Why Sailing at the Gay Games?

•The inclusion of Sailing in the 2002 Gay Games changed the image of LGBT sailing around the world•Many new teams formed•Publicity for the event in mainstream and sailing media•New organisation formed – GLORY•Very popular new event

Sailing at the Gay Games 2010

•Cologne has few nearby sailing areas and none with suitable boats•The Rhine goes right through the city but is very fast flowing so not suitable•Christoph Gaspers (GLORY rep) searched for suitable locations and developed proposal for Games-Cologne submission•Sailing was added to the programme as a result of his effort

Categories and Divisions

•180 Participants (3 people per boat/60 Teams) •Advanced division

– for those with competitive Regatta/Sailing experience)

•Beginners division – for recreational sailors); – the Sailing Organizing Committee reserves the right after

the training day, to classify and categorize sailors as they see fit.

•In the preliminary rounds, three rounds will be raced. The 10 best of each division will move on to the final of three rounds.

Sailing - Logistics

•The Maas Lakes is 90 km from the city centre of Cologne (approx 1hr by road).•Shuttle buses will travel (3 times per day) from the city centre of Cologne to the Regatta (€10 return for participants- €20 return for spectators)•Life vests will be available for use.•Catering provided by the Dutch Sailing School (restaurants nearby)•Changing/toilet facilities provided•Secure storage

•Valk boats, without spinnakers, will be used in racing, each being crewed by a team of three.•Valk has been used for EuroGay Cup and is an ISAF registered class•PolyValk is a polyurethane derivative of the original wooden boat used for rental market•Open cockpit design with Gaf rig and mast hinged at the foredeck (to get under low bridges on canals!)

•No spinnaker•Hard chine•Virtually flat bottom•Roller-reef jib•Slab-reef main

•Tips–Gaff rig (must create 2:1 rope knot to increase tension)–No tell-tales (take your own & stick them on)–May not have toe-straps (use jibsheet & shroud for hiking)–Can be roll-tacked (but you can’t go outside shrouds)–Take shackle key for rigging repair–Adjust jib block position for wind

Roll Tacking

•If the wind is light you need to be able to roll tack.•Roll tacking uses movable ballast (the crew!) to assist the boat in tacking•You can roll-tack a Valk although you’re not allowed to hang off the shrouds outside the boat.
