PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main aim of this project is to build a pilot scale processing unit for the processing of rotenone from tuba plant.

The main objective of this project is to develop commercially viable, environmental friendly and human safe bio-pesticide.

Rotenone from Derris elliptica (Tuba) is the main active ingredient (A.i) for bio-pesticide production.

To undertake the potential collaboration project with UPM, USM, MARDI & FELCRA.

LITERATURE REVIEWS

The earliest recorded insecticidal use of rotenone was against leaf eating caterpillars in 1848. Rotenone was isolated 1902.

Rotenone harmless to plants, highly toxic to many insects and relatively innocuous to mammals.

LITERATURE REVIEWS

Rotenone is a naturally occurring chemical with insecticidal and piscicidal properties extracted from the roots of several plant species belonging to genus Derris spp grown in Malaysia, East Indies and South America or Lonchocarpus spp grown in Central and South America .

Rotenone is being used worldwide to control aphids, maggots, bagworms, diamond back moth, Japanese beetles, leaf hopper and Mexican bean beetles. It is also used to control grubs, ticks, lice and fleas on cattle.

Emulsifiable concentrates and wettable powders of rotenone are also extensively used in lakes, ponds and reservoirs to control undesirable fish.

BIO-PESTICIDE INDUSTRY SEARCH IN MALAYSIA

Rotenone based bio-pesticide is not available in Malaysia.

No rotenone based pesticide listed in Pesticide Board of Malaysia until 13th April 2004.

There is also no rotenone-based industry listed in Malaysia despite of abundance growth of tuba plants in Malaysian palm oil and rubber plantations. Not to forget that Malaysian forest is home to several tuba species.

Some of the tuba species located in Malaysia produced high rotenone content ex.; Derris spp
