DESCRIPTION
We are living in the age of the social web – it impacts how we communicate, how we connect, how we educate and how we do business. This session will explore trends in social media, marketing and communications using the film oeuvre of one Charlton Heston – and how we can use themes and catchphrases from his films to understand how the web impacts our learning, privacy, and how we are being marketed to. Mike Richwalsky is senior director of creative services at John Carroll University, where he is responsible for the University’s web, print and electronic marketing. A leader in the use of cloud services and architecture in higher education web development, Mike has presented at higher education conferences in the US and UK, including HighEdWeb, EduWeb, Institutional Web Management Workshop, EduComm, J.Boye, Coalition for Networked Information and the Carnegie Mellon University Digital Libraries Colloquium.

In a literature course at California State University—San Marcos, students brought characters from the New York Times bestselling Twilight series to life.
"The popularity of Twilight is very much linked to social media," says course lecturer Natalie Wilson. "So when I taught this course, I wanted to bring that into the classroom and make students aware of how its Internet presence has fueled its massive cultural popularity."
Each student chose a character from the series to personify on Twi]er, demonstra*ng their knowledge of the book's wri*ng style in their tweets. The project was ini*ally received with skep*cism, Wilson notes, but students quickly accepted and engaged in Twi]er. Students worked together to create campaigns, including one to rid the social plaaorm of Bella, one of the main characters in the series.

A man walked into a Target outside Minneapolis and demanded to see the manager.
