THE ROLE OF BIG DATA IN ENERGY SECTOR

Our natural energy resources like oil and gas are on a verge of desolation but the amplitude of consumption of energy is jumping up with each passing day. Thus, proper optimization of its use is the only way to earn some extra days.

Only, a digitised automation system on production, demand and supply chain can provide utmost optimization of this energy but, without dealing with Big data, the system can’t be implied.

BIG DATA IN PRODUCTION CENTERS

❏ PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE: The streams of data generated from components passes through an analytic software to monitor the health the components. It generates alert when a certain component is about to worn out and needed to be replaced. Hence, replacing the partially worn out component reduces the downtime of the plant.

❏ IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY: Low downtime of plant improves productivity.

❏ IMPROVE PROFITABILITY: When the productivity increases it directly reflected in profitability.

CONVENTIONAL GRID: Electricity distribution took place using a network of transmission lines, transformers, substations which are collectively known as “Grid”.

Power plants had any idea about real-time energy consumptions and thus it maintain to produce a fixed amount of energy at various times of a day according to the average consumer demand. But, it’s not fit to meet the complex need of electricity in 21st century.

7ENERGY OPTIMIZATION USING SMART GRID

Smart Grid Technology:

❏ Incorporates a two way communication concept.❏ Consists of several sensors through its transmission

lines which incorporate with various digital devices ❏ Collects feedback data from consumers and analyse

them and demand the power plant for more or less energy.

❏ Power plants amplify or reduces its production according to those data.

❏ If the demand is too high, it collects energy from other power plants or natural resources such as Solar, Windmill or Water Mill to fulfil the deficit.

BENEFITS OF USING SMART GRID❏ Efficient transmission of electricity❏ Lower operational and management cost which results in lower

power cost for consumers❏ Quick restoration of power disturbance❏ Increase integration of large scale energy systems❏ Reduce peak demand, resulting lower energy rates❏ Improved security❏ Integration of customer-owner power generation systems

BIG DATA- USER END BENEFITS OF SMART METERS

❏ Smart Grid provides you the information about the electric usages in real-time to manage your own electricity usage to reduce your electricity bills.

❏ It uses “Smart Meters” which measures and provide energy consumption details in real time.

❏ The energy is costlier in the peak hour while energy demand is very high and power has to be collected from other power plants, hence reducing power consumption in these hours can reduce electricity bills.

BIG DATA-SMART HOME❏ In smart homes, smart devices and smart meter are

connected through a Home Area Network or HAN to a utility namely home Energy Management System (EMS) which manages the consumption of a home’s electric usages.

❏ It communicates with energy providers via the smart meters and collect various information like energy rates for real-times, the total load on the grid etc and provide all these information in a meaningful format in your handhelds.

❏ Schedule tasks for your smart appliances and cut off electric bills by avoiding peak hours. Also allocate tasks and priorities to your various smart appliances.

BIG DATA-BENEFITS OF SMART HOMES

❏ Convenience: Convenience is the biggest reason for which people buy smart homes. Everything of your home can be controlled from your smart handhelds.

❏ Security: Smart home includes advanced security systems like video camera, motion sensors, link to local police station etc.

❏ Accessibility: Smart home provides a range of accessibility features including voice commands for locking door, make a telephone etc.

❏ Energy Efficiency: It can automatically control every equipment to make the home energy efficient. For example, it can automatically turn off lights when no one is in room.

❏ Cost effective: Smart homes can prioritize your work and do non urgent work when the electricity price is low.
