The mission of the Department of Defense (DOD) is to provide the

military forces needed to deter war and protect the security of our

country. To successfully execute the DOD mission, our Military

Departments must have the energy, land, air, and water resources

necessary to train and operate, today and in the future, in a world where

there is increasing competition for resources. Sustainability provides the

framework necessary to ensure the longevity of these resources, by

attending to energy, environmental, safety, and occupational health

considerations. Incorporating sustainability into DoD planning and

decision-making enables us to address current and emerging mission

needs and consider future challenges.

DoD Energy Security

“Energy security for the Department means having assured access to

reliable supplies of energy and the ability to protect and deliver sufficient

energy to meet operational needs. Energy efficiency can serve as a

force multiplier, because it increases the range and endurance of forces

in the field and can reduce the number of combat forces diverted to

protect energy supply lines, which are vulnerable to both asymmetric

and conventional attacks and disruptions.”

— DoD Quadrennial Defense Review, 2010
