Whether you are new to the game of basketball or have played it before, learning the duties and responsibilities of all of the basketball positions will help you enjoy watching or playing the game more. The positions in classic 5 on 5 basketball are: the point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and the center.

Point Guard: -One of the most important players on a basketball team.-Referred to as the “1” or “One” guard.-In charge of bringing the ball up the court and running a team’s offense-The “Floor General”-Should be a good ball handler, quick, and able to run plays with minimal direction from the coach.

Shooting Guard: -Typically the best shooter on the team.-Also known as the “2” or “Two” Guard.-Should have range out to the 3 point shot.-Capable of filling in for the point guard if required and possess above average quickness.

Small Forward:-Commonly referred to as the “3,” “Three,” or “Wing.”-Able to play inside the paint or on the wing. -One of the most capable defenders on a team.-Sometimes used as a “Point Forward” in the NBA or some college teams.-Should be a strong defensive player.

Power Forward:-Referred to as the “4” or “Four” position.-Should be one of the strongest post players of all of the basketball positions.-European power forwards will shoot more 3 point shots than American power forwards.-May sometimes be the tallest player on the team.

Center:-Normally the tallest player on a team.-Responsible for defending the post and should be a team’s best shot blocker.-Known for inside scoring and rebounding.-Commonly used to set screens for guards and in Pick and Roll moves.
