FROM THE PRESBYTER’S DESK

WHY GIVE TO GOD?

November is the month of our Harvest festival. It is time for

thanksgiving. This Message delves deep into the aspect of giving,

from 7 dimensions. We pray that this be a blessing to you.

1. IT IS TO THANK GOD: Harvest Festival Service is a time of special

worship to thank God for all that He has done in our life and for our

family during the past year and before. God has commanded, “Never

come to worship Me without bringing an offering.” (Exodus 3:14-16). We

bring our special offerings on this Harvest Festival Day to thank God.

2. TIME TO HONOUR GOD: “Those who honour Me, I will honour,” says God

(I Samuel 2:30). “Honour God by giving Him an offering from the best of

all that you earn” (Proverbs 3:9). “It is the Lord who gives you the power

to earn and become rich, not by your own strength or effort”

(Deuteronomy 8:17,18). Honour Him therefore giving Him the best of

your time, talents and treasure.

3. GIVE HIM THE TITHES: “One tenth of all the produce of the land belongs

to the Lord” (Leviticus 27:30). If they didn’t give one tenth, they were

cheating God or robbing what was due to Him (Malachi 3:8). “Set aside

a tithe – a tenth of all your field’s produce each year. Do this so that you

may learn to honour the Lord your God always. At the end of every three

years, bring the tithes for the Levites since they own no property, and

for foreigners, orphans and widows. Do this and the Lord your God will

bless you in everything you do” (Deuteronomy 14:22-28).

4. NOT OUT OF GREED: God is the source of all our abundance. But, we

have to give God not expecting returns in greed. We give out of our love

for our God. We have to give faithfully in proportion of our income and

not just ten percent. Jesus condemned the Jewish hypocrites who just

gave ten percent of everything they produced and kept the remaining to

spend in whatever way they wanted. Giving is a demonstration of your

love for God. The more you give Him, the more you love Him. Any

increase you receive in return is only the by-product of your giving.

5. GIVE GENEREOUSLY IN GRATITUDE:

We give to meet the needs of

God’s ministers serving in remote

areas on our behalf. “God will

always make you rich enough to

be generous at all times, so that

many will thank God for your gifts.

For the service you perform not

only meets the needs of God’s people, but also produces an outpouring

of gratitude to God” (II Corinthians 9:11,12). A little boy gave all that he

had and Jesus fed women and children, besides 5000 men (John 6:9).

6. PLANT THE SEEDS: “No one makes a fool of God. A person will reap

exactly what he plants (Galatians 6:7). Remember that a person who

plans few seeds will have a small crop, the one who plants many seeds

will have a large crop. “Each one should give then as he has decided,

not with regret or out of sense of duty, for God loves the one who gives

gladly. And God is able to give you more than you need, more enough

for every good cause” (II Corinthians 9:6-9).

7. WE ARE ONLY STEWARDS: We have to give an account for the idle words

we speak, the good opportunities to serve we miss and for the time,

talents and resources given to us. As stewards of all that we have

received from God, we give an account in the end. Our wealth and

health, our intelligence and strength, our savings and earnings are all

due to God’s mercy. God expects us to use these wisely for the benefit

of the needy and give an account to Him. Above all, we should offer

ourselves as a living sacrifice for the service of God (Romans 12:1).

THE COMMANDMENT

The 10 commandments are a compass for

Christian living. A refresher.

God said, "Love the LORD with all your heart,

mind, soul and strength;

Love thy neighbour as thyself.

Six days thou shalt work and on the seventh thou shalt rest.

Honour thy father and mother.

And thus be blest ".

He said; "Commit no adultery, nor steal, nor kill;

Bear no false witness against thy neighbour.

Covet not thy neighbour's house nor the things that are his.

Honour thy father and mother

And thus be blest".

SONG COMPOSED BY MR CYRIL MANI

A POEM TO PONDER

THE HARVEST in our life Tithe is very important in a Christian’s life,

No matter, if we go through struggle and strife;

“It is more blessed to give than to receive,” (Acts 20:35)

And ignore Satan who is ready to stop and deceive!

“Give and it shall be given unto you,” (Luke 6:38)

Is a saying that is so true;

When we give God gladly,

He blesses us more abundantly!

The poor widow put in all that she had, (Mark 12:42)

She gave it away willingly without being sad;

Never realising how she would live,

While out of their abundance did the rich give!

We should be an example and live,

Never restrain when it is in our power to give;

Whether the offering be big or small,

To God’s glory, give it all!

Freely has He given the entire universe (100%) to us,

All that we could give is 10% from our purse -

Or depending upon our circumstance; so as we sow, so we reap;

When rich blessings He shall heap!

We look forward to increment/promotion –

To fulfil our desires to some proportion;

But having received these additional blessings;

Do some of us increase our tithings?

We have to pay Income Tax without fail,

Or else land in jail;

When it comes to tithes, some grudge,

And from their stand do not budge!

We cannot expect a HARVEST,

If we do not willingly invest;

For it is the seeds (TITHE) that we plant, That great reward shall HE grant! BY MRS. S. CYNTHIA MUKHERJEE, FROM THE UAE

A THANKSGIVING TESTIMONY

God’s Ways are mysterious indeed God sends His Angels, literally. Read this testimony of faith.

“No money.” This was a phrase we heard often at home and enough times

to know that there were some things you just had to accept. Growing up,

my sisters and I knew better than to ask what was for lunch when we

returned from school. It would only serve to further frustrate our long-

suffering mother. This paucity of funds was certainly not due to a lack in

effort or capability. Far from it. Both our parents left no stone unturned to

try and give us everything we deserved and indeed desired; yet, somehow

fortune never seemed to favor them, and subsequently us.

It was on one such afternoon of circumstantial fasting that the six of us

were to be found singing away the last vestiges of energy we had left.

Being staunch Christians, we shared an unswerving faith in the providence

of God and even in that dismal hour, we thought it best to sing His praises.

Our impromptu concert was interrupted by a soft rapping on the open door

of our humble home. At the doorstep stood a stranger clad in a printed

shirt with the top three buttons open and a lungi. In his hands he carried

two "tiffin carriers". In response to my father’s questions, all he said was

"Martha Aunty sent it for Baby Aunty " (my mom’s nickname).

This unexpected gesture of kindness was barely thanked when the

gentleman took our leave. When the carriers were opened we were

absolutely delighted to find a huge stack of the most delectable parathas

and what could only be described as the most succulent shammi kababs.

We waited patiently, despite growling stomachs, as our mother divided the

food and served it. Once we had all had enough, I still remember there

were five parathas and almost a dozen kababs left over.

Later that evening, my parents visited Martha aunty to return the

containers and thank her for her kindness. Her surprise at being the

recipient of unwarranted thanks perplexed them but they just assumed it

was the other Martha they knew. So, they ventured to her home to give the

angel her due, and her containers.

The other Martha also denied this act of generosity and now my parents

were truly befuddled! The whole of that week was spent trying in vain to

find out who this Martha aunty was. Every effort to locate her delivery man

also failed. Finally my parents were distracted by the daily grind and the

episode was put to rest.

Even today, I cannot help but wonder if those delectable and superlative

parathas and kebabs were not God’s way of showering us with His

blessings, especially because, right before we were visited by that Angel

these were the words we were singing: “when peace like a river attendeth

my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll, whatever my lot, thou has

taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul.”

YOUTH SECTION OF FAITH

7 Times Stronger When the going gets tough, hold on. Hold on to Him. Trust Him.

I am sure you can relate to this... Does it ever happen to you, that when you

decide to Trust God to get you out of a certain situation, things get worse?

The truth is, the enemy will do all it takes to take your trust in God away! Just

when you have told your troubles that God is on my side and I will not fear, you

see things getting worse. Well, I have been there before and I know some

Hebrew guys who faced a similar if a not worse situation.

Reading the story of Shadrack, Meshack and Abednego, you will get it better.

When they had openly told the king they would not bow down to the graven

image because they had God, the King told them, if you will bow now, good for

you! But if you don't then I will throw you into the fire. When they refused, the

King ordered that the fire be made 7 times hotter! (This was done to make

them lose their hope, their faith, to give up or give in).

For some, this means things getting 7 times tougher, situations getting 7 times

worse, getting 7 times more difficult to pray or read your Bible, being 7 times

more difficult get a job, 7 times more difficult to get married, 7times more

difficult to get a child, 7 times more difficult to focus (and the list goes on).

The 3 Hebrew guys however, did not bow and they were put into the 7 times

hotter fiery burning furnace. The good news: even with it being 7 times hotter,

they were not burnt, neither did they even smell of smoke. The best part: the

ones who had put them into the fire, could see them not just doing fine in

there, but having a 4th person who looked like the Son of God with them.

My dear friend, the devil can only try you; he can only make things worse!

Everything he does is to scare you to lose your faith or make you shake. If only

we could be bold enough to face him and to trust the Lord through it all; if only

we could stand and not lose hope; if only we could look beyond the 7 times

worse situation and look to God who is with us and will be with us even in the

worst of conditions.

When things get 7 times worse, remember the Hebrew guys and how through it

all God was with them. Remember how it ended! Just Trust Him. "Let us hold

fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is

faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23)

God Bless You!

Turn Adversities into

Advantages!

A small slice from this maestro’s life

has an important lesson for us.

Fritz Kreisler (1875 to 1962) was a great

violinist and orchestral composer. But he used to spend major portion of his

income towards charity.

One day, when Kreisler went into a musical shop, he saw an old violin. He

played on the violin and produced scintillating music. He wanted to buy it but

the cost was prohibitive.

Kreisler returned home and worked hard. After giving some music

performances, he earned money to buy that violin. He hurried to the shop. To

his dismay, the violin was not available.

The shop owner said, “Only yesterday, the industrialist George bought it... Yes…

He liked it very much.” Immediately Kreisler’s face became small. He rushed to

George’s house.

George was so proud that he did not like to meet Kreisler. As his Secretary

talked high about Kreisler, George agreed to meet him.

Kreisler said, “I liked the violin which was bought by you yesterday sir… I

require it to play solo. If you give it for the same price…”

“No, no… I bought it for my daughter. Why should I sell it?”

“Sir… I will pay twice the money sir… Please…”

“Don’t play with me. Do you think I am greedy? If I wish, I can buy you.”

8 9

Kreisler’s heart was broken. However, he wanted to try some other method to

change the decision of George. “Sorry sir, I offended your feelings. Will you

please allow me to play a song on the violin?”

With great hesitation, George agreed to this. Kreisler got the violin and seated

it on his shoulder. He played a tragic solo. It reflected his mood. It touched the

heart of the listeners. Did it talk to the inner heart of George?

George’s heart began to melt. His eyes welled up with tears.

Once Kreisler completed the solo, George talked with emotion… “Kreisler, I

don’t deserve this. You alone can give life to this violin. I gift it to you. Let

people enjoy your touching music!”

Yes, when two stones are rubbed, you get fire. If a problem is rubbed with a

talent, you get success.

“I am overflowing with joy in all our affliction.” 2 Corinthians 7:4
