DESCRIPTION
This is a case study in the challenges we faced at Wagstaff in migrating our Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering groups from our legacy custom PDM & document control systems to Teamcenter 8. We’ll address our strategies for data migration, CAD integration, customization, training, and support, as well as the reasons we took the direction we did. Lastly, we’ll talk about how we work with our corporate IT team to implement our methodologies for managing Teamcenter.

Wagstaff - The World Leader in Aluminum Casting
Equipment
About Wagstaff
• Wagstaff, Inc., a 63-year-old, Spokane, Washington based manufacturer, provides machinery, technology, and service to enable aluminum producers to transform molten aluminum into solid shapes – “billets” (rounds) and “ingots” (slabs) using “direct chill” casting.
• Wagstaff develops, engineers, designs, and manufactures sophisticated molds, casting machines, automated systems, and ancillary equipment at our Spokane and Kentucky facilities and has commissioned systems in 54 countries.
Session Expectations
• Attended PLM Connection 2009• Applied for 3 sessions for 2010• Teamcenter is not yet live at Wagstaff• Session is a case study of how we got to where
we are today in the planning for setup, configuration and deployment of Tc8
• Sorry, no code today
CAD Administration Group (CADmin)
• Dept. began in 2007 w/3D CAD Adopted• Independent of IT Department• Answer to the Engineering Department• We are an Engineering-specific IT department• 18 mos. ago added Dave Stockdale and took
on goal of implementing Teamcenter
CADmin Philosophy
Make the Right Way the Easy Way
Wagstaff CAD History
• Began using CAD & CAM in the mid-1980s• AutoCAD for Design• UG CAM (Uniapt) for Manufacturing• UG CAD for Mold Design (1998)• Wagstaff Drawing Management (1994)
• AutoCAD (.dwg) & UG (.plt)• Wagstaff Document Control (1995)
Legacy Drawing & Document Control
• Wagstaff developed two systems internally dating back to the early 1990s
• System to Track Engineering Drawings• System to Track Corporate Documents• Both are VB6 Programs Utilizing Microsoft
Access Databases• Tracking 118,897 discrete files & 125,433 total
revisions (1.05 revisions/file)
Drawing Control
• AutoCAD (.dwg)• NX (.plt)
* Teamcenter
Document Control
• Corporate Documents– Legal Docs, Policies,
etc.– Standards, Practices,
etc.• Word Documents,
Spreadsheets, PDF Files, Flow Charts, etc.
Other Wagstaff Corporate Systems
• Lotus Notes– Email– CRM/Sales– Corporate ‘Intranet’
• JDEdwards– Corporate ERP– BOM Management
Other Wagstaff Engineering Tools
• AutoCAD 2004/2007• SolidWorks• Autodesk Inventor• EPLAN• Flow 6 & Visio• Variety of Open Source Tools & Utilities
Engineering Department Structure
• Mechanical Engineering– Billet Tables (AutoCAD)– Ingot Tables (AutoCAD)– Special Products (AutoCAD)– Mold Design (NX)
• Mfg Engineering (NX)• R&D (NX, SolidWorks)
Existing Folder/File Structures
J:\<Customer> \<Project> \ - XXXYYYAABBCC.prt \Drawings - XXXYYYAABBCC.prt
Wagstaff “Seed” Model Strategy
• Parametric Models of our Standard Products• Use “Expressions” Tied to Spreadsheets• Spreadsheets Contain User Inputs for Various
Configuration Inputs for the Product• Once Parameters are Entered, the User Can
Regenerate the Seed Model to Match the Parameters in the Spreadsheet
Ingot Mold Seed Model
Billet Table Seed Model
Seed Model Inventory
Teamcenter Strategy/Config
• Teamcenter 8.1 (Unified)• Simple PDM Functionality Only
– Vaulting but no Workflows Initially
• No Multi-Site Needs Initially (2-tier only)• Initially a Single Volume Server• Implement NX Reuse Library• IT Mandated Oracle Database **• Sync Revs of Seed Models w/External Configuration
Input Spreadsheets
Calculating Teamcenter Storage
Files in Drawing Management118897 total files
125433 118,897 discrete part number files
125,433 sum of all files & revisions
1.05 revs/part
Teamcenter Storage
• J: & L: Drives – (NX & AC) Proj. Data, Std Parts– 1TB SAN Vol / 580GB Used
• N: & V: Drives – Personal Data (mod. redundancy)– 3TB SAN Vol / 2TB Used
Note: Initially, Only Current & New Projects Migrated, Legacy Projects Don’t
Live Teamcenter Server
• Single 2-Tier Server Config• 2 Local Drives, 1 SAN Drive
– C: 70GB– D: 300GB– E: 1TB (SAN)
Deployment Strategy
• Test 2-Tier Server Config on TCTEST2 Server• Test Client Configs in Limited Staged Env.• IT Mandates Scripted Installs Currently• Basic Teamcenter User Training via Learning
Advantage• Short Physical Class in Wagstaff-Specific
Processes– Seed Cloning / Reuse Library / Project Release / etc…
Deployment & Live Support
• EngNet will Be Portal for Training and Support Issues– Video Library (Wagstaff-specific)– Learning Advantage (Generic Teamcenter)
• EngNet will be hub for CADmin service and system monitoring– Log of Update script Execution– Logs of trouble tickets– User discussion forums
Wagstaff Engineering Net Intranet
• Per customer defaults, it is the home page within NX
• Users have access to our growing library of how-to videos
• Covers Wagstaff specific training purposes.
Engineering Net Help & Support
• Users also have access to Tc install page
• Users install & update Teamcenter
• For now scripted manual installs only
• Additional Links Learning Advantage Training
Engineering Net CADmin Tools
• Allows CADmin to monitor system / Teamcenter / NX update history and client workstation issues
Final Teamcenter 8.1 Implementation
Teamcenter Roadmap
• Migrate Design BOM to Teamcenter & Export it to JDE on release to Mfg Engineering
• Automate NX Integration Issues• Automate some basic Wagstaff-specific tasks
in Teamcenter• Closer Integration with JDE• Begin Adding Basic Workflows
