Adopt a technology

A recipe for sinigang is a technology. We change the amount of salt or patis or sili, the kind of pang-asim (manggang hilaw, sampalok, etc), the “damo” (kangkong, talbos ng kamote, petsay, etc., etc.). We adapt the sinigang to our taste and the availability of ingredients.

A “recommended technology” can be used as starting point .

But to be able to adapt a “recommended technology”, you must…

understand it. know the reasons behind it.

You must know and understand its principles.

Page 13: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

“Our general philosophy has been that modern, highly productive farming practices depend on an understanding of the principles of plant growth. When principles are grasped, the practices follow logically.”

S. Chapman and L. CarterAuthors of “Crop Production”

Page 14: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

“Farmers do not simply adopt or reject technology options, they conduct various “trials” to better adapt these technologies in locally relevant ways.

Technology adaptation indicates farmers’ perception of the underlying principles behind technology options.

The modifications or adaptations are often more economical, less labor intensive and simpler.”

God’s Creationof Plants and Animals

on Earth(Verses from Genesis)

Page 16: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

12. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

11. Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so.

Page 17: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

13. And there was evening,

and there was morning--the third day.

Page 18: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

21. So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

20. And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky."

Page 19: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

22. God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.“

23. And there was evening,

and there was morning--the fifth day.

Page 20: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

24. And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so.

25. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Page 21: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

27. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

28. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.“

Page 22: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

29. Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.

30. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground--everything that has the breath of life in it--I give every green plant for food." And it was so.

Page 23: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

31. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning--the sixth day.

GENESIS IN REVERSE

Page 25: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

And humans said, “It is good”.

In the beginning was the earth. It was beautiful. And humans lived upon the earth.

And humans said: "Let us build skyscrapers and expressways”.

And humans covered the earth with steel and concrete.

Page 26: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

On the second day, humans looked upon the clear blue waters of the earth.

And humans said: “It is good”.

And humans did.The waters became dark and murky.

And humans said: “Let us dump sewage and wastes into the waters”.

Page 27: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

On the third day, humans gazed at the forests of the earth. They were tall and green.

And humans said: “It is good”.

And humans did.And the forest grew thin.

And humans said: “Let us cut the trees and build things for ourselves”.

Page 28: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

On the fourth day, humans saw the animals leaping in the fields and playing in the sun.

And humans said: “It is good”.

And humans did.And the animals became scarce.

And humans said: “Let us trap the animals for money and shoot them for sport”.

Page 29: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

On the fifth day, humans felt the cool breeze in his nostrils.

And humans said: “It is good”.

And humans did.And the air became dense with smoke and carbon.

And humans said: “Let us burn our refuse and let the wind blow away the smoke and debris”.

Page 30: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

On the sixth day, humans saw many kinds of people on the earth, different in race, color and creed.

And humans said: “It is good”.

And humans did. Missile sites and bomb dumps checkered the landscape.

And humans feared and said: “Let us make bombs and missiles in case misunderstandings arise”.

Page 31: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

On the seventh day, humans rested.

And it was good.

For humans were no more.

And the earth was quiet and deathly still.

Agriculture is harmed by environmental degradation.

Agriculture contributes to environmental degradation.

We should be able to reduce both.

And nature should be our guide.

Page 33: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

The Seven Environmental Principles

1. Nature knows best.

2. All forms of life are important.

3. Everything is connected to everything else.

4. Everything changes.

5. Everything must go somewhere.

6. Ours is a finite earth.

7. Nature is beautiful and we are stewards of God’s creation.

Page 35: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

I imagine your world, Lord, and feel so small.

We’ve messed it up, this beautiful world…just in my lifetime.

Like greedy, unappreciative children, we’ve ransacked your gifts…

taking what suits us and throwing the rest away like worthless trash.

Page 36: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

We’ve replaced the real things of life with imitations–

plastic homes,

plastic food made of artificial ingredients in a factory far from home,

plastic flowers in our outdoor pots,

plastic families living isolated lives…watching their personal TV alone.

Page 37: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

We’ve polluted the water.

We’ve manipulated plants to have patents but no seeds.

We’ve killed off some animals to extinction and exploited others as if they cannot feel.

It must make you very sad, Lord, to see your beautiful gifts, so awesome and intricate,

scattered in disarray all over the world.

Page 38: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

What can one person do to right the wrong that seems hopelessly out of control?

I will start today to clean up the mess…to put things back right.

Page 39: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

I will work in the garden you have given me.

I will plant trees.

I will treasure things made from loving hands.

I will see that my hands are always busy giving good to the world and not harm.

I will eat real food that is grown close to home.

Page 40: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

I will take time to nurture and appreciate the beauty in nature.

I will tread softly upon this earth and not take advantage of any living thing.

I will take time for my family and friends and not confuse the virtual world with relationships.

I will make the world around me kinder, lovelier, more natural, more joyful than it was before.

Page 41: 1. intro to technology jgc cs106

I will need help, Lord, since there’s a lot I don’t know how to do.

But, I will do what I can,

and learn what I can,

and encourage others to do the same…bringing hope and healing to their own garden….

called home.

Amen.
