“Hey George, I Never Knew You Wrote That!”
I wonder if the painting of George Washington is still hanging on the wall in my second grade classroom at Roosevelt Elementary School in Ames, Iowa. That painting never looked finished.
It wasn’t. According to Wikipedia, the artist, Gilbert Stuart never completed it. It was a work in progress. Wikipedia tells us, “Gilbert Stuart is widely considered to be one of America's foremost portraitists. His best known work, the unfinished portrait of George Washington that is sometimes referred to as The Athenaeum, was begun in 1796 and never finished; Stuart retained the portrait and used it to paint 130 copies which he sold for $100 each. The image of George Washington featured in the painting has appeared on the United States one-dollar bill for over a century, and on various U.S. Postage stamps of the 19th century and early 20th century.”
It is ironic that the unfinished painting is how George Washington saw his life. George saw his life as a work in progress. One of George’s more interesting writings is contained in a booklet called, “George Washington's Rules of Civility”. George was a gentleman, and strove to make progress and personal polish in that line of direction. Like the unfinished painting, George sought to improve himself. He set goals and standards to follow. Here is a snippet from this little booklet,
“Do not pare your nails in public, much less gnaw them.” If nothing else, his words are absolutely fun to read. You can find this book at various vendors. Because it is in the public domain, it can be read or downloaded on-line for fee. I see that Barnes and Noble has it for sale on-line for under $10 [hardcover]. Consider running an Internet search for the title, “George Washington's Rules of Civility”. Or, consider reading it here, for free: http://gwpapers.virginia.edu/documents/civility/transcript.html Now, back to the topic, of “being a work in progress”: In Christ, that is what we are. Humility reminds us of it. Our Savior has come because we are sinful, lost, broken, burdened and estranged before God. Actually, our sin is disgusting, damnably disgusting. The Savior came and has forgiven us, justified us by faith through His redeeming life-giving soul-saving sin-scrubbing completed work on the cross. Our faith in His gift there sets us free to newness of life.

(continued from page 1) But until we are done down here, in our faith-life and conduct, we are like that unfinished painting of George Washington; we are a work in progress. Philippians 1:6 tells us, “…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Now we enter in the realm of the Christ-like life, led by the Holy Spirit, guided by the Word, super-enriched by our Baptism, nourished by the Lord’s Supper and encouraged by fellowship. While George may help us in improving ourselves, he will fall short on motive. We have Christ-motivated conduct and God-directed living. Oh yes, George will also leave gaping holes where Christ’s healing grace covers our craters. Nonetheless, George has some good things to say. This is the right place to insert the wisdom, “Philosophers can make good men better but only Christ can make dead men live.” We are alive in Christ. As Christians, we are made whole again by faith in Christ, and at the same time we are continuously being healed from our sin-sick soul. While declared righteous by faith, at the same time we are being restored to an ongoing newness of life. Faith saves and faith improves, all at the same time. Our salvation is complete and we are a work in progress all at the same time. Salvation is ours by faith – this is called Justification. The work of the Holy Spirit in us is a dynamic in the life of Christian Lutherans called Sanctification. What does that newness look like? How can I keep my faith alive and fan it into flame in these often discouraging times?
The Holy Spirit works through the Word, putting our nose into it is how we get faith out of it. Consider a Bible class, or reading a chapter a day of a book you are the least familiar with. Consider reading The Sermon on the Mount – Matthew chapters 5-7 .
Baptism is a whole wonder; remind yourself that in it, you got wet in a holy way. You are clothed in Christ through it; you are coupled to His victorious life through it. Tell yourself this frequently. You are not your own, you are bought with a price.
The Lord’s Supper continues to heal the heart. Come to receive it. Humbly prepare for it in the days before receiving it, and contemplate on the joy of it for days afterwards.
Christ hides inside the sick and hungry, feed them and you will see Him. The church is a hospital; the more often we walk in the door for treatment, the healthier our soul will be. Our discouragement will be swallowed up by the mutual encouragement of being with the Communion
of Saints. Worship, not questioning what you can get out of it, but what burdens and praises you may bring to Him through it.
We will find joy in our duties when we are reminded they are given as gifts and not burdens. We learn that our complaints only amplify our problems while giving thanks for them will sharpen our
faith and our character. Pray that the Holy Spirit would work in you to shine His light through your life and conduct. Watch Him
present situations to make that light shine. Well, we have entered just past the screen door on the inner mansion of the Christian life! And yes, we are a work in progress, His progress in us. I still wonder if that unfinished painting of President Washington is hanging above the door in my old classroom.

How to Give Without Writing a Check SHOP WITH SCRIP! – When you purchase SCRIP, a portion of the sale amount is kept by Our Saviour. SCRIP may be purchased on Sunday mornings at the Welcome Center or from the office during normal business hours; some SCRIP may need to be ordered for pick up the following week. Many regularly purchased cards are ‘on-hand’ and available for immediate purchase including, but not limited to, the following:
Grocery Stores - Festival Foods, Copp’s, University SuperValu, Woodman’s Gas Stations - Shell, BP, Kwik Trip, Express, Exxon/Mobil Department Stores - Kohl’s, ShopKo, Wal-Mart, Fleet Farm Restaurants - McDonald’s, Subway, Starbucks, Applebee’s, Olive Garden/Red Lobster Drug Stores – Walgreen’s, CVS
SAVE THOSE CODES – Some may think of certain items as garbage but to Our Saviour, Trinity Elementary, Camp Luther and others, they mean cash. Check the boxes and labels from cereal, soup, vegetables and many other products before throwing them away. Look for and cut out these items and then bring them to church and place on the rolling cart in the main hallway. No need to sort; place them all in a bag and just bring it when you come to church!

Coca-Cola, Fanta, PowerAde and Dasani water WE’LL TAKE YOUR EMPTIES – Aluminum cans are recycled and the money is used by the trustees to purchase gas for the snow blower and lawnmower. Please bag and drop your cans in the small door in the garage. You can also recycle your cans at church in the kitchen, office or Youth Room. CLIP AND SAVE…FOR OTHERS – Manufacturer’s coupons are mailed to the military families serving at the US Air Force Base at Incirlik, Turkey. Those living overseas do not have the convenience of receiving coupons via the Sunday paper or other flyers but they can use coupons at the local base stores. Coupons can be expired (up to two months past the date). Please place in the top drawer of the cart near the 2nd floor elevator. CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? – Used cell phones are recycled by the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. Money received from recycling the phones is used to purchase phone cards for overseas soldiers. WE’LL TAKE THAT EXTRA STUFF OFF YOUR HANDS – Donate your good, used items to the Super Sale to be held on Saturday, August 17. Items in good, useable and saleable condition are welcome. We do not accept TV’s or computer monitors (unless flat panel), encyclopedia-type books or clothes. Donations are being taken NOW! VOLUNTEER! – Volunteering is a great way to give to Our Saviour without writing a check. Join an usher team, join a board, sing with the Choir, work at the Fish Fry, share with our children as a Sunday School teacher, etc. You can learn about these opportunities and more at the Fall Rally on September 8.

SWINGING TIMES FOR OUR SAVIOUR - Our Saviour is part of a Christian Softball League that plays games on Sunday nights at the Ashwaubenon Sports Complex. Games are scheduled to begin at 4:15, 5:30 and 6:45pm; a schedule of the times our teams play is on the bulletin board in the office hallway. There are 16 teams in Division 1/2 and 8 teams in Division 3. Each team plays 7 regular season games; tournament play begins on Sunday, July 21. Each team is guaranteed two tournament games so we will be playing at least until July 28. At the writing of this article, both our Division 1/2 and Division 3 teams have records of 3-2. It’s been a fun season with hard-played games and good fellowship. Bring a chair or sit on the stands, grab a drink or a snack and spend an hour soaking in the sunshine and enjoying a friendly softball game on a warm Sunday afternoon.
DEEP IN THE HEART!
San Antonio, here we come! Under the theme 'Deep In the Heart', tens of thousands of Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod youth and chaperones will descend upon San Antonio, Texas for the National Youth Gathering. From July 1-5, these young people will worship, pray, celebrate, fellowship, serve and more. Participants from Our Saviour will join others from around the country and around the globe to celebrate God. Please pray for this year's youth and chaperones: Brody Wians

IT’S AN EXTRA SUPER- SUPER SALE Put August 17th on your calendar, tell your friends and neighbors and don’t miss this one!! The doors will open at 8:00am sharp and close at 4:00pm.
This year’s Super Sale promises something for everyone. We have received a large quantity of donations so far but we can take more! Furniture (couches, chairs, loveseats, lamps, end tables, beds, dressers, bar stools, etc.), bedding (sheets, blankets, pillows, comforters, drapes, curtains, rods), decorations (Easter, Christmas and Fall items, pictures, knick knacks), entertainment (books, CDs, DVDs, VHS and cassette tapes), kitchen wares (small appliances, dishes, glassware, pots and pans, utensils), luggage (duffle bags, large suitcases, backpacks), sporting equipment (fishing, golf, ski and more), lawn and garden equipment and decorations, appliances (vacuum cleaners, Kenmore dryer) and more can be found here. What we DON”T TAKE are TV’s or computer monitors (unless flat panel), encyclopedia-type books, clothes and shoes.
Donations can be brought in during office hours (Monday thru Friday from 8-noon and 12:30-4:30pm) or on Sunday mornings. We ask that large items be
brought directly to the gym on or after July 27. Donations will be taken until noon on Wednesday, August 14 to allow time for cleaning, sorting and pricing.
If you need a large item picked up, please call the office at 468-4065 as soon as possible. We will schedule one or two pick up days in August for your large items.
Want to volunteer? Here’s what we need: 1) Help on Saturday, July 27 beginning at 9am to set up tables in the gym. 2) Help on Monday, July 29 moving the items from the basement to the gym. 3) Help setting up the gym for the sale; daily jobs include sorting, cleaning and pricing items as well as testing electric or battery operated items. 4) Help on the pickup crews (trucks, trailers and strong men are needed). Note: The
days/times for pick up are not set and will be determined based on crew/equipment availability and weather.
5) Ask for a poster or two to put up at work or a local store you frequent that has a community bulletin board.

IMPORTANT CALENDAR UPDATES - As we get into the swing of summer, we want you to know these important dates for events this fall. Family, friends and visitors are always welcome!
With fall always comes the new Packers season! We will again work at a food stand in the Club Seat area of Lambeau Field for all home Packer events, beginning with the Saturday, August 3 Family Night. All volunteers must complete a training session with Delaware North Companies, the new vendor at Lambeau Field. Training dates and times
are listed below.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Please call Neil Burmeister at 866-9088 to sign up for the date that works best for you.
Our annual Fall Rally/Fall Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday, September 8, 2013. On this day, there will be no 10:45am service. Everyone is invited to the gym to learn about volunteer opportunities at Our Saviour and join together for a potluck dinner in the gym. It all begins at 9:00am.
The first day of Sunday School will be September 15. Sunday school children and their families are invited to the 9:15am Worship Service. After the Children’s Message, the children leave to attend Sunday school classes until 10:30am. Registration forms will be available next month at church and in The Voice.
Our wonderful monthly fish fries will be back in full swing beginning Friday, September 13. A few things may change but the great food, including deep fried perch and baked cod, will remain. To volunteer, talk with Pastor Greg or Kitchen Greg (Ammerman) or call the church office.
ELDERS GOLF OUTING PLANNED - Add this year's golf outing to your calendar on August 4. The first tee time is scheduled around noon. We will golf 9 holes at The Woods with a picnic lunch and prizes afterwards. Sign up sheets can be found in the Narthex or call or email the
church office (468-4605 or [email protected]). Please list each golfer separately but note if you want to golf together. You pay for the golf and power or pull cart (if used) when you get there. You can also bring a salad, side dish or dessert to share for the picnic. Free-will donations will be accepted for the meat and prizes.

Mallory Biebel, daughter of Scott and Donna, will graduate from Preble High School this year. At college, Mallory plans to major in Funeral Science. While attending school, she will be able to work in her field at Proko‐Wall Funeral Home. Proverbs 31:25 is her favorite Bible verse – “She is clothed in strength and in dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.” Fond memories for Mallory include going to Camp Luther for Confirmation and outdoor summer services when she was little. Tyler Chamberlain, son of John and Wendy, will graduate from Preble High School. He
plans to major in Physics and will be a member of the Rowing Crew at UW‐Madison. Psalm 23:4 is his favorite Bible verse – “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” Tyler remembers cutting the ribbon when the new church building was celebrated and breaking ground for the new section of church. Mallory Geurts, daughter of Marc and Jean, graduate from Preble High School in June. At UW‐Parkside, she intends to major in Sports Management and play soccer as a goal‐keeper for the
Parkside Rangers. Mallory will carry her Confirmation verse with her throughout her life – Matthew 5:16 – “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” She loved going to Sunday school with her sister, Morgan, and always had fun when Randy Peterson would come and play his music.
Michael Hoffman, son of Patrick and Donna, will also graduate from Preble High School this year. His plans include attending Michigan Tech to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. His favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” His favorite memory of Our Saviour is attending the Confirmation Winter Retreat.
Elisebeth Hovland, daughter of Greg and Stephenie, graduated from N.E.W. Lutheran High School on May 25. She will study Early Childhood Education at Concordia University Wisconsin. Her favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 3:5‐6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Having been a member of Our Saviour for only 4 years, her memories include attending the 2010 National Youth Gathering in New Orleans and helping with many of the youth group activities.
Lauren Sipple, daughter of Michael and Jennifer, will graduate from Denmark High School this year. She will attend UW‐La Crosse to pursue a career in either food science or the medical
field. She also hopes to study abroad, possibly somewhere in Europe. Her favorite Bible verse is Ephesians 2:8 – “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift from God.” She also carries with her the Four Free Gifts: He made us, He bought us back at the cross, He walks with us in our story and Heaven is our home. Christmas is her favorite time of year at Our Saviour because of the beautifully decorated Sanctuary; she also enjoys the smiling faces and fellowship shared throughout the congregation. She has great memories of being in the Sunday School Christmas pageant and also the Live Nativity as a Confirmation student.
Kody VanSistine, son of Kurt and Karen, will graduate from Preble High School this year. UW‐Milwaukee is the next stop where he will study marketing. After that, traveling the world to experience other cultures is his goal. His favorite Bible verse is Timothy 4:12 – “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in what you do, in the way you live, in your love, your faith and your purity.” Special memories of Confirmation classes and the stories told by Pastor Dave bring smiles to Kody’s face; he appreciated the way Pastor Dave explained the teachings of God in a personal and relatable way.
