The season starts in early March and runs through spring, summer, fall, and culminates in December with the MLS Cup.
The MLS Cup playoffs start in November, and run into December. The MLS Cup is played in early December.
Season
There are currently 19 teams in MLS, broken up into a Western Conference (10 teams) and an Eastern Conference (9 teams).
However, continued expansion. New teams announced in New York (NYCFC), LA (LAFC), and Orlando City SC was admitted into MLS. Atlanta also being looked at for expansion.
Teams
Top 5 teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs.
The 4th and 5th seeds play a “wildcard” game immediately after the season ends, the winner plays the #1 seed.
The 3rd and 4th seeds play each other, these games are the conference semifinals, 2 legs, home and away.
The winners of these games advance to the conference finals, again 2 legs.
The winners of each conference advance to the MLS Cup Final, played at the home of the higher seed.
