Minimum tools to begin with: Camera and lens

Are you new to studio photography or planning to make a career in the profession? There is a minimum set of instruments that you will require to begin with. The first instrument that a photographer needs is a sophisticated camera and lens of varies focal length (mostly wide and ultra wide angle lens).

Softbox, beauty dish, umbrella, flash head and reflector are some of the instruments that must be present in a studio. Buy the above mentioned devices in pair. Besides, you will need backgrounds and half a dozen stands.

Basically, there are three types of lights used in a studio set up- key, fill and back. Different lighting equipments are used as key, fill and back lights.

Key

Key light(s) is the primary set of lights for illuminating a subject. Beauty dish and softbox are used for lightening a model.

Fill

Fill light is used to tone down the hard edges created by the key lighting tools. An umbrella is good for the purpose.

Back

•Back light separates subject from background. Dimmer light is preferred for isolating subject and background.

•If you are short on lighting instruments, you can also try reflectors.
