1&1 VIRTUAL SERVERS

What is a Virtual Server?

What is a Virtual Server? For many users, having an entire set of powerful machines dedicated to their needs is overkill, so it makes economic sense to share. A virtual server is a solution whereby each user is allocated their own private portion of resources on a server that is shared among several users, thus the term virtual server. Each user then effectively has their own server running completely independently of the others, functioning in the same way as a regular server. Different users of the same physical server would never have access to other users’ data.

What can you do with a Virtual Server? With virtual servers, you can host multiple websites, databases, forums, blogs and much more, without having to invest in the hardware to run a dedicated physical server. Until you have data-intensive needs, a virtual server will fit the bill for most users.

Do I need to be a technical wiz to use a Virtual Server? Not at all. The management software 1&1 provides – Parallels® Plesk Panel – simplifies the process of managing your virtual server. You can control your server via the 1&1 Control Panel with ease, and you do not need to have expert knowledge of servers. We provide useful online FAQs, expert support by e-mail and phone, and you can contact our sales and support team 24/7 on 0844 335 1211.

What is a Virtual Server?

What’s the difference between shared hosting and a virtual server?Virtual servers differ from shared hosting as each customer’s virtual server is effectively separate from those of other customers and is provided with dedicated resources. If you need more control over your hosting environment or if your website becomes so busy that you need to take the next step up and move from shared resources to dedicated resources, then a virtual server is an ideal intermediate step without the outlay of a dedicated server.

What’s the difference between a cloud server and a virtual server?A cloud server gives you the ability to scale multiple virtual machines across multiple servers using cloud architecture, whereas a virtual server is a single segment of one physical server and provides a virtual environment to provide dedicated resources as and when you need them.

What’s the difference between a dedicated server and a virtual server?A virtual server differs from a dedicated server in that a user does not have a complete server dedicated to their content, but rather an area with a set of resources within a shared server that behaves as though it is a separate machine.

What is a Cloud Server?

What is a cloud server?Cloud computing allows you to store, access and share data from a cluster of Internet-connected devices known as ‘the cloud’. Cloud servers use the resources of a group of servers, allowing your websites and projects to use resources on a scalable basis. Because hardware resources are available virtually, it’s much simpler to vary them according to your current requirements.

What can you do with a cloud server?Cloud servers can be used for hosting single or multiple websites, as well as application servers, database servers, file or mail servers, name or web servers or any other type of servers that requires internet access.

Do I need to be a technical wiz do use a cloud server? Not at all. The management software 1&1 provides – Parallels® Plesk Panel – simplifies the process of managing your 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server. You can easily configure features and manage server performance at any time during your contract period via your 1&1 Control Panel or the 1&1 Mobile Cloud Server Management app. You can also use the 1&1 Control Panel to add or remove virtual machines as needed, whenever required. Alternatives to 1&1 Dedicated Servers

How much power do you need?If you’re only just starting a business with a small website, or your online project isn’t particularly data intensive, then the substantial resources of a dedicated server might be overkill. For a cost-effective solution with performance that sits between shared hosting and a full-on dedicated server, a 1&1 Virtual Server package might be what you’re looking for. While your website would still share a server with other customers, you would have the advantage of guaranteed resources, effectively acting as a separate machine.

Need more flexibility? While 1&1 Dedicated Servers deliver powerful performance on a consistent basis, maybe you’re unsure what level of resources you need, or for how long you need it. If this sounds familiar, you should consider the 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server. With independently-configurable server resources, the 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server can be configured at any time according to demand. Hourly billing ensures you only pay for the server performance you need, and there’s no base price or minimum contract period to worry about.

WHAT’S WHAT?

Page 26: A Beginners Guide to Servers by 1and1

What‘s What?

26® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013

The web hosting and server industry is full of complex terminology and acronyms, but sometimes the technical jargon can be overwhelming! In this section, we’ll break down and simplify terms used frequently in relation to servers to explain what they really mean.

Bandwidth/Connectivity SpeedBandwidth or connectivity speed refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over a connection during a set period of time. The greater the capacity, the faster the connection can respond, e.g. to users visiting your website. Bandwidth is usually measured in kilo/mega/giga bits per second (K/M/Gbit/s).

External connectivityExternal connectivity refers to the ability of a machine to reach other machines not in its local network, allowing remote users to gain access to it.

Full root access Simply put, having root access to a server gives you more control. The admin user has the ability to change, update and install the software and applications running on the server, with access to error logs and system configuration files at any time. An alternative to full root access is a managed service, where the hosting provider takes care of these services for you.

Hard Disk SpaceThe amount of storage on a hard disk is usually measured in mega/giga/tera bytes. The amount used depends on the amount of data you need to store and the size of your applications. Software, applications, databases, dynamic content and multimedia files such as audio, video, graphics and animation take up considerably more space than static text files.

Page 27: A Beginners Guide to Servers by 1and1

What’s What?

® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 27

HDDHDD stands for hard disk drive. The hard disk drive is the main and usually largest data storage device in a computer or server. The operating system, software and most other files are stored on the hard disk drive.

Operating systemAn operating system (OS) is software that enables computer hardware to communicate and interoperate with other software. The operating system is responsible for scheduling tasks, allocating storage and providing the default interface for the user with installed application suites. 1&1 offers both Microsoft® Windows and Linux operating systems for server products; both these platforms have strengths depending on what your server needs are and what applications you wish to run. Professional versions of these two operating systems are also offered as an option.

Parallels® Plesk PanelParallels® Plesk Panel is a server administration solution, providing a powerful yet easy-to-use web interface. In just a few clicks you can gain access to user account administration, configurations and settings, and customise the design of the web interface to your individual needs – all you need is a web browser.

Processor core(s)In computing, a processor core is the unit that reads and executes program instructions. The processor, also called the CPU or Central Processing Unit, is one of the most important parts of a functioning server system.

RAIDRAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. It is a storage technology that helpsprevent data getting lost when a disk drive fails. RAID keeps multiple copies of data on multiple disk drives, with several ‘RAID levels’ depending on need.

Page 28: A Beginners Guide to Servers by 1and1

What’s What?

® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 28

All 1&1 Dedicated and Virtual Servers have multiple hard disks that are interconnected using either software or hardware base RAID (1-6). The 'RAID network' allows increased security of your data as the information is spread out across multiple hard disks. Should one of them fail, the others will simply keep on working – your server won't be affected by any malfunction. It will still be possible to request your data, which will remain accessible without having to adjust any settings manually. Operating the RAID network is just as convenient to the end-user as a system that uses just one hard disk.

RAID 1 – Automatic mirroring This level keeps the same data on two drives; reading and writing of data is carried out automatically in the background using both drives.

RAID 5 – Power, memory and data security For higher demands we offer servers with RAID 5 disk arrays; the same data is stored over three or more drives. When a drive fails, its data can be reconstituted from the information on the others in the array. The drive failure is masked from the end user.

RAID 6 – Maximum securityRAID 6 provides maximum performance with the highest security against failure. It can handle two disks failing at the same time. RAID 6 is suited to complex applications that need the highest levels of availability.

What’s What?

® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 29

RAMRAM stands for Random Access Memory and refers to the fast memory chips in a computer or server used as temporary workspace by the processors. Generally, the more RAM, the higher the performance. RAM can be divided into various types:

Dynamic RAMDynamic RAM, also known as DRAM, is the most common type of RAM in use today. The term ‘dynamic’ refers to how the memory is constantly refreshed.

Guaranteed RAMGuaranteed RAM is not a limit but the minimum availability of RAM. No matter how much RAM other servers use, this amount is available to you at all times.

Server management and server monitoring apps via smartphoneServer management and monitoring are both available from 1&1 via smartphone apps for iPhone and Android:

1&1 Mobile Server Monitoring AppThis app allows you to set up automatic notifications on your smartphone and be alerted if a service has a status change regarding your server availability.

1&1 Mobile Cloud Server Management AppThis app allows you to adjust the number of processor cores, the amount of RAM and the hard disk storage space for your 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server at any time from your smartphone.

What’s What?

SSL CertificateAn SSL Certificate is a means of encrypting personal data transmitted over the Internet. Data between the web server and website visitors is exchanged in encryption mode, protecting personal data such as bank details and customer information from unauthorised access. An SSL connection can be identified by the 'https://' in the address line of the browser – so a visitor can tell that communication with the website can’t be monitored by any third party.

SnapshotSnapshot is a tool that allows you to easily create a record of your server configurations for each virtual machine of your 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server package as and when you need it, free of charge. You can freeze each configuration and database on demand and use it as a recovery point. Each Snapshot can be saved and every new one created will override the previous one.

TrafficIn relation to servers, traffic is a very general term that typically refers to the overall amount of data

transmittedover a network at a given time. Traffic and bandwidth can be compared to pipes and the water that flows in

them –traffic corresponds to the water and bandwidth to the width of the pipe, therefore wider pipes equal morebandwidth. Traffic is generally measured in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB). All 1&1 Servers come with unlimited traffic, which means you don’t have to worry about your costs in peak/off peak traffic transmissions.

vCore(s)A vCore or virtual core is part of a single CPU that splits its operations between multiple processes that do

notinterfere with each other. vCores are different to physical cores, which are physically separate from each

other.

Virtual machineIn the context of the 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server, a virtual machine or VM refers to an individually

configurable unitthat behaves like a single server, but which actually shares space with other virtual machines on a server.

Theadvantage of VMs is that they can easily be scaled up or down depending on your performance

requirements.

One big choice you have when ordering a 1&1 Server package is whether to opt for a Linux, Windows or Managed operating system. Both platforms work with any computer (e.g. you don’t need Linux installed on your machine at home to use a Linux server) and are capable of powering impressive websites and online projects. Each platform has its own distinct advantages for users:

LinuxCharacteristically reliable, stable and efficient, Linux is proven in the most demanding web server environments. If you plan to incorporate work that uses PHP, Perl or MySQL languages, Linux is the solution you should choose. Linux is also ideal for the kind of websites that display information as a brochure, in newsletter format or as data sheets. Linux works well for ‘brochureware’ sites that offer interaction via enquiry forms, online purchasing and other eCommerce functions.

When looking for ready-to-use solutions to power your website, applications such as blogs, content management systems or discussion boards, more open source applications can be found for Linux hosting, while software for Windows hosting is more likely to be based on licensed sources you have to pay for.

WindowsWindows facilitates varying degrees of design and management through a drag-and-drop philosophy via .NET Framework and SharePoint. In this way, Windows presents an advantage when it comes to the integration of Windows applications when you’re designing your website. Essential Windows-specific applications such as ASP® work particularly well.

Windows also presents an advantage if you plan to incorporate searchable databases on your website. The reduced development time and better integrated functionality characteristics of Windows offer a real advantage for users wishing to incorporate database facilities.
