Unit 1: The basis of lifeUnit 1: The basis of life
1) The living things carry out three vital functions. Explain them.
Living beings obtain the matter and energy necessary for life.
Living beings relate with their surrounding environment.
New individual living beings are produced.
2) Classify the cells: autotrophic or heterotrophic cells. Explica las diferencias.
• Leaf cells in a tree.Autotrophic cells
• Muscle cells in a person. Heterotrophic cells
• Root cells in a geranium
Autotrophic cells Las células autótrofas son capaces de fabricar su
propia materia orgánica, las heterótrofas no, por lo tanto tienen que coger la materia orgánica del exterior.
3) These are two types of cells:
a) What kinds of cells are they?
Animal cell / Plant cell
b) Explain the three basic structures of a cell.
Nucleus contains the genetic material of the cell.
Cell membrane protects the cell and regulates the substances exchanged.
Cytoplasm contains the nucleus and the organelles.
c) Which organelles and structures are only present in one type of cell?, Which are common to both?
Only plant cells have got a cell wall and chloroplasts.
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, endoplasmatic reticulum, mitochondrion, Golgi body, lysosome, centrosome, ribosome and vacuole are common to both plant and animal cells.
