Facts About Paralympics

After hosting a successful Olympic Games, Rio De Janeiro has

now geared up to host the Paralympics 2016. Paralympic is an

international multi-sport event which provides athletes with

physical and logical disabilities, an opportunity to shine. 2016

summer Paralympics has started from September 7th and will

Time Before Paralympics!

Before the Paralympics, athletes with disabilities

did seldom compete in the Olympics. In 1904,

American gymnast George Eyser won three gold

medals in a day, with an artificial leg.

Its Inception!

The first attempt to organize a specific contest for those

with disabilities came in 1948. The contest was organized

by a neurologist, Dr Ludwig Guttmann, at Stoke

Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire.

Got World-wide Recognition!

In 1952, the Dutch joined the league! And then the Paralympic

Games received an International status. In 1960, with 400

athletes from 23 countries took part in eight sports, the first

Paralympic Games held in Rome, Italy.

Its Tenure!

Since then, the Paralympics Games have taken place

after every four years. Athletes with different disabilities

participate in the games.

“Seoul” Paralympic Event!

In 1988, the Paralympic events took place in the

same city and venues as the Summer Olympics for

the first time i.e. Seoul.

Jason Smyth Broke The Record!

Visually impaired Jason Smyth broke the world record in 2012.

The 29-year old Smyth will now be focusing on acquiring a hat-

trick of gold medals in the 100m event in Rio.

Ticket Sales Marked One Million Mark!

Ticket sales for Rio 2016 Paralympic Games have crossed the one

million mark. There has been an upsurge in interest for the

Brazilians. Almost 100 sessions of the Paralympic Games have

already been sold out.

Division of Trials!

At the 2016 Summer Paralympics, there will be a total of 23

sports in which the potential Paralympic athletes will compete.

These 23 spots will be further divided into a surprising 528 trials

which will be managed across 21 different spots. The Paralympic

Games will be contained over 4000 athletes from 176 countries

across the globe.
