It won’t be long before the Madness is back. College basket- ball’s regular season is winding down, but there’s still plenty to be decided before hoops crazies fully submerge into March Madness. It’s clear that Oklahoma, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Connecticut are contending for No.1 seeds. But there are plenty of other teams that could make serious runs, while some squads will likely fall short of preseason expectations. As for the Cinderellas? Well, that’s part of what makes March so magical. Who knows? Report, 4D SURPRISE, Ariz. — When the Texas Rangers hired long-shot candidate Ron Washington to be their manager in Novem- ber 2006, one of the primary reasons was that owner Tom Hicks and general manager Jon Daniels felt he would be a “players’ manager.” That doesn’t mean they wanted him to allow the in- mates to run the asylum. What they hoped he could do was change the culture in an up- tight and tense Texas club- house after four years of Buck Showalter micro-managing. If that was the first mission in a two-part plan toward building a winning culture, consider the Rangers halfway there. The idea is that a relaxed, family atmosphere in the clubhouse should translate into a relaxed, cohesive team on the field, one that, with the right talent, can compete for championships for years to come. The irony is that Washing- ton, who has done exactly what the Rangers have asked, will enter the 2009 season managing without a net. The Rangers have an option on his contract for 2010. There is no buyout clause. Whether it’s the economy or something else holding them back, there’s just something wrong about that picture. The UIL steroid testing program is likely to be scaled backafter a second round of test results announced Fridayshowed seven positives out of nearly 19,000 students tested,about three-hundreths of one percent.
