Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04

The fish of these shoreline grounds, due maybe to the greater large quantity of food right here, arethought to be distinctly superior in top quality to those of the same types taken on the offshorebanks. The cod and the haddock, especially, of the Gulf of Maine are particularly well conditionedfish and are noted for their excellence.

The statistics presented in Desk 2 show only a fraction of the catch from the Inner Grounds, sincethey deal completely with the fares of fishing vessels of 5 net lots and over. There are literallythousands of the so-called "certified" or "under-tonned" boats, mostly gill-netters, that take anincredible number of pounds from these waters annually, principally cod and haddock.

About the Maine coast and across the line in New Brunswick there are other than 300 weirs whichfurnished to American canners and smokers during the year 1923 (whose figures have been chosenas representing an average season) 77,000,000 kilos of herring. In the coast of Massachusetts thereare 50 or more weirs and fish traps, and from your Isle of Shoals to Pemaquid Reason for Mainethere are more than 50 floating traps in the various bays, on the points of offshore islands, orperhaps the open seas, and all these go on a rich harvest readily available waters. , there is thelobster fishery, more important from the Gulf of Maine than anywhere else in the states.too andThen

Of these various branches of the fisheries industries number of statistics are available, however wemay say that the figures of the 1919 census showed that the "under-ton" boats mentioned landed5,324,426 weight of fish on the port of Boston, mostly of haddock and cod, and that the same type ofcraft in 1923 landed at Portland, Me., more than 3,000,000 pounds, primarily of ground fish. We alsoknow that each hamlet, island, village and town and city along this nearly 4,000 'miles of coast linetakes its toll in the sea.

Lukes Rock. This rock is situated S. by E. 3 miles from Moosabec Light, rounded in shape, and about1 mile in size. Depths are from 25 to 35 fathoms; the bottom isgravel and rocks, and mud. There issome vessel fishing, though this is certainly mainly a small-boat minn kota endura terrain. Hake areused here from June to September, inclusive; cod are present concerning the rocks the year allaround. Pollock are in fall and spring season, and haddock from December to Feb ., inclusive. MinnKota Endura is as simple as hand and trawl line.

Newfound Ground. A small rocky location about 1/4 mile across with an automatic buoy in the centerfor guidance into the Bay of Fundy. This really is a small-boat ground having depths averaging 18fathoms. It lies about 3 miles S. by W. from Moosabec Light. Species and seasons are as on LukesRock. Minn Kota Endura is actually by trawl and hands line.

Henrys Rock and roll. Five miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light. 1/4 distance in diameter, and 30fathoms spanning a level bottom. Minn Kota Endura is done by hand trawl and line. Cod are presentthe year close to, a few haddock in the fall, hake during the summer time but not in the tumble, andpollock in spring and drop.

Handspike Ground. Seven miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light, nearly circular in form, and ? mileacross. It comes with a bottom of depths and rocks of from 35 to 40 fathoms. months and Speciesare identical as on Lukes Rock, but mostly cod and pollock are taken on this page by trawl and handline.

European Egg Rock. This really is SW. from Moosabec Light, 8 miles distant, lying within a NE. andSW. direction, 3 miles long by 1 mile wide. The bottom isirregular and sharp, and difficult and has25 to 30 fathoms. Minn Kota Endura here is mostly manually line, the ground getting said to be toohard for trawling. This can be a small-boat ground, and sportfishing is done mainly in thesummertime season. Cod and pollock are consumed in thespring and summer, and fall; haddock canbe found in spring and fall; and cusk in 35 to 40 fathoms in spring and slip. This is not a hakeground.

Old Ovum Rock. This rock and roll is WSW. from Moosabec Light, 6 miles distant, and running in aNE. and SW. course. It is 3 mls long by 1 mile wide; features a rocky depths and bottom of 25 to 30fathoms. This is also a small-boat ground, where minn kota endura is done mainly by hand lines, buttrawls also are employed. This ground is fished by the greater vessels in the tumble months whenthe weather is too rough for fishing on the outside reasons. , and a few pollock are taken in fall andspring; hake in fair number from the fall months.haddock and Cod

Midst Ridge This is W. by S. from Moosabec Light 3 miles. It lies in a NE. and SW. direction and isabout 1 distance long by ? mile wide. The depths are from 18 to 25 fathoms and the bottom is rockyand rough. It is a small-fishing boat ground mostly as well as little importance being a fishingground. Cod are present the year close to haddock in late spring and summer with a smaller numberin the fall. Cusk are here the season around. A few pollock are here in the spring and fall.

Broken Ground. This lies S by E from Moosabec light, 15 miles, whence the ground stretches WSWto inside 4 miles of Mount Desert Rock with an average thickness of 1 distance. The depths operatefrom 15 to 100 fathoms. The shallows are difficult and sharp; the deeps, gravel and clay. There areplaces ? distance long and others 3 miles long experiencing depths of 70 fathoms. Several of theseareas have special labels: Crawley's Rocks, Puzzling Rock, The Ridges. The grounds pointed out hereand those above mentioned are known to the fishermen as the Moosabec Ridges. All these seem tobe minn kota endura spots cropping out upon the 50 fathom curve. In the Broken Ground the fishingseason is from June 1 by means of September. Herring normally are abundant here from May toSeptember. Cod are taken outside of the reasons in spring and fall. Pollock and small cod are takenon the shoals in summer and fall, and hake on the mud underside in fall and summer and hake onthe mud base in summer and fall.

Tibbetts' Ledge. This lies eastern from Petit Manan 4 or 5 miles. The marks are Schoodic Island overEco-friendly Island of Petit Manan and the Ladle over Nash's Isle. This ledge contains two rocky

Page 3: Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04

shoals with depths of 3 to 3? fathoms, about one acre apiece in extent and 1/4 mile apart lying SEand NW from the other. To the westward of those is broken floor nearly to Petit Manan. These arefavored small-vessel grounds. The eastern ledge drops suddenly into the mud. In May large cod arecaught across the muddy bottom just E of the ledge in 27 to 30 fathoms. Hake and haddock aretaken in late early spring (May) and drop. Fishing is by hands trawl and line.

Ben's Ground. Lies ESE from Petit Manan 4 or 5 a long way. The marks are Petit Manan Gentle tonorthward of Middle Hill of Mount Desert and Humpback Mountain about the west side of Trafton'sIsland or Pond Island Gentle to the eastward of Jordan's Delight. The ground is circular fit andhealthy, about 3/4 mile all over, having 14 to 30 fathoms water. The bottom is of rocks and mud. Thisground is of little relevance except as a modest-boat floor in summer for cod and haddock. Hake areadopted the muddy underside near it, It is a winter haddock floor in calm weather, these fish makingit in the storms, the water being relatively too shallow to enable them to "ride out a blow" incomfort, Such at least is the purpose the fishermen give for the sudden cessation of their taking onshoal grounds after a period of heavy weather.

Southeast Rock. This is a ledge, nearly uncovered at low tide on its shoalest place, SSE from Petit 4and Manan? miles distant, The shoal portions slope toward the NE a distance of 4 miles around anirregular base, Depths vary from 17 to 30 fathoms, The shoals are rocky, and the deeps are muddy, haddock and Cod are undertaken here in May and June, hake from July to September, This is a goodlobster soil, also, Minn Kota Endura the following is by handline and trawl operated from vessels andmodest boats from in close proximity to-by Maine ports.

Broken Ridges aka Joe Roy Ground. This is situated SSE from Petit Manan 7 miles to the center. It isactually 2 miles lengthy SW and NE and one mile vast and from 27 to 33 fathoms, and the bottom ofsoil and rocks is incredibly uneven, The shoalest portion is near the center. It is said to become agood cod and haddock ground, which is mainly a small motorboat ground, although some vesselfishing is maintained here in the spring.

Black Ledges Ground. This soil lies between Jordan's Delight and the Halibut Ledges, or Blackcolored Ledges. It is a excellent haddock. Fire can easily spread rapidly

on a boat, even about water.

In general it is a small-boat soil on which chieflyhand lines and trawls are operated, A number of cod and cusk are taken within the fall, in fact it is agood lobster soil.

Bakers Island Ridge. This is a narrow ledge making out from Bakers Island E, by N. The eastern partbears S. by E. from Schoodic Island 3/4 distance distant The ridge is much broken, its average widthbeing ? mile, and it has depths of from 20 to 25 fathoms over a rocky and gravelly bottom. It is notnecessarily much fished around the shoaler spots, nevertheless in 30 to 35 fathoms, on a muddybottom, hake are abundant from July to October, inclusive. Cod and cusk are normally found here inthe tumble and spring; haddock from October to January, inclusive. Minn Kota Endura here is doneby small boats and little vessels mainly from Bass Harbor and Southwest Harbor by trawl and palmline. It is a very good lobster ground.

It has an abnormal bottom, with depths from 9 to 15 fathoms. This ridge, with Martins and Seaveys Reasons, divides the traditional western or Bakers Tropical islemud channel from Schoodic mud channel. Both these were previously considered very good hakegrounds but, although still good, are not as profitable for hake fishing as in past years. Haddock aretaken on the ridge in the spring as well as inOctober and December, and December. A number of

cod are consumed the fall and spring. Minn Kota Endura is as simple as trawl and hands line. It is avery good lobster ground.

Interior Schoodic Ridge. This ridge bears SE. by S. from Bakers Island, the center distant 12 miles. This terrain is nearly circular in form, about 4 miles in size, and has depths operating from 18 to 60fathoms. The base is ofrocks and gravel, and mud; the shoaler portions are difficult and sharp.Vessels from Maine plug-ins use this ground, minn kota endura by hand line and trawl. haddock andCod are ample here in spring and fall, and hake fishing is good throughout the summer. It is a greatlobster ground.

External Schoodic Ridge. The northwest part of this floor bears SE. from Bakers Island, throughwhich it is distant 22 miles. It is situated 7 miles outside Inner Schoodic, has always been consideredone of the best shore fishing grounds of your Maine coast, yet still seems to deserve the reputation. The ridge is about 8 miles long in a NE. and SW. path, lying nearly parallel with the adjacent coast. Its greatest breadth is 6 mls. The bottom is cracked and irregular minn kota parts and possessesdepths from 22 to 80 fathoms over gravel and rocks on the shoaler mud and components on thedeeps. Primarily Maine vessels fish this ground, utilizing hand line and trawl. pollock, haddock, Codand cusk and hake are present here from June to December, and a few large halibut, up to 300pounds in weight, are taken here in July and June.

Position Desert Outer Ridge. This ridge lies SE. by E. from the Big Mountain of Mount Desert Island. From Schoodic Island to the middle of this ground is about 25 miles. Its length E. by N. and W. by S,is 2 miles; its breadth 3/4 mile. Depths are from 45 to 60 fathoms; the shoals are rocky, but on theaspects sand and clay predominate. This is a comparatively little ground, but it furnishes good codminn kota endura in the spring (April to July) and tumble. Cusk are taken in the spring and fall.Virtually no haddock are taken in this article. Hake are in the deep water around the W. and SW.insummertime and spring, and fall; trawl outlines principally are used on this page. It is a goodlobster ground but is way too distant for provide minn kota endura methods.

Flat Ground. This floor lies between Attach Desert and Swan Island, SW. from Long Island. In 50fathoms, with a hard mud bottom part, there is good fishing for hake in the summertime. Fishing isby palm trawl and series.

Enoch's Shoal. This shoal lies ENE. 3 miles from Great Duck Tropical isle. This is a small hummockon the outer aspects of a ridge stretching out out to it from Great Duck tropical island. It has asharp, difficult bottom with depths of about 18 fathoms. Hand lining and trawling are theapproaches employed to take several cod in early spring; haddock are in small numbers in thesummer as well as a small quantity of hake. It is a great lobster ground.

Financial institutions Ground. The heart bears SE. by S. from Great Duck Island, distant about 5 mls.It is about 1? miles long in a NE. and SW. direction by 1/4 distance wide and has a mud bottom withdepths from 35 to 50 fathoms. It is mainly a little-boat floor, fished mostly during the summer time, when hake are fairly abundant and there are a few haddock and cod. It is a lobster ground, also.

Casing Ground. This is SE. from Long island Head, from where the center of the ground is distant 6a long way. It is 2 mls long, in a NE. and SW. route and about ? mile broad. In the middle portion isactually a shoal of 25 fathoms, its underside sharp rocks. On all sides of this shoal the bottom isquite irregular, consisting of pebbles and mud. The greatest depth, near the edge of the financialinstitution, is 50 fathoms. It is actually mainly a hake fishing ground for small boats plus anoccasional larger craft, all using hands line and trawl, even though Cod and haddock, together witha couple of cusk and pollock, are taken in June, July, and August and even to the late fall. It really is

Page 6: Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04

a good lobster ground.

Abner Ground. This ground is SSE. from Gott's Tropical isle, distant 8 miles. It extends 1? miles in aNE. and SW. direction and is about 1/4 distance wide. The bottom is damaged, mud and rocks, withdepths of from 25 to 50 fathoms. This can be principally a haddock ground, the best year being inJuly and August, and is resorted to mostly by small craft.

Grumpy. Extends from SE. 4? miles from Eastern Earof Isle au Haute to SE. 1/4 E. from the western headof Isle au Haute, distant 7 miles. This soil is 2? mlslong by 3/4 distance wide and has a tiny shoal of 14fathoms on the northeast part. Over the rest of theground the average depths run from 35 to 40 fathomsover a gravelly bottom. Though not of greatimportance of later years, this was earlier consideredone of the best inshore grounds for cod for the entireyear as well as for haddock in winter. Hake usuallyare plentiful just off the southeast edge in summertime. This bank is usually fished by craft fromports of eastern Maine--small watercraft as a rule--and the principal technique is by trawling, whilethere is considerable hand-lining for cod in 25 fathoms in June and July. Spots: Big CamdenMountain over the Eastern Ear canal of Isle au Haute; Fog Island in Jericho Bay, touching on theeastern part of Big Place Island; Brimstone among Isle au Haute and the Western Ears.

Hatchell Ground. This ground lies SE. by E 3/4 E. 9? miles through the western head of Isle auHaute. Marks are eastern Mount Desert Hillside in the Middle Saddle of Long island, and LittleSpoon Isle in the great or center Saddle of Isle au Haute.

Spots: Brimstone Island out by thewestern go of Isle au Haute and Blue Hill on the to the west side of Marshall Island. These spots leadto a depth of 25 fathoms in the northeast part of the floor, deepening southwest to 40 fathoms in 1mile through the shoaler part, that is about ? mile large, part of the ground, deepening southwest to40 fathoms in 1 mile from the shoaler part, which is about ? mile wide. This is an excellent groundfor cod in the fall and spring but is right for haddock during the overall winter. Hand lines and trawlare being used.

Inner Horse Reef. This reef is placed SE. ? E 1? miles from the eastern ear of isle au Haute. Thereexists a shoal here of 25 fathoms about 1/8 mile in size. From this the water gradually deepens toNE. for ? mile, where it drops off into the mud. Depths on this northeast portion are about 35fathoms. The bottom is of gravel and pebbles. In slip and spring this is a good cod ground. Hake arefound close to the advantage in summer. Fishing is by small craft, generally, using trawl andhandline. This is a good lobster terrain. Marks: Bring Blue Hill Mountain from the saddle of WhiteHorse; Brimstone exhibiting between Western Isle and Ear au Haute.

Outer Horse Reef. This is a brief distance SW. from the Inner Reef, with only a narrow gullybetween. The small shoal falls off speedily on all sides. It has a depths of 30 fathoms. Over a room1/4 mile in diameter the bottom is gravelly. Seasons and kinds are as on Inner Horse Reef.

Hake Ground. The first title because of the abundance of hake taken here during June, July, and

Page 7: Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04

August, north of Monhegan isle lies a patch called the Hake Ground or Mud Funnel. It extends fromjust outside White Head to abreast of Monhegan Island on the upper side. The depths vary from 20to 45 fathoms, and also the ground is still considered one of the best hake grounds alongshore. It isfished by small vessels and boats if the dogfish are on the outer grounds. This is a good haddockground in December and Jan, as well as a good lobster ground.

Barley Hill Ground. This ground lies NNE. from Seal Island and SSW through the western head ofIsle au Haute directly in range between the two, about 3? miles distant from each point. It is circularin form, has 28 to 30 fathoms of water, and the bottom is mixed stones and mud. This can be aground much resorted to by sloops and larger vessels, and the minn kota endura is by hand line andtrawls. It is a excellent cod ground in spring and slip and a hake soil on the mud and rocks insummer. Occasionally a few halibut are taken right here during June and July. It is also a lobsterground.

Gilkey Ground. This bears S. from the western head of Isle au Haute. 4 miles distant. It extendsENE. and WSW about 1? miles long by 1/3 mile wide. The bottom is rocky about the shoals wheredepths are about 23 fathoms sloping to 35 fathoms in the southwest part., in which the bottom isgravelly and comparatively easy.

The bottom is of razor-sharprocks and is shattered in places. Rock cod area within fair numbers in spring and tumble, and this isa mackerel and herring terrain in their seasons. Haddock are abundant in the fall close into therocks of Close Island in 6 to 15 fathoms. There are several cusk to be had right here on the deepercomponents and an occasional modest halibut is taken in the kelp on the shoal in June and July, eventhough this is not a hake ground. It is a great lobster ground.

Pea gravel Southeast and Bottom part Ground. These rest S. of Close Island. forming a substantialpiece of fairly stage ground extensive part of fairly level ground. The western that bears a little E. ofS. along with the eastern part about ESE. from the isle. It is about 5 or 10 kilometers in diameter. While this is really but one bit of ground, the eastern part is called the Southeast Ground along withthe western part, from the nature of its base.

The Gravel Base. The eastern segment is muddy and possesses 40 to 60 fathoms. The traditionalwestern has 35 to 40 fathoms. It is a good cod ground in spring and winter. Haddock are presentfrom November to March, inclusive; hake in summer. By trawling by sloops and vessels, Minn KotaEndura is done mainly.

Laisdells Ground. This is a tiny, rocky spot away from Brandy Ledges. It really is about 1/4 acre inextent and has a sharp rocky bottom part with 20 fathoms of water over it. It is the best cod andhaddock ground in Isle au Haute Bay. This really is chiefly a small vessel ground and is also a lobsterground.

Saddleback Reef. This reef lies S. from Saddle-again Ledge, 3/4 mile remote. It is about 2/3 mileextended N and S by 1/4 mile vast. Depths are from 15 to 35 fathoms over a broken and rocky

Page 8: Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04

Otter Tropical island Reef; Snipper Shin; Western Reef. These are generally names applied todifferent sections of an irregular, broken piece of difficult ground about midway between Vinalhavenand Seal Island. Otter Island Reef may be the eastern section, lying 4 miles W. by S. by 1/4 S. fromthe western head of Isle au Haute. Depths here are from 10 to 25 fathoms over a rocky bottom part. The trawl, earlier not much used in this article, is now in general use. This is a haddock and codground at seasons when these fish are in shoal water, but it is ideal for cod in winter and spring andfor haddock in the fall, from November 1 to January 1.

Old Ripper. This is placed S. from the Traditional western Ground (Western Reef) and 10 a long wayWSW. from Criehaven or Ragged Isle. Apparently this is a part of the Western Ground. About thedeep-normal water mud bottom in between these (Ripper and Western Reef) is useful hake minnkota endura in summer, and cusk are abundant from May to the time when the dogfish hit theground, usually about July 5 to 10.

Crie Ridges. These lie 4 miles NW. from Matinicus Rock and roll, 4 miles WSW. from Criehaven orRagged Island, and run SE. from Western Ground toward Matinicus, distant 4? to 5 mls. Cod,pollock, and cusk are on this page in the spring, and haddock are abundant within the fall.

Bald Ridges. These begin just outside Wooden Soccer ball Island and operate off in a nearly directline for Matinicus Rock. These are each from 1/4 to ? mile wide, are quite close together, thedistances between them becoming not over ? distance, and they are almost parallel with each other.Soundings demonstrate from 15 to 30 fathoms with them, with a damaged, rocky bottom. Theshoalest water is approximately 1 mile from Wooden Ball Tropical isle, the depth improving towardthe the southern part of end.

Henry Marshalls Ground. This terrain lies S. by W. from Matinicus Rock about 3 miles; its area isabout 2 acres. The shoaler segment has a depth of 35 fathoms along with a gravelly bottom; aroundthe edge the level is 45 fathoms and the bottom is of mud and rocks. Cod are taken here in thespring, haddock in January and February, and hake in the summer a few months. It is a good lobsterground.

The Bounties (The Bowdies). This ground bears SE. by S ? S distant 6 mls from Wooden Tennis ballIsland. It is practically circular in kind, about 4 miles across, and has depths from 40 to 60 fathoms. The bottom, of gravel and rocks, is somewhat broken. It is a good cod and cusk ground in fall andspring and a haddock ground in winter and is fished by vessels and sloops, mostly by trawlingthough with a certain amount of hand liner, in June and could. A summer hake ground extends from3 miles ESE. of Seal Tropical island to 4 a long way SSE of the Wood Ball, thus it is all about 7? milesvery long by some 2? miles wide. The depths here are from 35 to 60 fathoms.

Summer Hake Ground. A summertime hake ground expands from 8 miles SE. of the eastern Ear ofIsle au Haute to 3 miles SE. of Long Isle in 35 to 60 fathoms with a bottom of difficult mud. Thiscomponent of ground is about 15 miles long by 4 miles large.
