FIS / IBM Partnership

• Work closely together to leverage IT for clients, 40 years

The Situation:

• Online banking growth = 3X

• Need for full database encryption

• Need for faster storage response times, Existing disk-based storage didn’t support

• Must continue to meet Service Level Agreements, Long-term client needed performance

The Tests: FIS Quickly evaluated/tested several options

• FIS had already made significant improvements in database design & operations

• Optimism: Flash from IBM “A Solution the size of a Pizza Box” – versus multiple racks full of disks

and solid state drives (SSD’s), Encryption support

• 6 months of testing through early 2014

• FIS Sponsor/Contacts: MaryEllen Adam, Wayne Ross

• FIS Innovation early adoption of Flash

FIS and IBM: Profile Case Study Results

Overall Performance Improvements: • Overnight scheduled processing time (the “Day-end” process) was

reduced by 40% on average • Front-end application response times improved by 250

milliseconds, or around 38% • Online Profile database backups accelerated from 6 hours to 1.5

hours, or 75% • With FlashSystem, FIS can continue to achieve optimum

performance with a fully encrypted Profile database

FlashSystem continues to provide microsecond read/write response times, allowing FIS to meet time-critical file deliveries and sustain user interface response times under peak load conditions.

FIS Experience – IST Payments Case Study

The Need: FIS IST Switch software must be incredibly fast and

deployable across multiple devices – Electronic Funds

Transfer, ATM’s, mobile phones, and more

Payments speed and volumes requirements growing with

increased competition

Solution/Test:

• January, 2015 – Tested IBM FlashSystem and IBM DS8800

• FIS Sponsor/Contact: Andy Roe (London)

Results:

• Both IBM Storage devices achieved over 10,000 transactions/sec,

or 3.6X Higher than previously tested

Financial Institutions must now store more data and get more insights more quickly from that data.

However, with data processing capacity radically improved, the bottleneck becomes the ability to

store and retrieve large volumes of data as rapidly as needed.

Mainframe Integration

Schwenk Zement achieved high performance with

24 hours availability by migrating all the SAP

application databases to an IBM System zEnterprise

and two IBM System Storage DS8000

geographically separated to provide high

performance and maximum business continuity for

their most mission critical applications [1].

Cloud Computing

A telecommunications company in Spain, built a

cloud-computing infrastructure using IBM z

Systems mainframes and IBM System Storage

DS8800 devices to support data-storage

requirements. The company established an elastic

platform that enabled them to become a cloud-

services provider and offer infrastructure as a

service solutions to attract new customers [2] .

Databases

A restoration services company in Germany

improved the performance for most mission critical

SAP applications and the underlying DB2

database by up to 50 percent and decreased

backup times from 3.5 hours to two minutes, a 99

percent reduction !. All of this using the IBM

Systems Storage DS8000 [3].

Disaster Recovery

BLOM BANK has been able to minimize RTO and

reduce RPO to around 1 sec at the remote site, enabling

unprecedented continuity of service while being at Tier 7

– the highest level in the multi-site availability

hierarchy by implemented IBM DS8000 storage

solutions as the backbone for its three-site data

center replication strategy.. ,.[5].

DR

Data processing

Fransabank, has seen 40% performance gains for key

processes. The end-of-day process has fallen from

eight hours to less than five, and the end-of month

process from 13 hours to less than eight by using its

new core banking software running on IBM Power

Systems servers and backed by IBM Systems Storage

DS8000

A direct broadcast satellite television provider uses

DS8000 in the primary and Disaster Recovery site, and

High Performance Flash Enclosure, as a result its

response time has been significantly improved: what a

query used to take 10 seconds is now sub-1 second.
