Interoperability - a wider view

• Interoperability isn’t just metadata, APIs and wire protocols

• It’s policies, comparability and markets

• People want to compare services

• We need trust in transferability

• None of us are perfect

• Without oversight, standards can slip

• External perspectives encourage improvement

• Audit formalises this

• Easier to please auditors when using standards

• Easier to compare A with B

• Audits themselves - in standard form - allow consumers, depositors to compare

• Is A better value/more trustworthy/more secure/more open than B?

• What is the likelihood that you will lose 1 bit in X years ?

• What confidence limits apply to that number ?

• What is the energy cost of preserving X bits over Y years ?

• Do you do an environmental audit ?

• Are you certified against recognised standards ?

• Content is later transferred - merger, takeover, change of collection policy

• Who do I sue ?
