Introduction
• In 2002 the Nigeria’s Presidential Initiative
on cassava was launched
• Objective of achieving an annual income of US$5 billion from processing and exporting cassava
• IITA supported this vision by the initiation of 2 projects

1. Reduce impact of CMD disease
• The Problem • Imminent and increasing possible threat of the Ugandan strain of the CMD
virus to the Nigerian cassava economy
• Proposed solution • Pre-emptive management of CMD through rapid deployment CMD-resistant,
high yielding cultivars
• Constraints • IITA cannot release a cassava variety in Nigeria • Variety release process in Nigeria takes from 6 to 8 years (no release of new
cassava variety from 1986 to 2004) • Fast track participatory selection approach (FTPSA) • All executing agencies involved in variety release participate from the onset in
a combined series of trials executed concurrently for 2 years.
