DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
Background: The project would like to tackle
environmental problems related to the effects of the
greenhouse gas emissions that are produced during the
production of structural ceramics for constructions,
especially those of stoneware and clinker bricks.
In addition we will intent to provide a new usage for
the recycled glass, so that we can tackle to
environmental problems at the same time.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
Abstract: The influence of the recycled glass adition
to the ceramic raw materials will be studied, in order
to decrease the firing temperature of the stoneware
manufacturing. The project includes three levels of
experimentation, lab, pilot plant and industrial plant,
using different kinds of raw material, both clay and
glass.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
Objectives: The main goal of the project is the
reduction of the environmental impact in the structural
ceramic sector through the introduction in the raw
materials of glass as a flux. The use of glass causes a
reduction of firing temperature, since the glass start to
melt at lower temperature than the ones used in
stoneware production.
Results: Energy saving 10-15%, by decreasing the
firing temperature about 100 or 150 ºC. Reducing de
CO2 emissions in 10-15%.

Expected results
The use of recycled glass as a raw material suggests the
transformation of a waste into resource thereby
diversifying and broadening the possibilities of its use at
the end of its useful life. In this sense the use of glass as
flux reduces the quality requirements of the source
material, making it possible to use glass of any kind,
composition, colour that for other processes are non-
viable (glass from WEEE, glass from end of life vehicles,
glass mixed in municipal solid waste).

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
Specific objectives:
Cost reduction of the stoneware brick manufacturing
process for two reasons: 1) decrease in the energy
requirements, 2) decrease of the price of source raw
material. All this brings about a 15% saving in the
manufacturing costs.
Cost reduction of glass recycling by reducing the
requirements for its reuse and increasing the energy
recovery possibilities of the same.
