L’Observatoire des footballeurs professionnels fête ses cinq pre-mières années d’existence. Notre travail est aujourd’hui largement reconnu, ce qui nous réjouit énormément. Nous sommes très fiers du chemin parcouru depuis 2005. Le duo de départ s’est transformé en un quatuor très complémentaire supporté par un réseau de col-laborateurs fascinés par le projet, toujours prêts à venir en aide en cas de besoin.

Nous sommes désormais bien armés pour grandir encore davan-tage. L’objectif prioritaire demeure de fournir des analyses de la plus haute qualité, visant l’excellence. Dans cette perspective, la conso-lidation des acquis va de pair avec l’innovation. Nous sommes constamment en train de réfléchir à l’élaboration de nouveaux in-dicateurs et à la conception de nouvelles analyses.

Vous découvrez la principale nouveauté récente aux dernières pages de cette publication. Nous avons uni nos forces avec la so-ciété Opta Sports Data pour créer des indicateurs permettant de hiérarchiser clubs et joueurs en fonction de leurs performances sur le terrain. Tous les indicateurs sont positivement corrélés aux résul-tats obtenus par les équipes, ce qui garantit leur objectivité.

La collaboration avec Opta nous permet d’élargir nos domaines de compétence et de rendre ce rapport encore plus attractif. L’accord de coopération conclu avec la société RunningBall laisse aussi en-trevoir des possibilités de développement très prometteuses.

The Professional Football Players Observatory is celebrating its fifth birthday. Today, our work is widely recognized and this is a source of great pleasure to us. We are very proud of how far we have come since 2005. The initial duo has turned into a highly complementary quartet that enjoys support from a network of collaborators with a keen interest in the project and who are al-ways available if the need arises.

Now we are even better equipped grow further. Our primary ob-jective remains to furnish analyses of the highest quality in the quest for excellence. With this perspective in mind, the consoli-dation what has been acquired goes hand in hand with innova-tion. We are constantly thinking of new ways to generate indica-tors and also of the conceptualisation of new analyses.

You will discover the most recent innovation in the last pages of this publication. We have joined forces with Opta Sports Data to create indicators that permit the ranking of clubs and players according to their performances on the pitch. All the indicators are positively correlated with the results obtained by teams, thus guaranteeing their objectivity.

Our collaboration with Opta allows us to broaden our fields of expertise and to render this report even more attractive. The col-laborative agreement reached with RunningBall also opens up horizons for promising new developments.

Thanks to these partnerships, each successive edition of this study will bring fresh innovations. We hope thus to be able to always better fulfil our role in furthering scientific knowledge of European football. We wish you enjoyable read!

There is a difference of more than five years between the players of the oldest club, Milan, and the one fielding of the youngest footballers, Toulouse. The nine clubs that have fielded on aver-age the youngest players are situated in France and Germany. Ten of the eleven oldest teams are located in Italy and England. The German team with the most seasoned players on the pitch, Köln, is only ranked 21st. Barcelona is the youngest national championship winner. The Catalans have played with football-ers aged on average 26.4, two and a half years younger than the oldest champions (Inter and Chelsea).

Plus de cinq ans séparent les joueurs du club le plus âgé, Milan, de l’équipe composée du plus jeune effectif sur le terrain, Toulouse. Les neuf clubs qui ont en moyenne aligné les joueurs les plus jeunes se situent en France et en Allemagne. Dix des onze équipes les plus âgées sont localisées en Italie et en Angleterre. L’équipe allemande la plus âgée, Köln, n’occupe que la 21ème position. Le plus jeune champion national est Barcelona. Les Catalans ont évolué avec des joueurs âgés de 26,4 ans en moyenne, deux ans et demi de moins que ceux des champions les plus âgés (Inter et Chelsea).

The players employed by clubs of the five best European leagues have an average age of 26. There has been no significant change compared to last season. Important differences exist in relation to league and position of the players on the pitch. In Italy, foot-ballers are on average 1.5 years older than in France. Goalkeep-ers are by far the oldest players, followed by defenders, midfield-ers and forwards.

Les joueurs employés par les clubs des cinq meilleures ligues euro-péennes sont âgés de 26 ans en moyenne. Il n’y a pas eu de change-ment significatif par rapport à la saison précédente. D’importantes différences existent en fonction des ligues et du poste occupé par les joueurs sur le terrain. En Italie, les footballeurs ont en moyenne 1,5 ans de plus qu’en France. Les gardiens sont de loin les joueurs les plus âgés, suivis par les défenseurs, les milieux et les attaquants.

With the exception of Inter, the ten teams having fielded the most expatriate players are English and German. No club of these countries figures in the last ten places of the ranking. All the English teams have on average played with at least one-third of footballers having grown up outside of England. In France, ex-patriates have played a majority of minutes in only two teams. Among the 34 clubs where this threshold was exceeded, we find 13 English and 11 German teams. The percentage of min-utes played by expatriates in clubs having won their respective championships varies from 92.2% for Inter to 42.9% for Bayern. Only one other championship winner has fielded a minority of imported players: Barcelona (48.7%).

A l’exception de l’Inter, les dix équipes ayant aligné le plus de foot-balleurs expatriés sont anglaises et allemandes. Aucun club de ces pays ne figure aux dix derniers rangs de ce classement. Toutes les équipes anglaises ont en moyenne évolué avec au moins un tiers de joueurs n’ayant pas grandi en Angleterre. En France, les expatriés ont disputé une majorité de minutes seulement au sein de deux équipes. Parmi les 34 clubs où ce seuil a été dépassé, on trouve 13 équipes anglaises et 11 allemandes. Le pourcentage de minutes jouées par les expatriés dans les clubs ayant gagné leurs champion-nats respectifs va de 92,2% pour l’Inter à 42,9% pour le Bayern. Un seul autre champion national a en moyenne aligné une minorité de joueurs importés : Barcelona (48,7%).

The percentage of expatriate players has remained the same in comparison to last season. A slight increase has, however, been observed regarding their presence on the pitch (43.9% of min-utes played). Since 2005, the proportion of expatriate players has risen everywhere except in France. The biggest increase has been recorded in Italy (+11.6%). Between 2008/09 and 2009/10, the percentage of this category of footballers has grown in Ita-ly, France and England, while it has decreased in Germany and Spain. Almost two-thirds of footballers playing in the top Euro-pean clubs arrived in the country of the club for which they play due to migration directly linked to football. This percentage di-minishes as the level of clubs decreases.

Le pourcentage de joueurs expatriés est resté le même par rapport à la saison passée. Une légère augmentation a par contre été mesurée au niveau de leur présence sur le terrain (43,9% des minutes dispu-tées). Depuis 2005, la proportion de joueurs expatriés a augmenté partout sauf en France. L’accroissement le plus marqué a été enre-gistré en Italie (+11,6%). Entre 2008/09 et 2009/10, le pourcentage de cette catégorie de footballeurs s’est accru en Italie, en France et en Angleterre, tandis qu’il a diminué en Allemagne et en Espagne. Presque deux tiers des joueurs évoluant dans les meilleurs clubs eu-ropéens sont arrivés dans le pays de l’équipe pour laquelle ils jouent dans le cadre d’une migration directement liée au football. Ce pour-centage diminue au fur et à mesure que le niveau des clubs baisse.

SquAd COMpOSITION & RESulTS

It is relatively easy to predict results for the Premier League by an-alyzing squad composition. One of the most strongly correlated criteria to the number of points per match obtained by teams is the average number of international games played by footballers on the pitch. The average number of new signings fielded, the percentage of minutes played by club-trained footballers, the number of matches in the big 5 leagues and, to a lesser extent, in the Premier League, are also correlated to results. The strongest correlations were measured for the 13th (% of club-trained) up to 20th (number of new transfers) most fielded players.

Il est relativement facile de prévoir les résultats en Premier League en analysant la composition des effectifs. Un des critères les plus fortement corrélés au nombre de points par match réalisés par les équipes est le nombre moyen de rencontres internationales dispu-tées par les joueurs sur le terrain. Le nombre moyen de nouvelles re-crues alignées, le pourcentage de minutes disputées par les joueurs formés dans le club, le nombre de matchs dans les cinq grandes ligues et, dans une moindre mesure, en Premier League, sont aussi corrélés aux résultats. Les plus fortes corrélations ont été mesurées à l’échelle des 13 (% de formés dans le club) jusqu’aux 20 (nombre de nouveaux transferts) joueurs les plus employés.

This section presents a selection of demographic indicators signifi-cantly correlated to the results obtained by clubs in their respective championships. For each indicator, we present the correlation be-tween the value weighted by the minutes played by footballers over the season and the average number of points per game ob-tained by teams. The graphic below of the scatter plot illustrates the evolution of the coefficient of determination (R2) from the most employed player to the values aggregated for the 20 most fielded ones.

Cette section présente une sélection d’indicateurs démographiques si-gnificativement corrélés aux résultats obtenus par les équipes dans leurs championnats respectifs. Pour chaque indicateur, nous présentons la corrélation entre la valeur pondérée par les minutes disputées par les joueurs sur l’arc de la saison et le nombre moyen de points par match réalisés par les équipes. Le graphique en dessous du nuage de points illustre l’évolution du coefficient de détermination (R2) à partir du joueur le plus employé jusqu’aux valeurs agrégées à l’échelle des 20 foot-balleurs les plus utilisés.

Cette section présente des indices qui classent les joueurs des cinq grandes ligues européennes sur la base de leurs performances sur le terrain. Agrégés à l’échelle des équipes, tous les indices sont positi-vement corrélés aux résultats (voir tableau). Cette démarche permet d’identifier de manière objective les joueurs les plus performants dans des domaines de jeu ayant un impact décisif sur les résultats.

Cinq domaines ont été identifiés : la finition (tirs et tentatives), la mise en danger (dernière passe), la percussion (dribbles et fautes subies), la distribution (passes) et la récupération (interceptions et tacles). En additionnant les valeurs des joueurs pour chaque indice, nous obtenons un indice général mettant en exergue les footbal-leurs dont les performances ont dans l’absolu le plus fort impact sur les résultats.

Les pages suivantes présentent des classements hiérarchisant les joueurs et les clubs par ligue et par indice. Ces données ne consti-tuent qu’un petit échantillon de ce qu’il est désormais possible de mesurer. Dans une optique de recrutements, nos indices permettent de mettre en exergue les meilleurs joueurs, non seulement au sein des clubs les plus forts, mais aussi dans les équipes moins en vue. Il devient ainsi possible d’identifier objectivement les footballeurs avec le plus grand potentiel de développement.

This section presents indicators that rank the players of the big 5 European leagues on the basis of their performance on the pitch. All of the indicators aggregated on a team level are posi-tively correlated to results (see table). This approach allows the objective identification of the highest performing players in are-as of the game that statistically have a decisive impact on results.

Five areas have been identified: open play shot (attempts on goal excluding set plays), chance creation (assists and key passes), take on (dribbles and fouls received), distribution (passes) and re-covery (interceptions and tackles). By adding the players’ values for each indicator, we obtain a general index highlighting foot-ballers whose performance, in absolute terms, has the biggest impact on results.

The following pages present the rankings for players and clubs by league and indicator. The data represent only a small sam-ple of what it is now possible to measure. With a view to player scouting and recruitment, our indicators make possible the identification of the best players performing not only in Europe’s top teams, but also those less recognised. We can for the first time objectively identify the players statistically showing the greatest potential.
