Chapter 1
Q1:Do you know what is “biodiversity”?

Biodiversity is the variety of life: the different plants, animals and micro-
organisms, their genes and the ecosystems of which they are a part.
Q2:So…… is it important to us?
ANSWER:Yes, sure. It is the foundation of our
life. We can not live without it.
Q3: Oh, IS IT ? how does it affect our life?
Answer:Photo collage of days of human beings:
WEEKDAYS
WEEK-END
HOLI-DAY
• Provide the food which is essential to support our life.
• Provide good quality of living environment. • Provide benefit to human health and
wellbeing.• Provide place of interests for entertainment-
tourism .• Help the growth of economy .

Current policies
• 1. Integrate the protection of biodiversity and ecosystem processes into urban development and planning policies and processes.
• 2. Increase the integrity and viability of areas of biological significance by effectively managing land use impacts.
• 3. Increase the viability of areas of biological significance by identifying and protecting them and creating linkages between them.
EDUCATIONBiodiversity protection is not only the responsibility of the government ,the
planner .It is the responsibility of everyone of us.
• Advertisement: attract the community’s attention
• Learning at school• For children: Let the children have the course of biodiversity, making them
understand “what biodiversity is and how important it is.”Precedent: National Threatened Species Day Poster-held by
Environment Australia September 7, 2004
EDUCATION• For Uni Hold some research programs about biodiversity in different
school.Precedent: Biocity sudio in the School of Architecture,
Landscape Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Adelaide.
EDUCATION• Learning by doing-Provide an opportunity for
community participation in biodiversity conservation and can also be an avenue for social interaction.
For children: Hold some camps for biodiversity education . Make the
children learn biodiversity by the interaction with the wild life.
EDUCATION• For community: Native trees planting program for helping recover the habitat
loss: Ask the community to involve such conservation project to make them
have a deeper understanding of the biodiversity, the causes of biodiversity crisis and the environmental issues that may carry to other aspects of life.
Precedent: The Canopy program -run by the Australian Carbon Biosequestration Initiative Ltd (ACBI).
EDUCATION• It is a program to suggest people to go “carbon neutral” or “offset” their
greenhouse gas emissions. To offset generally means to pay someone else to compensate for the greenhouse gas emission you cause.
• Planting trees is one way to offset emission. More over, they encourage people to offset their emission by buying
the carbon credit.
Think of it this way. Planting a seed is a start. Growing a tree is a small step. One forest is a beginning and with a Canopy of forests we can begin to
change the world.
EDUCATION• Learning by playing-develop the ecology
tourism Nature tourism attracts tourists with an interest in temporarily living in, and
coming to better understand a specific, novel, relatively natural ecosystem. Its primary focus is on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation.
