Low Temperature Detection Concept

(the Science bit)

Page 15: Cryoconnect and the space marketplace an idiots guide

Low Temperature Detection

Concept (e.g., SPIRE)

Herschel Plank Launch : Eric Sawyer, RAL Space

• Need to detect long wavelength IR radiation.

(200 to 650 microns)

• This is emitted by cool things in space

• The temperature of bodies radiating at these

wavelengths is 4 to 15K

(-269 to -258 degrees C)

• This is not very warm,

but it is still “heat”.

Page 16: Cryoconnect and the space marketplace an idiots guide

Herschel Plank Launch : Eric Sawyer, RAL Space

Heat flow depends upon surroundings If you open the door of the fridge,

you don’t feel heat.

In fact you start to warm up the fridge

That’s because you are warmer than the fridge.

Page 17: Cryoconnect and the space marketplace an idiots guide

Heat flow depends upon surroundings If, however, you are colder than the fridge, you

will see the inside of the fridge as warm or at least warmer

Herschel Plank Launch : Eric Sawyer, RAL Space

Page 18: Cryoconnect and the space marketplace an idiots guide

Heat flow depends upon surroundings If, however, you are colder than the fridge, you

will see the inside of the fridge as warm or at least warmer

So the ability to detect heat (IR radiation)

depends upon the temperature of the observer. Herschel Plank Launch : Eric Sawyer, RAL Space

SPIRE Instrument principle

A detector element, it absorbs heat

and we measure its temperature rise.

Surround the detector element with

something cold

conducting much heat into it.

SPIRE Instrument principle

Each detector is an array of these elements

String Not ordinary string

Kevlar fibres (poly paraphenylene terephthalamide)

Developed by Dupont 1965

>5 times stronger than steel (weight for weight)

Low thermal conductivity

Used in body armour, climbing ropes etc. Herschel Plank Launch : Eric Sawyer, RAL Space

Lightweight – to reduce overall payload

Reliable – to last for the design life of the satellite

Designed and built to meet specific technical

requirements;

Thermal properties

Electrical characteristics

Radiation

Magnitisation

etc. ...........

Cryoconnect Ultra Low Temperature & Feed-Through Solutions

Custom interconnects

Custom alloy wires & weaves

To 44 AWG wire

Vacuum sealed feed-throughs

Major cost reductions from existing technologies

Page 28: Cryoconnect and the space marketplace an idiots guide

Heatsinks Designed to suit all

applications

Careful heat sinking is required where wires are expected to become super conducting, or at ultra low temperatures where boundary resistance effects may make adequate heat sinking more difficult.

Feedthroughs Feedthroughs which

allow the wires to

pass though a

vacuum wall without

mechanical, and

financial costs

associated with

additional

connectors.
