2 Introduction

Well actually, we are not going to bet…instead we are going to trade! You will need to have an account with a betting exchange provider

For this tutorial I will make use of Betfair – they are the biggest and most popular player on the market. Never used Betfair before? You can find everything you need to know in their extensive help section with nice video tutorials and stuff. Okay now, back to this guide… Trading on tennis is all about spotting the right opportunity. And when you find one, all you have to do is open and close your trade and collect your money…it’s fun, easy and profitable! Because I live in Belgium, all examples and screenshots are showing EUR/€…but obviously my methods will work just the same way in any other currency. This guide contains step-by-step instructions, screenshots and real-life examples, so it doesn’t matter if your betting experience level is beginner, advanced or professional. With all of the above in mind, let’s get started!

3 Betfair in a nutshell On a betting exchange like Betfair, you have 3 possible options: 1. Backing You can back a selection if you think it will win. To do this you click on the odds in the blue box and then enter the amount you wish to bet. 2. Laying You can lay a selection if you think it will NOT win. To do this you click on the odds in the pink box and then enter the amount you wish to bet. 3. Trading This is just a combination of the previous 2 options. The main idea is pretty simple: Back a selection first at high odds and then lay it later at lower odds. Lay a selection first at low odds and then back it later at higher odds. In both situations you will make a guaranteed profit, no matter if your selection wins or loses. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, don’t worry. All this will become obvious once you see me doing it later on in this tutorial. And remember…there is always the Betfair help section with video tutorials to get you started: http://chompin.esy.es/betfair

4 Betfair account configuration This configuration setup will allow you to see the Profit/Loss position of your bets in real-time. You only have to do this once.

Then open any of the tennis betting markets of your choice… Above the “Refresh” button you can see an “Options” link. Click it and the following window will pop up:

Now tick all the boxes exactly the same way I did and then click the “Save” button.

This way Betfair will calculate your Profit/Loss position in real-time for you.

Green amounts will represent your profits and red amounts will represent your losses.

Your Profit/Loss position will change with every additional back or lay bet you make.

5 Looking for trading opportunities Before you can open your trades, you will have to find the right tennis games first. To do this you open the following website: www.xscores.com On the home page, you will find the link to the tennis section: At the top of the next page, you click on “Live Games” which will bring you to this page: As you can see, most of the games have just started and are still showing very close scores.

Page 6: Tennis Trader

6 What you should be looking for is games where 1 of the players is showing a comfortable lead in the current set being played. From the above 12 games, only 3 fit in… Can you find them? These are the only 3 games we will investigate further on:

1. Dementieva / Tu (4-0 in the 2nd set) 2. Dulko / Schruff (3-0 in the 1st set) 3. Bartoli / Silva (3-0 in the 1st set)

Okay, now that we have found our trading opportunities we will head over to the Betfair website to have a look at the betting markets…

NOTE: An important factor when trading is the Betfair liquidity. This is the amount of money that already has been traded on an event so far. Also important is the value of your trade. Are the odds at which you can get involved big enough to leave room for a decent profit?

Page 7: Tennis Trader

7 Betfair tennis betting markets On the Betfair homepage, click on the “Sports” tab: At the left of the next page you can find the “Markets” menu. Now click on “Tennis” – next click on “Coupons” – and finally click on “Todays In-Play Matches” This will get you to the In-Play matches for today…

Page 8: Tennis Trader

8 A quick first look at our 3 possible trading opportunities will tell us immediately which one to choose: GAME 1 – Bartoli / Silva Odds to BACK Bartoli to win this game: 1.02 Betfair Liquidity: no need to check it when the odds are too low! NO GAME 2 – Dulko / Schruff Odds to BACK Dulko to win this game: 1.25 Betfair Liquidity: a little over €200,000 NO GAME 3 – Dementieva / Tu Odds to BACK Dementieva to win this game: 1.28 Betfair Liquidity: a little over €500,000 YES NOTE: Game 2 and game 3 would both have been perfect trading opportunities but I took game 3 because of the higher liquidity.

9 Betfair tennis trade on Dementieva - OPEN - BACK Dementieva for €100 at odds of 1.28 to win this

game. On my back bet my net profit will be: €100 x 1.28 = €128 - €100 = €28 – 5% commission =

€26.60 if Dementieva wins this game, and I will lose my €100 stake if Tu wins this game.

10 -CLOSE-

Now I just have to wait for this 2nd set to finish and then close my trade immediately.

As you can see, Dementieva went on to win this 2nd set with 6-0! To close this trade and make a profit whichever player wins this game I will have to calculate the amount of money for my lay bet first. This is how you do it: (Back odds / Lay odds) x amount of your back bet = amount to lay (1.28 / 1.18) = 1.08 x €100 = €108 for the lay bet If Dementieva wins this game, my net profit will be €8.13 And if Tu wins this game, my net profit will be €7.60

11 One more time – step by step Let’s have a look at the steps one more time… STEP 1

www.xscores.com

STEP 2 Look for any games where 1 of the players is showing a comfortable lead in the current set being played. STEP 3 Are the odds still high enough to make a decent profit? If not, then leave that game alone. STEP 4 When the odds are still big enough, open the game by clicking on it and have a quick look at the Betfair liquidity. Betfair Liquidity = “Matched: EUR 503,351” STEP 5 When everything seems to be OK, open your trade by placing a BACK bet on the winning player first. STEP 6 As soon as your chosen player wins the current set, close your trade.

12 What to do when things go wrong? If you stick to the instructions on how to choose the right games then there is very little chance of a trade actually going the opposite way. But if it happens nevertheless, you just follow the same procedure as if you were to close a winning trade. The only difference is that instead of locking in a guaranteed profit, you will now close your trading position with a small loss. All calculations remain the same. For example:

At the score of 4-0 in the 2nd set, I open a trade on Dementieva and BACK her to win the game… Odds: 1.28 Stake: €100 Then Tu fights back and the score is suddenly 4-3 and maybe the odds go up to 1.35 to LAY Dementieva. To close this trade and get out with a small loss you will have to calculate the amount of money for your lay bet first, just as usual. (Back odds / Lay odds) x amount of your back bet = amount to lay (1.28 / 1.35) = 0.95 x €100 = €95 for the lay bet This will result in a €5.25 loss if Dementieva wins the game, and a €5.00 loss if Dementieva doesn’t win the game… BET STAKE ODDS WIN LOSE

Back €100 1.28 +28.00 -100 Lay €95 1.35 -33.25 +95 Result -5.25 -5

13 Betting bank and money management You don’t need a lot of money to start implementing this easy trading system. Your betting bank should grow fairly quickly when following all the steps in this tutorial. Just make sure that your Betfair account has enough money in it to cover both of your bets, back and lay. If not, you won’t be able to close your trades and lock in your guaranteed profit. Here is an example of a staking plan: WEEK 1 For the first week you should paper trade only. Follow the manual, open and close a few trades, but don’t put any real money on them yet. Make sure you understand the concept of backing and laying and calculating your 2nd bet to close the trade. WEEK 2 You can start trading with real money now. Betfair has a minimum stake of £2.00 / €4.00 and I highly recommend you stick to this for your 2nd week. You will make a very small amount of money, but this way you will become familiar with backing, laying and trading. WEEK 3 Once you are satisfied with your results and experience you can now go “all the way” and start trading with any amount of money you like.
