Task 2 – Coaching Log

Athlete Introduction

• Name: Oscar Gamble• Gender: Male• Date of birth: 26/04/1997• Age:17• Height: 5”10• Weight: 75kg• BMI: 23.7 (normal weight)• Sport: Football• Position: Centre Midfield• Level: Performance

Coaching Log – Athlete ObservationDate 12/12/2014

Location I used the footage available to us at college to analyze Oscar in three games for the academy

Strengths I feel I completed this section well as I watched well constructed footage of Oscar in action. Another strength was the fact that these videos have all been taken in the current 2014/15 season. Watching three videos also made my work a strength as it enabled me to see what he is like as a whole rather than just one game where he could've done something particularly well as a one off.

Improvement Areas

An improvement to my finding would've been to go watch Oscar in action in the flesh. This would help my work as it would enable me to see what he is like off the ball and not just when he is in contact with the ball and what is going on in the game. For a center midfielder movement off the ball is key which Is why I believe this would've improved my work as a whole.

Points for future discussion

Seeing Oscar play at a higher level than his standard could've been interesting to see if his strengths are still evident and to see if any more weaknesses are on show.

Possible actions arising

Attending more of Oscars games would help to back up my initial assessment with more findings.

Coaching Log – Athlete Profiling MeetingDate 15/12/2014

Location Worthing College

Discussion points

Once the meeting began I started off by giving a small explanation of what performance profiling was and how it benefits athletes, I then told them what ASA and API stand for. Once he understood better I explained in detail the scale which he will be assessed in and what each rating stands for. This was very important as all three of the athlete, myself, and the coach need to be on the same wave length when it comes to scoring Oscar out of ten.

Concerns Myself and Oscar went quickly through what he rated himself and I feel if oscar was to repeat his finding they would not come out the same as he seemed to rush through rating himself a bit. Also I feel Oscar felt a little bit embarrassed at saying he thought he was good at some trait therefore marked himself lower than he really thinks.

Points for future discussion

I would've liked to have spent more time going through ASA in order to get a more accurate set of finding s with the athlete. Not as rushed this time.

Possible actions arising

Oscar could watch the same three videos as I did in order to help him see how good he thinks he is at certain traits before filling out ASA and API. This ould make results more realistic.

Coaching Log – Coach Profile MeetingDate 16/12/2014

Location Worthing college

Discussion points

I started the meeting off by explaining to Oscars coach about how important his role is in Oscars player profile. Once I had done this I went on to describe the ratings out of ten so he understood what he was giving Oscar. I then gave the coach the traits on a piece of paper with a key showing the ratings and came back at the end of the day to pick up the results. I did this so that he didn’t feel he was being rushed in marking Oscar and also he didn't feel like he was being watched. I felt doing it this way would give a more representative set of findings.

Concerns One concern I had about leaving the coach alone to mark Oscar is that if he had any questions or queries I was not there on hand to help. Another concern I has was that the coach didn’t want to upset the player by marking too harshly so marked generously, however I do not think this was the case.

Points for future discussion

I would have liked to sit down after I had found out their top 4 strengths and weaknesses in order to see if the coach agreed with them as this would have reassured me with my findings. If the coach had not agreed I could've then sat down and seen where they thought it went wrong.

Possible actions arising

A second meeting with the coach would be beneficial in order to complete the performance profile and assess how valid they think it is, and whether they think any changes are needed to their sections.
