Life cycles of

plants

NJCCCS 5.3.2.B.1 and 5.3.2.B.3 and 5.3.4.D.1

Exhibit A: Pine Cone

Page 3: Ecel517 annabel lee_revised

Pine Cones

• This pine cone contains the seeds to grow pine trees

• This pine cone is 8 inches tall• How tall do you think the pine tree will grow

that comes from this pine cone?• Look at the beautiful pattern!• What other patterns in nature have you seen?

Page 4: Ecel517 annabel lee_revised

Exhibit B: Avocado tree and

avocado pit

This tree grew from a small

round pit

Page 5: Ecel517 annabel lee_revised

Here’s the avocado pit close up…

Can you see the root beginning

to grow?How can we

help that root to sprout?

Page 6: Ecel517 annabel lee_revised

Sprouting and growing seeds• First put the seed into water – use toothpicks to hold

the top of the seed out of the water and let the tiny root use the water for nutrients. Why is half the seed out of the water?

• When the root is sprouting put the seed into soil where the root can spread and gather nutrients

• Don’t forget to water that seed in the soil because the plant needs both soil and water to grow

• Watch the plant grow up toward the light. How long do you think it will take before leaves form on the stem?

Page 7: Ecel517 annabel lee_revised

Leaves, stems, roots, fruit• The stem will grow up

toward the sunlight• The leaves will take in

nutrients from the sun• The roots receive

nutrients from the water and the soil

• If you take care of your plant it will bear fruit

Trilobiteswere extinct

before dinosaurs even came into

existence!

Trilobites

NJCCCS 5.4.4.B.1

Page 9: Ecel517 annabel lee_revised

Trilobites lived under the ocean• Scientists believe that trilobites had hard shells

and many legs so they could walk on the bottom of prehistoric oceans and gather their food

• Scientists have identified gills on trilobites which means they lived underwater

• This trilobite was found on dry land far away from the ocean. What was it like in prehistoric times in the place where this trilobite was found?

Measuring and weighingusing common household tools

Measuring cups• Using a 1/3 cup measuring cup, measure 1/3 cup of

lentils. The lentils must fill the cup.• Now pour those same lentils into a ½ cup measuring

cup• How much space do they now take up?• Use fractions to discover how much of the ½ cup

measuring cup they are filling

Page 12: Ecel517 annabel lee_revised

Using measuring cups for dry ingredients

• Now pour those same lentils into a full cup measuring cup

• Does it still look like the same amount of lentils?• Does it look lie more or less than it did in the 1/3

cup measuring cup. Fill the 1/3 cup measuring cup with more lentils now and compare

Page 13: Ecel517 annabel lee_revised

Liquid measuring cups• Now pour 1/3 cup of lentils into a one cup

liquid measuring cup. How does it look? Does it fill much of the space in the cup?

• Now take a two cup liquid measuring cup? How does it look? Does it look like fewer lentils? A lot fewer? Why?

Page 14: Ecel517 annabel lee_revised

Measuring spoons• On your own try measuring the lentils with the measuring spoons.

How many tablespoons fill a cup?• Weigh the lentils in each container and in each spoon. Do they

weight the same? Why or why not?

Sea Creatures

NJCCCS 5.3.2.C.2

Page 16: Ecel517 annabel lee_revised

Scallops and Corallive in the sea

• Sea water is salty• Many living organisms live

in the sea• Some sea creatures live

inside shells• Some sea creatures live at

the bottom of the ocean and move and grow without shells

Page 17: Ecel517 annabel lee_revised

Sponges and Barnacles•Have you ever seen a barnacle on the side of a boat or on a dock? Did you know that it was alive?

•Did you know that sponges are sea creatures?

Page 18: Ecel517 annabel lee_revised

Clam, Oyster, Scallop

•Have you ever eaten one of these sea creatures?

•We eat these fresh shellfish raw or cooked
