1950’sThe NBA’s first uniforms consisted of thick polyester jerseys and belted satin shorts. Players only had a limited amount of uniforms during the season, so durability was a must.

From 1950-1960, “candy striping” was used to outline the uniforms.

1960’sPlayers names were added to the back of uniforms and the NBA reduced uniform outfitters to one sponsor to create unity among the organization.

MacGregor Sand-Knit became the outfitter during the 1980’s and created a new technology: a cotton/polyester blend material that absorbs moisture and allows breathability. The cons? Players were only offered standard sizes.

Jersey necklines changed from scoop-neck to v-neck. Shorts also got tighter and shorter.

1989Fashion designer Alexander Julian designed the Charlotte Hornets uniforms, marking the first time a fashion designer made clothing for a major professional sports team.

Jerseys became more of a hot commodity among fans—which boosted NBA’s popularity worldwide.

1990’sMichael Jordan was a major factor to the switch from short-shorts, to longer shorts, thanks to him constantly tugging his shorts down. Uniforms became customized for the players, as Jordan started wearing his shorts longer.

2000’sIntroduced theme jerseys that varied from throwback jerseys to holidays such as Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, Mardi Gras.

The Toronto Raptors and other teams sported large logos in the 90’s. This trend was recently seen in the 2013 Christmas uniforms as well.

2006Adidas took over as official outfitter for the NBA. They developed a new sport fabric technology (lighter and fast drying jerseys) to help players feel comfortable as they played.
