty shadows by

the organ. A shiver coils down ourspines and feelings of sickapprehension choke us.

Lights are on but they seemdimmer and further away. Thelump in our stomachs grow and wefind our hands clenched together. Is this a joke? Did we misssomething last week? Was there anannouncement in The Voice wedidn’t bother reading?”

We are so grateful this is NOTthe way it is… God’s joyfulservants (OSLC volunteers) havestepped forward, but there is roomand a need for more!

Please consider becoming areader, a cookie maker, a coffeeserver or an usher. To volunteer callthe church office, 468-4065.“The greatest among you will beyour servant.” Matthew 23:11

Imagine if God’sPeopleDid Not Step Forward to Serve.
