• Average cost of a data breach is $7.2 million - up 7% from 2009
• Average cost per record is $214 - up 5% from 2009• Small businesses with between 11-100 employees
are the overwhelming majority of attacks• Data shows the cost of a breach is directly related
to the company’s attitude toward IT security and implementation of best practices

• 96% of hacks were avoidable with minor tweaks to controls or little added security
• $4.5 million of the total costs are related to lost revenue, over 62%
• 92% of data breaches were initiated externally• 17% of breaches involved an insiders

• 76% of compromised data was taken from servers• 89% subject to PCI regulations were not in
