Every day  he would look out of  his window into the snow covered streets while he worked hoping that somehow he would catch a glimpse of God (reading about snow was always most fun for us kids in Calcutta as it never snows there !). 09

Then one day a small frail boy, with torn clothes shivering in the cold was crossing the street. He stopped to rest a moment near the shoemaker's window.

When Joseph saw the boy, somehow he felt sympathy for him. He walked out to the street, and asked the boy to come inside his store and warm himself up a little if he wished. The boy gratefully did so. The shoemaker also gave him some of his own clothes, although he did not have much himself. After a while, upon fully recovering, the boy left thanking him deeply for his help. 11

Then days, and weeks past. Joseph continued to patiently wait for God to reveal himself to him, as he prayed and he worked in his trade. Then one day, when the snow was deep, a blind man appeared in front of his window walking slowly with a cane. He wanted to cross the street but was hesitating as he could not see if any vehicles were coming. 13

Joseph felt sympathy for the blind man. He stopped his work and went out in the cold snow and offered to help the blind man cross the street. The blind man gratefully accepted his offer and holding the shoemaker's hand, crossed the street. Then he went on his way, thanking him for his kind deed, and giving him blessings.

Days, weeks, and months passed by. Joseph patiently waited to see God.

Then again, one day, when the snow was deep, old women appeared across the street, crossing the street with a bag of grocery 15

And just as she finished crossing the street, & was in front of the shoemaker's window, she slipped & fell in the snow. Joseph immediately stopped his work and ran out to the street and helped the woman up on her feet, and got a bag from his store and pick up the grocery that could be saved and asked the woman to come into the store to warm herself. She wasn't hurt but she was cold and shivering 16

The woman was thankful for his kindness, and upon a brief rest, picked up her bag of groceries

and left. She thanked the shoemaker and blessed him, and was

quickly gone.

Days, weeks, and months passed, Joseph prayed, worked and hoped to somehow see God

face to face for he was a devout spiritual person. 17

Page 18: Polish children's story--Memory Of The Pale

Then one night while he was praying somehow he thought he fell asleep and he had a vivid dream.

There was a profusion of light and a voice appeared. The voice said "Joseph, Joseph, I am please with you for you have fulfilled your life by your deeds. Don't you remember me, Joseph, for you have seen me in the street in front of you. You have seen me!”

18

Then he clearly saw in the shining light, the smiling face of the young boy who was shivering in the cold in front of his store. He saw the blind old man smiling now as he blessed him raising his hand.

And he saw the old women with the grocery bag walking toward him, smiling and blessing him. Then the voice said, "You have fulfilled your life Joseph, for you have done my work. You have seen me and now you recognize me".
