What is Computer Control?

• Computers are capable of controlling many other devices.

• Device control / Peripheral devices (devices linked to your computer) such as your printer and speakers are controlled directly by your computer by sending it signals .

Computer Systems

Control systems are part of everyday life. They are all around us.

Page 7: Computer devices

Computer Control

Computers control devices all around the house for instance,

• microwaves

• washing machines

• televisions

• video recorders

• electronic games.

They may be doing work for you such as starting

or finishing at a set time.

They may control time, power, electric motors and so on,

in the following devices!

Task 1 – Put these instructions in order

You have 5 minutes

Instructions

There are two types of instructions:

1. Instructions with assumptions

2. Precise step by step instructions

All instructions needs to be easy to understand

Page 11: Computer devices

Assumptions

Some instructions are not very precise:e.g. Get the book from the table

because some details are not needed such as:

• How far the table is?• What the table looks like?• What the book looks like?

Page 12: Computer devices

Precise Instructions

Precise instructions or step by step instructions need to be accurate otherwise things will not work

e.g. Recipe, flat pack furniture

Page 13: Computer devices

Task 2

Write a set of instructions for making a cup of tea

Using Word / Publisher create a leaflet with the instructions

You have 15 minutes

Every system must have an input and an output.Input is signal going into the computer from an external device, such as your fingers on a keyboard or your voice via a microphone.Output is when the computer makes a peripheral (outside) device to do something, such as speaker produces sound or a printer prints a document.

What can I remember?

Computers are capable of controlling many devices.

Precise instructions or step by step instructions need to be accurate otherwise things will not work

Every system has an input and an output.

For every cause there is usually an effect.
