St. Nicholas Ragkavas
The church of St. Nicholas Ragkava located northeast of the Acropolis between Prytaneiou and Epicharmou roads in Anafiotika and is one of the most important Byzantine monuments of the city.
After the construction has undergone major changes and additions.
According to written sources, the name belongs to Ragkavas important family of Athens and Konstantinoupolis (Istanbul), whose most notorious member was the emperor Michael Ragkavas the 1st (811-13).
Experts estimate that the building dates
to the 11th century (1040-50) because of
stylists characteristics that are similar to
those of many churches of this period.
