On this contents page from blender the use of the master head being in bold retro sans serif style font across the top it draws the reader in and gives off an image that the magazine is directed at the

younger generation. They then are immediately drawn to the cover star Katy Perry holding a giant mushroom as the mushroom is in the primary optical area which shows the magazine follows the rule of thirds and has an informal design balance as the mushroom and her skirt are almost the same colour.

By having a bold sans serif font as the mast head on the contents page as well as on the front cover it shows that Blender use the same house style throughout their magazine. Through having the cover stories down the side of the contents page it also ties in with the house style. With the cover lines’ being straight down the right hand side it shows that the magazine is clear, simple and straight to the point as well as directed towards a younger target audience through the use of sans serif fonts which are also used on the front cover. The use of sans serif fonts mirrors the house style used within the front cover as the fonts are clear on a plain background with bold titles.

By having Katy hold a giant mushroom it ties in with her quirky image. The use of Katy being used as the cover star on the contents page also mirrors the house style of the front page. With there being a tagline quote from an interview with Katy in the weak fallow area it entices the audience to want to know more about what the interview is about and what else is said within it.

On the contents page from Q magazine a mixture of serif fonts, used on the company’s ‘Q’ master head it shows that the magazine overall is aimed at an older generation as it gives off a formal

classical image which mirrors the house style used throughout the front cover as the same colours; black, white and red are used within the contents page as well as the front cover.

Through the use of sans serif font for the cover lines could give off the image that this issue is targeted more at a younger audience. The cover lines being down the side of the image of the cover star also mirror the house style used on the front cover of Q magazine as the cover lines are also positioned down either side of the cover star which keeps the page looking clear, organised and easy to read which would appeal to the audience as they wouldn’t want to read a magazine that was confusing.

The use of The Courteeners as the cover stars for the contents page

it shows that the magazine is aimed at an audience who prefer indie music to an audience that like music such as mainstream etc. The rule of thirds is used on the contents page as well as the front cover to reinforce beliefs by audiences that the magazine is organised and the house style ties in with the sans serif font to show that this issue is aimed at a younger generation as not only are the titles bold but the colours are too.
