1. Wrap Up – 5 min
Warm-Up
Within the next five minutes, write down as much as you know about cells.
Today’s Objectives
• I will define the words cell, multicellular, unicellular.
• I will identify the scientist who contributed to the cell theory.
• I will articulate the three principals of the cell theory.
Exploring the Cell and Cell Theory
What are cells?Cells are the basic unit of life.
The cell theory grew from the work and research of many scientists.
Who was involved?
More was learned about cells as microscopes improved over the years
What did they use?
Used light microscopes to look at plant tissueNoticed that a piece of dead cork had tiny chambersCalled them cells because they looked like the cells
of a monastery
Hooke's Microscope Hooke's drawing of Cork Cells
Robert Hooke
Anton van Leeuwenhoek (LAY-vuhn-hook)
One of first people to use a microscope to study living things from nature
Able to see things that no one had seen before
First person to see the tiny organisms living in pond water
Matthias Schleiden (SHLY-dun)– All plants are made of cells
Theodor Schwann– All animals are made of cells
Rudolf Virchow– Looked at how cells reproduce– Cells come from cells that already exist
Other Important Scientists
A theory is a well tested hypothesis that can explain a broad range of observations.
The cell theory applies to all living things BIG and small and has three main principals.
Cells can provide a lot of information about living things.
These scientists’ studies led to the development of the cell theory!
Three Principles of the Cell Theory
Principle # 1
All organisms are made of one or more cells.– Some organisms are made up of one cell or
unicellular– Others are multicellular or made up of many cells
The cell is the most basic unit of life.
Principle # 2
Principle # 3 All existing cells are produced by other living
cells.
Name that Guy
Procedure
1. Read a brief paragraph of each scientist and underline key information.
2. Form teams of two and discuss each scientist.3. As a team, come up with a one sentence
summary of what each scientist contributed to our understanding of cells.
4. Each team shares their summary of each scientist with the class.
5. Play “Name that Guy” (Quiz, Quiz, Trade style)
