who were already becoming dissatisfied. Lost time, maintenance costs and fear of losing customers were unpredictable factors that prevented us to calculate the actual cost of a print. Because the quality of printing was changing all the time while the devices prevented us from using various kinds of printing media we decided to change this and purchase a new printer. I am quite convinced that we actually lost a customer or two due to the variation of quality.”

Because of the past experiences KUP ’s demands were set very high and they started to look for a flagship solution on the market. The list of demands comprised technical characteristics, such as quality of a print, speed, possibility of printing on a large set of media as well as possibility of upgrading the equipment. Also they were looking for a solution offering simple, fast and intuitive operation. “All this we were able to find only in Canon imagePRESS C800 that exceeds the competitive devices of its class on the Serbian market,” said Mr. Šikoparija.

Overview

The company KUP was founded in 1979 first as a photo-copying shop but later it enlarged their business with printing services. Today they are one of the largest and most advanced digital printers and photo-copy shops with 20 employees, striving towards production of printed material of the highest quality. For this reason the number of Canon devices in their fleet is constantly increasing and they already plan to purchase new ones to replace the existing solutions.

With strong support of their partner OSA Racunarski inzenjering they have become one of the more significant users of Canon devices and therefore also a reference for many other printing businesses in their region. With regular updates of their fleet they are capable to achieve high standards of quality, and very often even exceed the expectations of their customers. This was also in the case of the purchase of light production printer imagePRESS C800 that replaced the obsolete KUP’s devices.

Inadequate support and high costs In their decision to buy a new device prevailed the need for a

more modern solution because the devices so far used in KUP were outdated as to their software as well as hardware and they also had a very unsatisfactory service support. Besides high costs of print KUP was also losing precious time mainly because of the old and unreliable equipment and lack of spare parts.

They had a chance to test the printer at Canon’s partner OSA who at the time of purchase had cooperated with KUP already for three years. Before, OSA had already installed a large format printer Océ Plotwave 360, whereas Plotwave 365 and imageRUNNER 8595 were subsequently delivered together with imagePRESS C800. At the time of writing of this case study KUP was expecting the delivery of a new imagePROGRAF PRO 6000S.

A conclusive decision to purchase a Canon light production printer was reached after a visit of DRUPA fair where they could see an imagePRESS C800 in its full configuration. Its possibilities of various upgrades left a deep impression on them. “Our decision was strongly supported also by the reliability of the partner, low cost of print and by the maintenance contract the service costs of which are calculated based on the price of a printed page.”

Setting the new standards of quality KUP purchased the imagePRESS C800 together with a booklet finisher, a basic unit to produce booklets that significantly speeds up the production of printed material. For this purpose they previously needed to engage additional workers who can now perform other duties or attend to the customers while the device does its work automatically. The installation of the printer was finished in a few hours, during the summer of 2016, and they were able to immediately include it into their commercial operations with its full operational capacity. It is necessary to emphasize, however, that the employees of KUP are especially well qualified and therefore the implementation of such an intuitive device as the imagePRESS C800 did not present any problems at all.

a premium quality duplex printing on numerous printing media of up to 300 gsm, its reliability, constant quality and high printing speeds of up to 80 ppm,” underlined Mr. Šikoparija.

Types of media most frequently used in KUP are plain paper, photographic paper, textured media, labels and special types of relief paper that is especially demanding for printing. For this, imagePRESS C800 uses the rubber belt to fix the toner into the actual structure of the paper, therefore using toner to cover all the unevenness of the paper surface. This is a technology that is offered only by Canon within this price range of printers.

The printer is also equipped with a special multi-purpose paper feeding tray which minimizes the possibility of paper jams while using paper of higher grammage. “The new printer has brought significant changes to our work. It is good to know that we can rely on the device at all times and that it will fulfill our and customer’s expectations. We don’t only save time with higher speed but also with the booklet finisher that works totally automatically,” says Mr. Šikoparija.

When considering savings, the main advantage of the printer is lowering the costs of printing by 25 percent. It enabled KUP to enlarge its scale of business and become more competitive in the market by offering end-customers not only better quality services but also lower prices. The result is also

Enlarging the printing fleet with Canon

Because of their satisfaction with partner OSA Racunarski inzenjering as well as with the delivered printers, they wish to gradually replace their other existing devices with Canon’s solutions. They are especially interested in Canon’s achievements in the development of production printing, where they expect novelties that will enable them not only to replace their existing equipment but also to offer new services and to enlarge their scale of business.

“In KUP we follow the innovations in the printing industry very closely and we do not want to limit ourselves with the set norms and standards. That’s why we – as the first in our region – started with 3D-crystal engraving and we are also deeply interested in the development of 3D printing,” concluded the director.

Director of KUP emphasized the fact that for the manufacturer the choice of a distribution partner is just as or even more important than everything else. After all, the customer cooperates daily not with the manufacturer but with a distributor, therefore the distribution partner is the one who represents the brand and can make a good impression of it. The difference is in the attentiveness of the partner towards the customer, and is evident from his support, responsiveness and businesslike approach.
