Citation preview
Efficient Control of Bush Honeysuckle, Lonicera mackii.
Biology and Life History
• Range: Endemic to northeastern China, Manchuria, Korea, and Japan.
• Introduced in Europe in 1887, Canada in 1896, and US in 1898 at the New York Botanic Garden
Current Range in North America
Criteria used in determining the priorities in
honeysuckle control
1. Is it a high quality habitat? There are mature trees, diverse native plants or rare species present.
2 Is it accessible for efficient control? More acres can be restored.
3. Is there direct public benefit? Includes overlooks, trails, recreation areas.
4. Is it a seed source? Honeysuckle exposed to sun light on edges or in full sun produce seed.
5. Is the area impacted by E.A.B. or deer?
Invasive plants have more impact here.
Over browsing by deer
Costs of bush honeysuckle control

Production Rate 2+ Acres per hour
Spray 2.5 Qts Round-up Powermax, 17lbs/100 gal AMS, 4oz Direct antidrift
3 gals water/Acre ULV Treatment.
Before control
After control
Open Soil invites invasives
Seed it or weep.
Grassy Matrix of Virginia Wild Rye and River Oats allow For selective control year 1 and 2
Fill the void!!!!!
Maintenance is key, Burn, Mow or Spot
Spray Yearly or as needed.
Prairie planted after honeysuckle was removed.
Add desirable species 3 to 4 years later
