refers to school of thought or

Sunni Islam
THE FOUR SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT IN ISLAMIC LAW
Hanafi
Maliki
Shafi΄i
Hambali
A close study of the history of the madzahib and a
search into the reasons for their birth, existence, and
spread, reveals that the various governments were the
main factor in the birth and spread of these schools.
Governmental aid took physical and financial forms by
establishing schools, sponsoring books of fiqh (law),
adopting and sponsoring official madzahib, and giving
freedom to the founders and scholars of some of the
“official” madzahib. However, There is nothing wrong if a
Muslim wishes to follow one of these established schools
of jurisprudence as long as he does not become
chauvinistic and biased to it, and an opinion of his school
is not shown to go against clear textual evidence.
