Walking in the Spirit!Gal. 5:16 I say then: Walk in the

Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

Gal. 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

The Bible has a great deal to say about our walk!

▪Walk in the light! (1 Jn. 1:7)

▪Walk in love, light and wisdom! (Eph. 5:2, 8 & 15)

▪Walk by faith, not by sight! (2 Cor. 5:7)

▪Walk in all the ways of the Lord! (Deut. 5:33

▪Walk in good works! (Eph. 3:10)

▪Walk in the Spirit! (Gal. 5:15 & 25)

Walking with God!

▪Gen 5:22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

▪Gen 5:24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

▪Gen 6:9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God

Out of the three persons in the God- head, the Holy Spirit often receives the least

attention!▪The word “Godhead” is only found three times!

▸Act 17:29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

▸Ro 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

▸Col 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

Trinity or Tri-Unity of God!God in three persons!

▪Even though these words are not found, the concept clearly is!

▸1 Jn 5:7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.

▪A proper understanding of this is needed to understand the Bible correctly!

▸Gen. 1:26-27

▸Matt. 3:16-17 & 28:19

▸1 Pet. 1:2

I. Our Relationship to the Spirit is Personal!

▪Even in this room tonight I am sure there are a number of beliefs about the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and what this means for the Christian.

▸I am not going to try to argue you to my side if you disagree with me, but I do desire that our beliefs will continue to bring us back to God’s Word and His teaching on this subject!

▸Rom 3:4 Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar. As it is written ...

The Fact of a Personal Indwelling!▪1Cor 3:16 Do you not know that you are

the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

▪1Cor 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

▪Rom 8:9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

This takes place at the time of our obedience!

▪Act. 5:32 "And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him."

▪Earlier in Act. 2:38 we read of “the gift of the Holy Spirit!” Meaning either a gift the Spirit gives (i.e salvation) or the Spirit as a gift!

▸Example of the Spirit being given as “the gift of God!” (Act. 8:17-20)

▸Eph 5:18 And be not drunken with wine, wherein is riot, but be filled with the Spirit;

II. Our Relationship to the Spirit is Purposeful!

▪The questions is often ask, what is the purpose of this then? Why does the Spirit indwell us?

▪One purpose it to bear witness for us that we are children of God!

▸Rom. 8:15-16 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

Other purposes for this ...▪Eph 1:13 In Him you also trusted, after you

heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

▪Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

▪2 Cor 1:22 who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

▪Gal. 5:16-26 over come the works of the flesh and produce fruit!

III. Our Relationship to the Spirit is Powerful!

▪This can be seen throughout Bible history, and in the early church! The Spirit comes with power! (Act. 1:8 cf. 2:1-4)

▸What about in our day and time?

▸Does the Spirit still do anything for us?

▪Yes!!! He is still actively involved in the lives of God’s children!

▸He intercedes in our prayers! (Rom. 8:26)

▸He gives us strength! (Eph. 3:16-21)

Led/ Guided by the Spirit!(Gal. 5:16-18)

▪The Apostles were promised that when the Holy Spirit came He would lead them into all truth!

▸Jn 16:13 "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”

▪We now have the completed revealed will given by the Spirit! (It has been written down for us!)

▸2 Pet. 1:2-3 cf. Jn. 20:30-31

▸Jude 1:3

▸Eph. 6:17 The Word is the sword of the Spirit!

Conclusion:▪Have you come to believe God and receive

the gift of the Holy Spirit? Have you come to be sealed with the Spirit of God? If not, then why not?

▪If you are a Christian, then have you been using “God’s temple” as you should?

▪Do we fully understand that we are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in us?

▪Gal 5:16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
