Bicycle safety is everyone’s responsibility, no matter where your community is on the “road” to safer streets.

Davis, CA is known as “The Bicycle Capital of America”, the first city in the U.S. to experiment with and implement the bike lane.

From 2000-2010, bicycle commuting in the U.S. as a whole was up by 40%, while in Missouri bicycle commuting is growing at more than four times that rate.

Bicyclists have the same rules, rights and responsibilities as other drivers.

Anyone riding between sunset and sunrise may ride on the sidewalk for safety if they don’t have bicycle lights and reflective clothing.

Bicyclists are required by law to ride the shoulder of the road when available. F

On a narrow-laned road, a bicyclist may move to the center of the lane to discourage motorist from squeezing past in the lane. T

Missouri State Law 307.190. Riding to right, required for bicycles and motorized bicycles.Every person operating a bicycle or motorized bicycle at less than the posted speed or slower than the flow of traffic upon a street or highway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as safe, exercising due care when passing a standing vehicle or one proceeding in the same direction, except when making a left turn, when avoiding hazardous conditions, when the lane is too narrow to share with another vehicle or when on a one-way street. Bicyclists may ride abreast when not impeding other vehicles

How to pass a cyclist

• Gauge the speed of the cyclist.• On a two-lane road, wait until there is a broken

yellow line or you have a clear line of site to on-coming traffic.

• Move completely into the passing lane (or allow at least three feet of space between your mirror and the cyclist).

• Accelerate.• When you are more than 20 yds ahead of the cyclist,

return to the lane.
